Sorry but as Wilder said in his interview that he could just take a punt on a league 2 player .
This is exactly what we should be doing the majority of the best players are from league one
We could have signed Ollie Watkins from Brentford last year for a million and there asking for ten million plus.
Bradley dack , Kemar roofe , callum Wilson , Hugil many more.

Just do some proper scouting it seems wilder just goes for players that he has previous knowledge of like Lundstram , Carruthers.

You think we'd had got Ollie Watkins for a million last year?

Yes he signed for Brentford from Exeter for 1 / 1.5 million , he would have been the perfect signing young up and coming pacey and would have a large resale value .

Ipswich have just done what we should be doing , signed 3 young prospects from lower leagues.

Otis Khan was excellent for Mansfield in the friendly the other day. Ran our midfield ragged!

That kid Nolan from Shrewsbury ran us off the park in a friendly when he played for Chezzie.

He’s got better since apparently.

The whole squad we’ve got has been built on “taking a punt”. And if we don’t want to or can’t compete on wages then we may as well take a few more punts eh?

It was closer to 2million and you actually said "We could have signed Ollie Watkins from Brentford". Clearly not.

There are always gems to unearth in leagues 1, 2 and non league. Considering we have some cash to spend but are hampered by wages, this should really be our main avenue of enquiry.

Nowt doing today though so we go with what we have.

We have taken gambles on lower league players and for the most part they haven't worked.

Fleck really is an exception rather than the norm. 99% of players are playing in league 1/2 because that's their level not because better sides haven't taken a gamble. When you look at the "average" side that played across the promotion season only Jake Wright didn't have Championship experience at some point in his career. You buy league 1 players you end up in league 1 thats what happened before. You take little gambles on lower league players you don't build squads around them. Look at Derby, Marriott is unlikely to start much for them same for McNulty at Reading. Derby and Reading haven't put all their hopes in lower league players they've taken little gambles to supplement the squad. If they work great id they don't Derby have some great options up front and even Reading have Sam Baldock, Aluko and Bodvarson

We could get players who are not even at League One level
A couple of loans from the big clubs and I'm sure we'll be ok

Wilder wanted Watkins last year but couldn't afford him. Mentioned by Knill in an interview last season.

Thought everyone had already agreed we need quality over quality.

Shows how much the board backed him last year then . Especially now when teams who have just come up are bidding 5 million for players
We will never be able to compete and realistically gain promotion to the premier league until we start spending and paying higher wages than at present.
We could have signed Waghorn by paying him higher wages, unless it was ridiculously high, after some players leaving and the Brooks money.
To sign quality strikers,or any players that will improve the team and take us to a higher level you have to pay.

This x100!!

Buying positions like Full Back from lower leagues is a calculated gamble as we've seen.

Key positions like CF, Midfield and CBs find it difficult to step a level as there is such a difference in quality...

Shame we lost out to Colin for Eoyn Doyle's signature for (I think) £2+ from chezvagas. Went on a free to Bradford yesterday.
