On this day being 70 years ago United played Leicester City at Bramall Lane & won 7-2 in front of a crowd of 33,489.

As a result we were top of the League & remained there for the rest of the season, our last major success. Let's hope this season we can emulate.

Happy days !

Was it anymore of a success than 2016/17?

I hope this is the start of a ‘70 Years Ago This Month’ thread! Looking back, it annoys me that I missed the promotion season, as my first match was early in the 1953-54 season.

Mostly stood up throwing their hats in the air and waving dangerous rattles about

The stewards moved in in the threatening way that they do when they've been given a uniform for the day, and all hell was let loose.

Tickets were not on sale for the next 6 months because United were doing too well for the authorities liking

I used to tag along with my dad if I new he was going.
He used to sneak out as he liked to go for a drink I caught him a few times.
The matches are a complete blurr as I was only 4/5 at the time.
Be nice to win it again.

I went rummaging in the old programme drawer, as I have some programmes from before my time (presumably odd ones my dad had not thrown away), but the only one I have from 52-53 is v Lincoln, Sept 1952. I include below some of the pages, and I hope some of it rings a bell with you. The crowd was over 33,000, United won 6-1, goals from Hawksworth, Ringstead (2), Brook, Hagan (2). It was another 2 months before they went top, but they were clearly beginning to hit form. It appears that the 52-53 side won promotion by the strength of the attack, which scored goals for fun; the 60-61 side was promoted by virtue of a strong defence - that team was not free-scoring. The 60-61 side were only runners-up, but they did perform better than their predecessors in the top division.

I have a complete set of all United programmes from the season 1952/53 apart from the Everton home game and if anyone wants to sell an original please advise. Also if anyone wants a front page copy of any of the games I will oblige.

Not quite a request matching your offer, but if you have a pic of the programme for the 7-3 win over Wednesday the season before, that would bring a smile to lots of faces; especially if you have the comments on the match from the following programme. Not many of us have seen us score 7 past Wednesday…

I've written about the Unofficial Football Club Championship for The Pinch. That is the "winner stays on" World Championship. The team who beat the team who beat the team.

Right, point being, Sheffield Wednesday were Unofficial World Champions coming into that Derby game in 1951. So, not only only did we beat them. Not only was it 7-3. But, we became (Unofficial) World Football Club Champions that day...

When I was a young fan, I used to think that “Wardonia Blades” was a supporters club branch. I always wondered where Wardonia was (Eastern Europe was my guess), and why we had such a big fan base there.

Are you sure of your facts? I think a group of Wardonia Blades still fly over for Boxing Day home matches🤣 What a great confession - I nearly choked on my breakfast reading that.
My confession in return (I’m sure I have posted before) is that as a 6 year old, I used to see the programme of my first few matches (1953-54), and I thought the photo on the front cover was a photo of the game I was watching, rather than of the previous home game. My brother (4 years older than me) was merciless when he realised what I was thinking. Finding out Father Xmas didn’t exist was easy in comparison.

I always think that 'Wardonia Blades' sounds like a Muse song? Maybe one for the younger members of the old gits club. :)

As requested copy of the programme for the 7-3 win over Wednesday dated 8 September 1951 in front of a crowd of 51,075. Unfortunately I do not have a follow up programme reporting on that match but on the 15 September we played West Ham United at home with a score of 6-1.

Many thanks for that. Interesting that the Editorial talks of the bitterness of the rivalry belonging to the past; we are all good friends nowadays, of course … One thing is clear - there were lots of goals scored at that time. And one criticism - did nobody in your family fill in the scores on the Scoreboard?🤣
If you have the time, please post other items of interest you may have; the old programmes are endlessly fascinating, and give a real sense of the period.

I never knew Joe Shaw played on the left.He was always Centre Half when I saw him.You learn something new every day.:)

He started as a wing-half, which, given his size, was his obvious position. When he moved to centre-half, he was thought by some to be too small. Joe Mercer bought the big Malcolm Barrass to replace him. It didn’t take Joe long to get his place back.

As requested by HodgysBrokenThumb, SpongeBobBlade, SilentBlade, XM657 & others, I have photographed the full programme of one of my main SUFC programmes being SUFC v Leeds United 15/2/1936 which had a record attendance for the club of 68,287. I hope it is appreciated by Blades all over the World !!!

On a side issue as an ex-colleague, ex-team soccer player for well established local teams in Yorkshire, Season Ticket Holders & supporting United all over the country visiting 90/92 of existing grounds, ex-drinking partner etc. over a period of 58 years + with
WoodwardFan, I wonder whether he could be persuaded to end his sabbatical & re-join the S2 group. His posts are missed by many whether agreed or not, but always debatable.

ANY THOUGHTS !!!11.jpg8.jpg9.jpg

Thanks for that peniblade . I like the front cover design, and some of the details are wonderful. So much advertising, including LMS trains advertising a train to go and watch Wednesday at Birmingham, and, best of all, an appeal to the crowd to wave a handkerchief if someone near them needed medical help from St Johns Ambulance! Given the size of the crowd that day, I imagine a fair bit of handkerchief waving went on. It also reminds me that my dad was lucky enough to have been at the Lane that day, but then had to miss the Cup Final because he had just started work and couldn’t get the Saturday morning off. He had a weeks holiday at the beginning of May for the rest of his working life, but of course United never got to another Cup Final in his lifetime…

The old adverts are fascinating. A Sunday coach trip from Sheffield to Keighley for 4/- sounds a bit expensive though even in today's money 🤣
