I was only 3 at the time and was about to start my schooldays at Maud Maxfield school in September. I think my dad still attended the home games and on a few occasions he took me to watch our reserves matches.

Most of our squad were very young but 37 year old Joe Shaw was still our star player. Average attendances at the Lane were dropping since 1962-63. Our first signing from a different club in 4 years was Gil Reece who we signed from 4th division Newport County.

The club were still planning on having a new stand at the Bramall Lane end.

This was the first season when substitutions were introduced.

Back row left to right: Brian Richardson, Len Badger, David Munks, Reg Matthewson, Barry Hartle.
Middle row: John Short (coach), Len Allchurch, Ken Mallender, Mick Jones, Alan Hodgkinson, Cec Coldwell, Graham Shaw, Joe Shaw, Archie Clarke (scout).
Bottom row: Alan Birchenall, John Docherty, Gil Reece, John Harris (manager), Tony Wagstaff, Alan Woodward, Keith Kettleborough.

Graham Shaw was the first Blade to be named as our sub in a competitive match although he didnt come on. It was the first day for substitutes to be used in the football league although the ruling is that a sub can come on only if one of the players in the team is too injured to carry on playing in the match. Looking at the photo below it looks like substitute Bert Murray of Chelsea stood on the touchline watching the match rather than sitting on the bench? Was it the same for Graham Shaw?

The first ever substitute to come on in a league match was Keith Peacock of Charlton when Charlton's keeper Mick Rose got carried off the pitch after 11 minutes due to an injury at Bolton Wanderers' ground , Burnden Park.

Charlton defender John Hewie took over the keeper's jersey and as it says on the clock twelve minutes past three Keith Peacock's header was his first touch after coming on as sub.
