Blades 1 (Field) Arsenal 1 (George)

I dont remember anything about the game apart from the final minutes of the match. Attacking the Lane End, Terry Nicholl fired a shot that, Arsenal's keeper, Jimmy Rimmer blocked, Nicholl reacted quickly to the rebound and it seemed certain that he would fire in the winning goal but somehow Rimmer got up quickly and made a miraculous save to tip the ball over the bar. Then we had a final chance with a corner kick but Tony Field took too long to take the kick and then the ref blew for time. My dad was furious with Field for delaying the kick. There is no second half footage in the below link. Maybe because there were no goals and that the floodlights werent bright enough for the YTV cameras and "The Big Match" decided on highlights of the first half only?

FA Cup 3rd round

Blades 2 (Dearden, Currie) Bristol City 0

It didnt register to me at the time that the match was the first time I saw us win a FA Cup match. I only realised this a few years ago! The previous time we won a FA Cup match was at Watford 2 years earlier but I wasnt at the match.

I remember both goals well. Watching the match from BLUT, my dad and I had thought TC scored the first goal as it looked like he had fired in a volley from the left wing at the Kop End. Later in the evening, reading the Green Un we found out that it was Dearden had got the final touch via his head. The second goal just before the final whistle was a powerful drive by TC using the outside of his right foot and the ball swerved round Bristol City's keeper Cashley. A well executed goal at the Lane End. The players ran to congratulate TC who raised both arms giving double V signs.

Some interesting items on that FA Cup post.

An opposing player's view on TC. The disappointment at the club about the fan's support both in terms of quantity and quality. I hope Jonny(WCFC) picks up on the Hodgy article referring to the Worcester City FA Cup game.

Blades 1 (Dearden) Manchester City 1 (Booth)

I was back at Mary Hare after the school Xmas holidays but I have no memory of the day. I hadnt realised that YTV had shown highlights of the match in the next day until I had the 1968 to 1981 goals compilation video produced by YTV in 1993. Our goal can be seen from 15 mins 30 secs in below video

As I’ve mentioned before on here , the position of goalkeeper is the one in which the Blades have been most blessed since I first started watching us and we now appear to have another who will become a part of that great tradition .

Of all the previous ones who fit into that category , Jim Brown is probably the one who was most underrated . The match report highlighted by SB shows just how brilliant this lad could be and I still remember a remarkable double save he made in a match against Chelsea as being the most outstanding feat of goalkeeping I have ever seen and not just at the Lane .

Spurs 1 (Duncan) Blades 3 (Currie, Eddy, Woodward)

In the morning at school I approached a Spurs supporting prefect called David Robinson (who later won 4 silver and 2 bronze medals at the 1981, 1985 and 1993 Deaflympics) to try and discuss the match but he was a bit dismissive by saying "Spurs will thrash Sheffield!" . In the TV room later in the afternoon when the final score was revealed in the Grandstand programme he took it well by smiling at the way I cheered. In the next morning he was telling me what he thought of the match from the Match of the Day highlights (I wasnt allowed to stay up at school to watch MOTD until 2 years later). I remember him saying that the first half was evenly matched but we took control late in the game.

Keith Eddy's goal won the MOTD Goal of the month for January 1975

Slide rule pass from Currie to Woodward who finishes it perfectly . Immaculate handling from Jim Brown .

How many times did we see that ?

Glory Days . :)

FA Cup 4th round

Aston Villa 4 (Leonard 2, Nicholl, Graydon) Blades 1 (Field)

During the week leading up to the match I was having a light hearted banter with Robert, a Villa fan 3 years above me at school. Villa had beaten Chester 3-2 in the League Cup semi final 2nd leg (1st leg ended in a 2-2 draw). I told Robert that the Villa team will be too tired facing a first division team three days later and Villa should be resting players to concentrate on getting promotion from the 2nd division also that they will be playing in the League Cup final soon. Robert dismissed this and said he expects Villa will field a full strength team and will have a go in the FA Cup competition.

On the Saturday in the tv room my heart had sunk when I found out that we were losing 2-0 at half time but thought we still had a chance of a fightback in the 2nd half to force a replay but I was wrong again! When the 4-1 score appeared in the Grandstand results service, I put both my hands on my face but could see Robert appearing on my side from the corner of my eye. He looked straight at me as if he was waiting for me to say something! I was speechless before he walked back to his chair.

Went to this one on the old Witton Road open end. Miserable weather, miserable result.

Little did I know that 2 months from this game I would start work at IMI Witton (part of the ICI group) just across the road from the end we were all stood on.

Silent - SPOILER ALERT. In your 1964/65 thread are we about to see another FA Cup 4th round report against Villa?

I was also in pond street waiting for the late pitch inspection at villa. Piss wet through waiting then staff member came out of the sut booking office with a black board saying "Match-On'" a big cheer went up and then they allowed the coaches to roll into Pond St for us to climb on. Piss wet through again on the open away end and a dire performance on the pitch.

I'm somewhere in that shot at Pond St bus station. Absolutely piss wet through. Miserable day all round.
yeah me anall coaches were delayed due to weather conditions and match not certain to be on dire performance from the team that day villa mullered us and yeah was freezing on that open end where 5k blades were

I was a 14 year old paper boy at the time (b4 graduating to milk round) and I always enjoyed reading the sports pages of the newspapers I delivered on a Saturday. I remember us being strongly fancied as dark horses 🐎 (first time I had heard this term ) to win the cup and I was so excited for this game - in those days the FA Cup meant everything.

The let down of that game will always stick with me and was probably the start of the numerous let downs to come ?

Jan 25th was a bad day , until in 1989 my son was born - on Jan 25th
UTBs

Keep these memories coming - very grateful 🙏

My eldest brother went to Villa Park, but my dad and the middle brother of the three of us were at Dinting Railway Museum, I seem to remember. We had a radio with us, thus we tuned into Radio Sheffield for the half-time report. Whoever the reporter was, he said, "Sheffield United could just about claw their way back into this one." I was gutted to return home only to find we had a done a jolly good job of clawing our way out of that one.

My brother said the mood on the coach back was quite lively, considering the result, with everyone chanting variations of "Stop the bus, we need a piss!" The one that has always stuck in my memory is: "If it's running down your leg, clap your hands!"
