Makes me feel old - remember it like yesterday. What a weekend... :)

Great day, stood right behind the goal as the ball went in. Then, on to The Argyle pub off Oxford Circus when a couple of Blades walked in and ordered Champagne. "Celebrating our survival?" I asked. "No, we've just done our 92nd league ground" came the reply. When it was pointed out that we were safe, they typically had worked it out that 2 teams could still catch us for the last relegation place (Derby and Luton or Sunderland if memory serves??). When it was pointed out that said teams had to play each other, it slowly dawned on them that we were indeed, mathematically safe. Cue more champagne and the rest as they say.................

Is a bit of a blur!! :)

Twenty two years eh ? God I was a fairly young man then. I was also behind the goal when Bookah rose to head in. Twenty two years, well I never.

I was also behind that goal and can still see the QPR goalie (Jan Stekstal?) almost getting his fingers to the ball as it arced away from him.

I didn't realise initially that made us safe. I think Derby were down and the other place was really between Luton and Sunderland*. I think that win put us 11 points clear of them both of them with 4 games to play, so it looked like we still needed another couple of points. However, I bumped into an old schoolfriend on Shepherd's Bush station platform and he pointed out to me that as Luton and Sunderland had to play each other, they couldn't both overtake us and we were safe!

I was 24 then with no kids. My two are now just about to turn 18 and 21. Time flies etc.

* That season there was 4 up and 2 down that season as the league, for some reason, decided to extend Division 1 from 20 to 22 teams. Two years later we had the premoier league and 4 years later we had 4 down 2 up as the PL decided to go back to 20 teams. As ever, the FG's favourered Wednesday as they finished 3rd in Division 2 in 90-91, but got automatic promotion.

It was done because the clubs wanted the reciepts from 2 extra home games and they also wanted to increase the league from 92 to 94 teams (22-24-24-24). Maidstone and Aldershot's swift demise settled the latter point.

What about that vibrant kit colour , pale yellow{ ahem } if memory serve's me right . Start of next season was a slow burner as well .
