“Not in our price range”

I’ve read this a few times when looking at players and I’m still not clear what that price range is.

When we were in League One, the average wage would have been around 2k per week and probably 4k per week at our place with the top earner no doubt on about 8-10k.

With the renegotiation of contracts I’d not be surprised to see the average wage rising to that of the top earners last year.

But with so many teams coming down with parachute money I’m struggling to see the average wage be much off 15-20k in the Championship.

So what is our budget? Does it allow for established Championship players or can we only hope to entice League One and Two players with a sizeable increase?

Then there are fees. Beattie aside, which came straight out of the Jagielka money, and our Premier League spend on Hulse, Davis and Shelton, our biggest spends have been Henderson, straight out of the Hulse money and then you are back to the likes of Ebbrill(sp) and Hutchinson at 1m.

We’ve never spent big on fees. January also isn’t the time to get bargains either. Frees are so limited. The likes of Cotterill’s availability being an exception.

So I don’t see which market we are in. Has the success this year simply outpriced our owners because we budgeted for mid-tanle but find ourselves competing at the top. I think it has and now we face a decision on how not to say to Wilder we can’t match hos ambitions.

Hope we make the right choice.
I’ve not done a count on it how many teams have still got parachute money left, I’m als not sure for how many years you get it, the whole system seems to give them a massive advantage originally it was just designed to pay contracts that were a hangover from the premiership but now it is just funding the failed clubs possible future success. Needs to be sorted.

I'm assuming the reason we gave Leon a stupidly long contract is because we're not paying him huge amounts per week. As we did with his previous contract.

I would be shocked, and worried, if he's on more than £10k pw.

The price range is, or rather supposed to be, the balance - A player out and replaced with an incoming player on similar money. That doesn't seem to be happening though with the flogging of Jags, Walker et al. Next up will be Brooks for sure, where the money from the sale goes is anyone's business

Well, try this. First have a good think where your own income goes. That will set you off on the right track. Then enrol on the ‘understanding business economics’ course at a college near you. All will become clear.

Alternatively you could study Advanced Spending Other People’s Money.
