I can recall going to the Joe Shaw testimonial. Joe was my first real Blades hero and this was my first experience of a testimonial game.

As a younger lady my mum used to go to games and because Jimmy Hagan was playing came with us for this match.

This was the only time she went to a game with us but right into the nineties would always be tuned into Radio Sheffield on match days.

We have talks with Gil Reece of Newport County over a transfer to us. In the next day he scored a goal for Newport in their 2-0 win against York City. Ironically the other scorer was Laurie Sheffield! Not sure when his transfer was confirmed as I couldnt find a paper report about it, it stated in the SUFC Who's who book by Denis Clareborough and Andrew Kirkham that the transfer happened between April 17th and 22nd.

Our first signing from another league club for over 4 years!

The signing of Gil Reece was big news to us young Blades fans.

I think I'm right in saying we continued with our 'producing our own' policy right up to the appointment of Arthur Rowley in 1968 who seemed to go mad with the cheque book.

I recall Bill Punton coming from Norwich and Willie Carlin from Carlisle (September 1967) but I can't remember many other signings pre-Rowley.

It's credit to our scouting (Archie Clark) and coaching staff to remain in the top flight for so long with a policy of producing young talent.ke

Gil Reece gave us 8 good years service. Important goals and a member of that promotion winning team of 1971, Throw in the fact he broke his leg whilst with us. Money well spent.

Colin Addison and Pat Buckley although I think the latter was a strong recommendation by Andy Beattie who was assistant manager for most of the 1967-68 season.

Also Tony Currie!

This was my first full season of watching the Blades and I was slowly getting to learn more and more about the game.

This game against Leeds always stands out in my memory as it was the first time I'd watched Leeds and I was immediately aware that their style of play was something that I had never experienced (in my short time) before.

Cynical and 'dirty' is the only way I can descibe it. It was Revie's blueprint. It led to Brian Clough and revie having that big bust-up on YTV Calendar.

Of course this was the early days - a style of play that is still associated with the club & even today it has led to so many football fans hating Leeds.
