Current league placing and no of managers since 2009 semi's (inc caretakers
Sheffield United 24th - 4 managers (all this season)
Preston 23rd - 5 managers
Burnley 12th - 6 managers
Reading 5th - 3 managers

3 of those teams have had the benefit of parachute payments.

Of the teams in the top 6 (as it stands) - QPR, Norwich, Cardiff, Swansea, Reading, Leeds.
Only Cardiff and Reading have made the play offs since 09
Only Cardiff have made the P/O's
QPR were nothing more than midtable in this period
Norwich and Leeds were both promoted to Championship last season.

Obvious thing for me is the stability of clubs or clubs getting on a decent run.

Any comments on this.

I think it's a bit disingenuous to include caretakers especially in burleys case as it's effectively doubled the manager quota.

Would lambert or Grayson have been given the stability if they'd been the managers to take their clubs down? Probably not, they've done well partly as they've no baggage to overcome.

Dave Jones has had loads of cash to spend on wages, so it's no surprise they're up there, though given how much he's had, maybe they should be out of sight like QPR?

Stability is all very well and good but I still think we need a clean slate going in to league 1. Do we really want a guy who's got the stench of relegation hanging over him to be the one to get us back up? What sort of players will he be able to attract with his track record for us?

Take your point but if you're saying stability has helped the current top 6, over the last 2 seasons;

QPR - 6 managers, only a takeover and cash injection (plus Sir Neil) revived their fortunes
Norwich - 2 managers, relegation
Cardiff - numerous court battles with the taxman, take over issues, selling of players etc
Swansea - 3 managers
Reading - 3 managers
Leeds - 1 manager, Uncle Ken took them over when they were in a far worse mess than us but it took relegation and a failed play-off attempt before they got out of the 3rd division

Not quite sure what this all means but you're right in that changes at the top, continuous throughput of players doesn't help and that's what we need next season, a settled squad of 20 SUFC players for starters and another reason to continue with MA.

Here's another stat for you.

Since 2005 no team that has been relegated to league 1 has come back up to the championship with the same manager in charge.

I wonder when was the last time that did actually occur? Chris turner for the piggies?

How many of those replaced the manager 5 months before going down though ?

Does it matter? Five months is plenty of time to stamp your own mark, and stave off relegation especially if said manager wasn't in the relegation spots when he took over.

It's good, but it's not the right answer!

Now I'm curious, which one of them doesn't?? Or is it one of those Super Injuction type deals?

Sturrock took the pigs up. Shame really, Turner was doing a grand job.

Right you are. Crikey, how further back was it when a manager got his team relegated to the third tier, and then brought them back up again (Not necessarily straightaway). Can't be Bassett can it?

I thought this, but then I thought, it also shows a level of indecision from the boards of the respective clubs. I never like to see managers, I think its almost always a kneejerk. But more often than not, the Chairman that got the manager in, also sacks him. I also think that when a manager gets sacked and the club appoints a caretaker, then it shows the complete lack of planning from the board... again back to the kneejerk.

I actually didn't really have a point to make when I started this thread, it just clicked that we were playing our 2009 play off semi opponents and looking where we both were I tried to put some info about the 4 sides.

Perhaps the glaringly obvious was the instability and how clubs deal with it.

It doesn't necessarily follow that appointing a caretaker shows a lack of planning. There may be a whole host of reasons for doing so. Was it lack of planning that forced John Carver in as caretaker earlier in the season?
