I **almost** posted this very thread yesterday as a warning to the club in case someone was even contemplating it... but I thought they wouldn't be that daft.
If a minutes silence is not held tonight (and I appreciate the difficulties in doing so) then the death of any former PM in the future also should not be marked with one.
and has the death of any former PM ever been marked with a minutes silence, because I don't remember one for McMillan, Home, Wilson, Heath or Callaghan, who have all died since I started going to BDTBL (although both Wilson and Heath died outside of the football season)?
Too many minutes silence for my liking these days, certainly shouldn't be one in this case.
The difference with the USA is that the President is the Head of State there, so a President dying there is the equivalent of the King or Queen dying here.
Do you think any head of state/government should be treated with respect when they die? Hitler? Stalin? Pinochet?, Mao? Pol Pot?
Obviously, Thatcher was not a murderous genocidal dictator, but if you admit that we can make political judgments in not respecting Hitler and Stalin when they die, it seems you are admitting that sometimes one should not respect the office, but consider the person who filled it.

We can applaud a convicted rapist but not the nations greatest leader in peace time.
Do you think the club would be daft enough to try and hold a minute's silence before the match tonight?
The only way they could achieve this would be to announce it as a minute's applause.
I'll show her all the respect she showed when decimating communities of ordinary people all over the land, whilst the non-working, cocaine-snorting nouveau rich speculators feasted at their expense.
I'll show her all the respect that her 'children' - the shameless bankers, stockbrokers and other champagne-swillers continue to demonstrate in her name and others like her.
I'll show her all the respect she showed to the human beings who were killed on the General Belgrano whilst sailing away from conflict.
I'll show her all the respect she showed to those who fell by the wayside, many taking their own lives in despair, in the compassionless 'Greed is Good - Loadsamoney' anti-community culture she so callously cultivated.
No respect from me, Thatcher. Not a jot. I'd suggest a minute's abuse but that would give you more time than you ever gave to ordinary working people and their aspirations.
No. You evil destroyer of lives and livelihoods. You can have five seconds utter silent contempt.

In any event, my view is that minute's silences at football grounds should be resreved for people who gave conspicuous service to the club in question or - at a stretch - football in general. Politicians of any party should never ever get them.

I can't see it, given that Sheffield is the most anti-Tory city in England. Thet haven't had an MP in the city since the last century and no councillors for about 10 years. At the last local elections the Tory Party came 5th after Labour, the Liberals, the Greens and UKIP.
That's Thatcher's legacy for the Tory Party in Sheffield.
But she did shoot the Belgrano up the backside as it was sailing away from disputed waters to teach those "argies" a lesson.
Don't suppose that had anything to do with boosting her all time low popularity ratings at home?
No she didn't HMS Conqueror did. And anyway she was working on advice from the Chief of Staffs and unlike a 'Labour PM' she didn't fabricate evidence to suggest the Argentinians were doing something they were not. Given that HMS Sheffield was the first RN casualty then shame on you.
I saw an interview with captain of the Belgrano once who said the RN was quite right to sink his ship. "We weren't sailing home" he said.
Argentine Rear Admiral Allara, who was in charge of the task force that the Belgrano was part of, said "After that message of 23 April, (confirming that the maritime exclusion zone was not the limit of Britain's Miltary actions) the entire South Atlantic was an operational theatre for both sides. We, as professionals, said it was just too bad that we lost the Belgrano"
As the admiral in charge of the task force said
I just want to quote this so my name can be associated with it and I can warm myself in the glow of its complete and utter win.I'll show her all the respect she showed when decimating communities of ordinary people all over the land, whilst the non-working, cocaine-snorting nouveau rich speculators feasted at their expense.
