Heavily paraphrased summary from https://www.sufc.co.uk/news/2026/november/02/press-conference/

Rob Staton

How do you reflect on friday night and the win against Wrexham?

- enjoyed watching my team address the slow start v Derby, played good football, should have had a second. They changes shape at half time we got to grips with that after 5-10 mins then comfortable. Watch a lot of teams in this division and it's never one way traffic.

They didn't really have a sniff Wrexham and I notice you have 5 clean sheets now, think only Swansea got more, how much is that a foundation?

- something we reviewed after last season - how many points dropped from winning positions, what we needed to do and to lift. We're a front footed team , don't want us to play on the counter attack , not my way. Have to defend individually well, avoid those mistakes, too many times that happened last year. Defending individually and as a team important and delighted for Michael as well, made some big saves.
Don't think we allowed them to play (as opposed to they made us look good).
So clean sheet really good.

Is Phillips ok, got ankle injury in the game but continued.

- through the help of Kitch who went after him after about 60 mins, think summat said in interview after. He's a tough boy. Bit of swelling but that's calmed down, didn't train yesterday but did some work in the gym, so fingers crossed he's available tuesday.

Rothwell and Bamford?

- Pat got an issue see how he rocks up this morning and a late decision will be made. Joe had little tweak in his groin, precautionary that he pulled out the squad late on. If either misses have players who can come in. Jairo's trained really well, opportunity opens for him if Joe unavailable.
Lot of talk over weekend about Jordan's performance, outstanding for 35, not bothered about his age but about how is is physically, mentally, attitude etc.

Had a couple of requests to ask about Adam Davies, where's he at at the minute?

- slight back issue, had an injection over the weekend. Hopefully be OK for tuesday night.

Seriki comes off the bench, back in the mix, couple of moments on the ball not quite as sharp, is that just him coming back or is it summat he needs to work on?

- dear me, the analysis on players is amazing! He's been out for 8 weeks , been on the pitch a couple of times and and he's not back to his unbelievably free flowing best! He'll get there. No issue with him, the issue you do have is (lack of) reserve team football to get those minutes. Still not ready to start games, maybe after international break.

Preston? Had a difficult season so far how do you see them as a test?

- always competitive, been in this division a long time, had their challenges as well, Graham I know well , did well at Bradford, knows the division inside out as player and manager, he'll be desperate to get a win but we are in a good place as well.

Danny Hall

About the clean sheet record Rob touched on there, as you look back on the summer what's the biggest thing you tried to address?

- couple of things tactically, they call it transition now - counter attack (I need an update on this new book that's coming out just to keep me in the loop). So that, and also mistakes individually, give them the confidence. Think Liam's made a great difference and is one we'll miss on tuesday night. Got a more settled back 4. Michael, physically where he was at, had his operation and a great preseason. Recovery from mistakes when they do occur.

Every club has characteristics, what makes a Sheff Utd player? Liam seems to fit that bill - combative but goes forwards as well.

- yeah personality, positive trains well, known of him a long time. Had success. Could be a PL player now and get odd minutes but he wants to play. Those characteristics go hand in hand with what we're all about.

The fact that Phillips didn't put his hand up and say I should come off here, does that say a lot about his character as well?

- tough boy from centre of Leeds we know tough boys from centre of Sheffield, know what they're like, mentality, upbringing, he's a tough boy. Regardless of what Liam did or didn't say he was staying on the pitch regardless. Ice and elevation, get it strapped up and go again.

What's it like for others (like Sydie,Blaster,Femi) having Kalvin around?

- humble guy, you wouldn't believe the career he's had when you talk to him, just wants to play football. Had to work hard to get these deals put together. He's not a Robbo, not really vocal just goes about his business, offers advice to younger players, he's a leader by example. Not particularly an AM or DM , he's just a midfield player, he gets it, he passes it, gets after people, wins his battles, runs around and he's good on the ball. Could play him higher, get him into building attacks from the back. Great example for young players.

Interviewer 3 (anybody know the fella's name?)

Billy Sharps U-turn , now at Rushden, did that surprise you?

- found out yesterday. Got to say I love Bill but he's not right at the top of my list of priorities at the moment. He's got fingers in pies all over the place, plays golf, he's on Sky, doing podcasts, on EFL show this aft, now signed for Rushden. Is he a baller as well? (interviewer - yes he is)

Get that he's not top of your priority list right now but is he a player that's above the 8th tier?

- I was surprised he retired , thought he might have gone for the record, still keeps fit. Got a connection there.

How important is it that other teams in the division see you as a good footballing side, not just riding out 1-0's?

- we don't just try to ride out 1-0's , teams push you back it's a competitive division. Like Arsenal yesterday, not necessarily going to go gung ho second half and leave themselves open, have to deal with situation.
How other people see us? Not had the luxury of 2,3,4 or 5 windows to build. Building now. Of course would love to be 9 out of 10 and win 4 or 5 nil but that doesn't usually happen in the championship. 100% we want to play well but most importantly we want to win.

Thanks for doing it, it is good to read.

Seems that Staton and Hall have taken on some sort of weird good cop, bad cop routine.

Wilder right to bite at Staton for questioning a rusty Seriki.

Hall giving Wilder a big slobbery kiss with a culture related question about Kitching.

Agreed please keep doing them if you’re happy to.
I don't personally mind doing them, just felt the last one or two did seem to get a lot of people wound up. Maybe something about it being all laid out in writing causes people to pick up on things they wouldn't from just watching it?

At least we know why the squad carries so many injuries now 😂

People argue on every thread at the moment regardless of the content, it will probably carry on whilst there’s such strong pro and anti Wilder sentiments.

still sounds a bit snippy but we really should beat preston there on their knees just now

was wondering about stopping doing these as they sometimes seem to stir things up on here. Didn't seem to be anything in this one that I thought would though so I decided to post it.
Really appreciate the summary and i read them more than i comment. I would vote to keep doing them as they are a nice little read sometimes, even in the bad times!

I can't bring myself to listen to anyone talk that long and your version is at least unbiased compared to what we get from The Star etc. I certainly appreciate you doing them 👍

I did enjoy DH asking a question but answering it himself, I hope that one was verbatim 😂

Its a good summary so thanks .

You do realise you might be creating a bit of a job by doing them as press conference correspondent.

You'll be joining Roy and Deadbat on the staff list .

the Liam Kitching one - think it was more or less.

I always find it interesting that he says he doesn’t want to be a counter attacking team and gets defensive at that.

At our best in the premier league 2019-2020 season we were an outstanding counter attacking team, I’d also say that in numerous games in 2018-2019 we played some great stuff on the counter attack.

If you want to be a team that gets promoted and survive in the premier league you have to be outstanding on the counter attack, there is no way we would go up and dominate possession in the premier league.

Also - Wilder repeatedly says he doesn’t care about possession stats, we are bottom quarter in the league for possession…if he doesn’t value possession then surely a large part of our game is about attacking transitions and counter attacking

Basically what happened with Blaster in the derby match as well wasn't it. Doesn't matter if the player's "tough mentality" makes them want to play on, when they've taken a big knock and look like they might be injured the coaches should be taking that decision out of their hands.

Bert doesn't read half the inane drivel on here, especially shoutbox, but he does read and appreciate your reports.
