And the biggest regret is that George Santos didn't end Andy Johnson's career, after what he had done to him the season before.

Santos was an idiot (unerstandably, perhaps, but still an idiot)

Warnock was an absolute and undeniable drongo for not predicting what was bound to happen (when every single other person in the ground knew)

Megson was, and still is, a twat.

Megson: 'Everybody knew what was going on'. Yeah, building a team of giant thugs and attempting to hoof and kick your way out of the division, eh?

Santos!! Santos!! Santos!!

Used to live next door to Megson then, he'd never speak about the battle of bramall lane though. To be fair hed very rarely speak about football at all, he was a right mardy git!

I thank you!

The author responds to your comments to say it was merely an editorial comment which is fine. He then says it is all based on his research of both which, hopefully, was all sound and honest. He then completely ignores the original elbow in the Forest game which is when I start to lose respect. I don't get his final line about what might have happened had they played on. It's irrelevant because they couldn't as the referee rightly called the game off. It's like asking how many Albion would have scored had United not turned up and they had the entire 90 minutes to aim at an empty net.

I was at that match and it is still the most extraordinary I have ever witnessed. Megson proved what a tw@t he is afterwards though by making so many comments in the heat of the moment.

United were an absolute disgrace that day, but i've no problems with our actions in the aftermath.

I can't be bothered arguing with him. If he wants to pretend that he's told the story based on unbiased journalistic research then good luck to him. Maybe he should have asked whether WBA were seeking revenge for the 6-0 shellacking they'd had a couple of seasons before?

Anyone doing in-depth research would have investigated the history between Santos and Johnson as a minimum. You don't have to condone Santos' actions but at least giving the facts: it was a double fracture of the eyesocket, yes; but it came from being elbowed with such force that his nose was forced back into his face and his eye was squashed into its socket.

The use of the fines is there purely to make it sound like we'd thrown the game. As it is, the £10k was, I think, a combined fine for having three players sent off, failing to control the players and failing to fulfil a fixture. Not for cheating: that would have resulted in a £5.5m fine.

The bloke writing that is a tool, and I tell you why. That game was the coming together of a whole load of animosity, old issues and two managers who hate each others guts. I told my son a couple of weeks before that it could properly kick-off in that game, especially if Santos is fit and picked. The Johnson challenge was horrific and worthy of a very lengthy ban and Santos being Santos, revenge was always more than likely. Surely Warnock knew that, so why pick him unless he was looking to stir things? Both sides were looking to 'get' the other and settle old scores and both managers did nothing to quell that, in fact they stoked it.

Rank lazy journalism, tossed off in 15 minutes to fill a few columns!

No, both SUFC and WBA were as much to blame as each other. United lost their discipline, Megson deliberatley provoked United by playing Johnson, knowing full well what had gone on the previous season.

I'm amazed by how many people are willing to slag SUFC off and completely ignore what Megson and WBA contributed that day. McCabe should have had his hot shot lawyers on Megson and sued him into the middle of the next century.

And finally, Santos = greatest tackle ever.

Call me stupid but were not both WBA and United entitled to choose their best teams and if that included Johnson and Santos, so be it? If anyone is to blame for the whols sorry episode, it is those two chaps. Obviously Johnson should not have done Santos and if Santos wanted to get him back he should have sued, not exact summary justice on the pitch.

As for McCabe's hot shot lawyers, I am not sure Megson said anything suable.

Did Megson not make comments about United deliberatley trying to get the game called off? I'm certain I recall one or two incendiary things being thrown about.

As for the comment on picking the teams they desire, I agree, but the comment really was aimed more generally at those in the media at the time I recall absoloutely slating Warnock for playing Santos, whilst conveniently ignoring Megson's role in the whole affair, which I found utterly astonishing.

BTW Darren, United effectivley sacked Santos and Suffo for their actions, which is fine, as anyone on these pages doing the same at their place of employment would also be dismissed. However, this might be a bit left - field, but on that basis, shouldn't Forest have sacked Johnson the year before?

I don't think we did "sack" Santos and Suffo. Their contracts were up at the end of the season and I think we just didn't play them after that game (Suffo was loaned out to a Spanish 2nd Division team). I don't think we stopped paying them. United may have had legal grounds to summarily dismiss them, but probably thought it wasn't worth the hassle given that they were going in 3 months anyway (and we presumably got a loan fee for Suffo).

As for Johnson, I think he said it was all an accident and no doubt it was convenient for Forest to accept that.

I stand corrected then. Still, Megson should have been sued until all he had left were the clothes on his back.

To be perfectly honest (without thinking politically correct and trite thoughts and expressing them through a high and mighty keyboard) I would have probably felt the same way about Johnson that Santos did if that had happened to me. No one knows if he tried to get some justice through "normal" channels. If he did and failed then that would have probably exacerbated his sense of injustice. No one knows if Johnson took the piss after the event and wound Santos up even more. What we do know is that Santos suffered a horrible injury and still held a grudge. I cannot be holier than thou and condemn him for his actions, however misguided anyone might think they were. I really think that is human nature - if not we are all emotionless robots and that simply is not the case.

Or ..... preferably - headbutted so that his butt ugly sneering face didn't offend any watching Blades for a while. Would have also had the secondary effect of shutting his gob !!

What rankled with me was the officiating on the day , how WBA kept 11 players on the park , if it was a battle they had no casualties, but the knee high tackles were started by them , just went unpunished.
The ref called a halt to the game , he could like another ref did tell Warnock to leave one of the injured on the pitch and not call the game off .

The goal tally , if theyd awarded them it 6-0 they had that option , but chose not to as they can award a 3=0 win , and add it to the3 scored

Santos and suffo were effectively sacked, in the sense that they were immediately told they would never play for the club again and put out to whoever would have them.

Andy Johnson is a nasty piece of shit ,'gobby, jumped up , grassing ,prick' I was told by someone who was involved in an unrelated incident with him a couple of years later.

Why are you all so serious about it?

I thought it was a right laugh.
It was cracking entertainment!

One if my vivid memories of the day is a lad running across from the south stand and nicking a west brom flag from their end. If there's one surprise from the day its that there wasnt any crowd bother.

Interesting how the Ginger Minge hasnt changed that much in 10 years. I guess that's the advantage of being born that ugly.

I walked out of the ground laughing as I couldn't believe what I'd just seen. I certainly didn't think that my club had somehow shamed me, which was how some people reacted.

They were a big nasty team and Darren Moore was guilty of some retaliation and tackling that could have been punished. There were other tasty tackles too. My favourite part was Keith Curle committing a catalogue of fouls. Each one worse than the one before. Clearly trying to get sent off but the ref refused to play the game. Some of them made me laugh out loud.

As for crowd trouble I think the customary spilling out on to Bramall Lane that was quite common at that time occurred. I seem to remember walking past the end of it and it all looked a bit of a melee.

Wasn't Johnson involved in a drunken taxi incident with our very own Carl Bradshaw whilst they were at Norwich?
