10,488. Is that our worst home Third round FA Cup Attendance?

Remember it was only Salisbury, we've another home game in two days time, after 2 home games in quick succession, and we are in the middle of a recession (even if not technically).

No. We had 7 thousand odd for Fulham in 1986, which was our lowest home FA Cup crowd of the 20th century. I think the crowd for Cheltenham in 2003 was also sub 10,000.

It'll soon pick up if we draw someone that people want to come and see, sadly.

For me it's not about sadly, it's about life priorities. When your a season ticket holder and go to probably 1/3 away games I think that game can be sacrificed when the wife hates football! I think that will be the same for a lot of people.

ps I wouldn't change the fact that my wife hates football for the world!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a go at everyone who didn't turn up, it's just there will be a fair percentage who'll have wasted much more than a tenner in a fruit machine or something else yesterday instead. Their choice entirely, not saying they are wrong to make it.

It's the "it's only Salisbury" part that annoys me, call me old fashioned, but I go to watch Sheffield United, not whoever we are playing :)

Bit like the two lads sat near me on John Street the other week, who were more interested in the Man U score, formation and lineup on their phones than the Blades on the pitch.

I had to choose just 1 game, so I picked the one where I expected a full strength team hopefully climbing another rung up the promotion ladder. Cup games have to be a luxury these days.

all fa cup ties now get shite crowds

derby got slightly than us less for their tie with palace

west ham sent a reserve team to swillsborough , 7 changes , people dont care now

It's much harder to get people to buy single match tickets these days, whatever the club. Our gates against the likes of Villa and Man City in the cup have been pretty poor in recent years.

-FA Cup just aint what it used to be however some try to dress it up
- It's a season ticket and league culture now
- You can't just pay on the turnstyle - getting a ticket involves a bit of hassle/organisation
- The fact everyone knows it's going to be a low gate in itself puts people off as they know it's not a big attraction and one to easily miss

I actually thought 10,000 was good gate in the circumstances.

I hope United don't get carried away and think fans will flock to see Wolves or Birmingham and charge top prices and we come up with a decent offer.

Wonder how much dropping the ticket price to a tenner actually cost us in lost revenue? It clearly didn't work in getting the numbers through the door.

It's an old point, but I think the only way to revive the FA Cup would be to give the winners (or runners up if the winners qualify otherwise) a Champions League place.

Prize money for winning the fa cup is a meagre 2 million
You get 48 million in parachute payments for getting relegated from the prem

Thats why teams commit hari kari in the cup to guard their league status.

Further making a mockery of the champions league.

A revival is not possible as the gap between the top and bottom is unfathomable. Giving the winners a champions league spot might make the bigger teams take it more seriously, but all that will mean is that we'll see the same usual suspects in the semis and final every year.

My suggestion would be to downgrade the league cup to a football league cup (Dumping the JPT in the process), and removing the Europa league spot for the league cup. I feel this would give the likes of Stoke, villa et al to take the FA Cup more seriously.

But if Man Utd, Chelsea etc took it more seriously, they would field strong teams in the early rounds thus increasing gates for those rounds.

The Champions League is a mockery anyway and I see no real distinction between letting the 4th place PL team or the FA Cup winners in.

I'm with Foxy on this one. The standard of opponent should not matter. We go to watch United, not the opposition. If it is a financial issue, then that's different, but don't not go because its Salilsbury City and not Manchester City.

Exactly how is that going to affect the attendance of a game such as Sheffield Utd v Salisbury?

If you win the FAC you'll have won £4 million over all the rounds from R3 to the final, presumably there's also TV money from the later rounds which would push it up to nearer £5 million - which is an average of £700k per game. The premier league money for a bottom 6 side is about £40m, or an average of just over a million a game. Of course this doesn't take into account gate income for either competition or the significant fact that the FAPL income is guaranteed even if you get tonked every week, nor does it include the parachute payments in future seasons.

Because the competition would seem more important and thus increase the likelihood of fans attending generally. Up until the 60's the FA Cup was generally seen as more important than the league and so clubs would generally get their highest attendances in that competition.

PS: I like the word "generally"

youll get 40 quid a ticket for prem games now , and have to discount fa cup games so get half the income from gates and that on half the gate

and you only get real income from home games in the prem , so its 19 games and its around 56 million now teams get this season ( according to Deloitte) so 3 million a game

I thought 10,000 plus was a decent turn-out for a game against a team three rungs below us, especially taking into account two home games over the Christmas period and Yeovil on the horizon.

If it's Wolves in the next round and the club charge a tenner we might get over 20,000.

Totally disagree. The Champions League is what has ruined the cup. Stop allowing the top 4 to qualify!

I didn't go because i didn't get down in the week for a ticket, and i didn't fancy spending a good half hour queuing up for a match ticket before the match. I would probably have gone if they had pay turnstiles on.

Perhaps my memory is playing tricks but I'm pretty sure that at one time all cup games were included in the price of a season ticket. Perhaps next year we could think about that to sell a few more. Bit of a gamble as it may only be one extra game.

Come on you statto's out there.

We got less than 10,000 against Cheltenham in the 2002-3 season, and at that time we were third in the Championship and were looking forward to a league cup semi final against Liverpool. So over 10,000 against non league opposition in our present position seems better than we might have expected.

If ever there was an inaccurate description of a competition Champions League has to be it! How it can be labelled as that when some countries have 4 sides in it is ridiculous. In my view a thoroughly discredited competition.

"Champions League" is less inaccurate than "League One" for the Third Division!

Don't know if it's less inaccurate, but I agree that league one is a stupid name for the third division!

At least there are some champions in the CL, there are NO first rate teams in League One :-)

the prems not that clever

Evertons gate midweek of 31000 was their lowest for 18 years

people are getting fed up of high ticket prices
