This photo is from the "50 years in division one" souvenir programme published in the 1967-68 season. I had always wondered what year this photo was taken. David Mercer was the first person from this photo to die (in 1950 aged 57), then it was Harold Pantling in 1952 (aged 61) and Seth King in 1958 (aged 61)

Bert's memory recalls that the same brochure has an interview with an elderly fan, he said that the best player he ever saw was Nudger Needham.

Great find, that, thanks.
By modern standards, the players you mention who passed away did so at relatively young ages.

hard to believe all our cup winners are in the ground

mind you its only fair to mention next year 2016 is the 50th anniversary of England winning the world cup
7 of the squad are dead and the rest in their late seventies and eighties

3 of the 1966 squad (Moore, Ball and Connelly) are dead but 7 of the 1970 squad are dead (Moore, Ball, Osgood, Astle, Hughes, Newton and Labone)

Which gives me a chance to ask one of my favourite questions:

Apart from 1966, how many times have England beaten either Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, or Spain in a World Cup knockout game?

We beat Argentina in 2002 so should it have been Uruguay instead of Argentina in your question?

Just re-read your question. You are excluding WC group matches too!

"[T]oo".

Hmmm.

Well the point (which I think is well made - of course :)) is that despite being regularly acclaimed as world-beaters, outside of 1966 (50 years ago), England have never beaten a decent team in a World Cup knockout game.

That brochure also has an interview in it with one of the black and white minstrels.

We have played only 10 knockout games since 1966

Greaves wasn't in the 1970 squad. Instead he drove to Mexico in a Ford Escort.
He's not dead either.
