Now United have some excellent ticket offers and having taken Lenny's advice some years back have seen crowds increase markedly.
But even I would draw the line at offering £5 tickets for all Sheffield University staff for every home game till the end of the season - as our friends across the city have done.
Cheap tickets for students, fair enough, though I'm not sure I'd offer every game but how can they justify giving cheap tickets to staff who're on decent money and more in some cases?
Tis a weird one.

Given that they're educated you'd hope the lecturers would have better sense than to waste any money on £5 tickets.

They have sense?

Although having lectured at both in Sheffield I should keep quiet!

:p

ah well, we have to think of the difficult job they have juggling their work around the endless holidays they have thrust up on them !!! and the sick pay they have to endure,my heart bleeds, dont get me goin on the teaching profession and now reduced ticket prices what next

Wish I had taken education more seriously now !!
Not a bad deal for them is it. Should be offering £5 tickets to those who are out of work and can't afford to get to games.
Cannot agree with this scheme at all.
Time for another letter Len.

It's his reply to this: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/mediacentre/2009/1240.html

Strapon missed the boat, so he's desperately trying to play catch up again. As you say, it's a strange one. Some (not all of course) of the people included in this offer will be in the highest tax band. I can't imagine the people who've been badly affected by the recession (who's non-attendance strapon blames for the clubs demise) will be happy about this.

Apparently Hallam Uni gave Wednesday the knock-back and said they were happy with their existing arrangements which presumably involves us?
Chairman Lee is now suggesting that students at Hallam lobby the uni to get Wednesday's foot in the door.
Looks like the Sheff Uni tie-up is linked in some way to the whole community/education bobbins stuff in turn linked to Wednesday getting £10m or whatever from the taxpayer to spend on the ground.
(Ain't it fun when a football club chairman posts direct onto a fans website, I hope he keeps it up)

He's fighting a losing battle. I don't know about Hallam but the University of Sheffield has been selling discounted United tickets since (at least) the 90s. Even now you can buy discounted match day tickets directly from their box office with a student card. For higher catagory games it's usually £5 off the face value, for lower catagory games they do amazing offers like match ticket, a pie and a pint for £5. The only way strapon can beat deals like that is to start paying students to attend! They even advertise these deals in the foyer of the University in the lead up to the match.

Even if he copies our model he'll never get the numbers (neutrals) which we get from the universities. Most of the accomodation is over on our side of the city, with huge student complexes/villages within walking distance of the ground (The Forge, Anvil, Derwent, etc. Even the main accomodation areas around West St are only a ten minute walk away).

I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. It's just hit me what he's trying to do. He's trying to make deals with the two Sheffield universities rather than introduce a discount student price for NUS members (which is what every other football club does).

The only reason he would do this is so that he can sell more seats in the home end, without offering a similar discount to any away fans who also happen to be a student. Very very naughty.

My understanding of the rules on ticket pricing is that away fans have to be given similar discounts to home fans. Hence if you look at away matches on our site they will usually give you the full price, a disabled price, an OAP price and often a student price. Take, for instance, the Swansea game:

"Tickets are priced £25 Adults, £10 Under 16s, £15 Students with a valid NUS card, and £13 OAPs." - http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/AwayMatches/0,,10418~1460564,00.html

Of course, Swansea aren't interested in giving our fans a discount, they'd ideally like to milk us for every penny they can (as I'm sure we would to away fans). But they are playing by the rules, the prices are the same as they are for similar home seats. See here: http://www.swanseacity.net/page/MatchdayPrices/0,,10354~1648664,00.html

The same goes for the reverse of course, when we have student deals on we have to offer the same price to visiting students/oaps/whatever.

Strapon is trying to bypass those rules by only offering the deal to Sheffield based students sitting in the home end of the stadium. Bad strapon, very very bad strapon.

Of course, he's now made the deal public. If a student at another University were to attempt to purchase a ticket for the next game in the away end and be rufused the same deal he/she could report the club to the football league. If the league ruled that away fans have to receive the same offers as home fans (which I believe they do) then strapon may find a rather large hole in his bank balance from the drop in ticket prices he'd have to offer visiting student supporters for EVERY game for the rest of the season (except us).

So who's a student on here and fancies visiting the sty? :D
