Wilder wins games

GeorgeDonis1889 won't listen to you mate he's part of the Wilder cult (not a spelling mistake) who are happy to settle on mediocrity just so they can bang on about how big a blade they are. Every one with a different opinion should just shut up and not bother following United so they themselves can live in peace in their little goldfish bowl without listening to any descent from others. We all know where that leads eventually as you only have to look across town they suffered years of Chansiri until they got of their arses to help force him out. Our owner thinks a staged pod cast will make things ok
GeorgeDonis1889 clearly loves Chris Wilder more than he does Sheffield United probably he has never known the concept of wanting or aiming for the club to be the best it can be. You see his type at every game they arrive 5-10 mins after kick off from the pub, they watch 25mins of the game up again head to the bar for more ale. Go for a piss at HT and thousands are already their necking it and still there after the 2nd half kicks off. They arrive back to watch another 25mins then fuck off 10mins before the end to get back in the boozer. Best of all they pay £500 for the privilege of what has become a habit for them not entertainment.
Ye he's definitely not criticising or sneering is he Willglynning

Bizarre this argument is still going on.

One side who "just want us to play better football" - right up until we stop winning. So then actually it's "just want us to play much better, winning football" - lol, doesn't everybody want that? You haven't stumbled on fire lads, think the difference is a lot of people understand that it's not about to happen and why should we potentially give away our place in this league, and potentially the future of the club, just to stop you whinging?

The other side who worship CW. I am a big fan myself, though I think it's probably fairly apparent he isn't at his tactical peak anymore. But he cares about the club, is steady, and he can build a team. So for now, I don't see why we wouldn't be squarely behind him. He wants whats best for the club and the club needs a steady year. We all groan seeing some of the footie, but I still enjoy the wins too. Be nice if we all did.

It's just exhausting watching people just repeat themselves, on both sides, over and over again. Also exhausting knowing one side are frothing at the mouth for a loss, so they can once again tell us that same opinion they said the day before, and the day before, and the day before. It's boring. Like it would be if we were in the boozer.

I was watching the owner interview the other day, and he said something which was the key for me. That when he got rid of Wilder, he had no idea how deep his influence in the club was. And so they know that to succeed in changing "football culture" they need to improve the structure at the club, to be ready for when the next manager comes in. As just "changing the manager", didn't work (and thats an understatement). So that needs sorting first, seems pretty obvious to me.

You don't go from getting Sheffield United into a position like this to knowing nothing about tactics and being a "dinosaur" in six years. A dodgy VAR call from the premier league once again and a stupid run of circumstances to contend with since. Some of you lot ought to be careful what you wish for

July 2020.

Just the six years ago then.

Is the answer not just keep Wilder but ban him from having influence on transfers

Would you not concede that bad results happen to any manager from time to time? Back in 1990 I recall Leeds losing to Barnsley at home and they dropped a lot of points that season as did United with 85 the points total both had. Leeds spent a fortune that season.

As for the play off. I dont see how Wilder was responsible for Keiffer Moore's awful pass to Watson, or Moore's awful forward play when two v two and Campbell free.

Had Moore played better in those two moments, which were absolutely crucial, we'd have likely gone up in my view.

Then there's the VAR side which was unfortunate and gave Sunderland a huge boost.

We'd have also have likely gone up automatically had Souttar and Arblaster not got season ending injuries. Leeds and Burnley did not lose anyone like that for the season.

But sure, Wilder wins "some" games. That's much better than winning not many games or none which I think many other managers we could have would achieve with this threadbare squad depleted of O'Hare, Hamer and Brookes.

All those words when you could have just agreed that yes, he does win some games just like most other managers do.

need to stop living in the past and focus on the present

And yet that’s what happened. And it took less than six years.

What, exactly, is wrong in wishing for a better manager?
You're wishing for a worse one as that's all our ownership structure can attract

I didnt agree with your post hence more words required because saying Wilder wins some games but messed up at Oxford, Plymouth and Sunderland was a very negative way of assessing that season and as I was pointing out there were factors that went against him that season which Leeds and Burnley didn't have and their budget was bigger than ours.

Oh, ok 🐻

It's a better start than we had last season, so we've at least stolen a march on that one ready for a 6 game winless run later on! Performance-wise, it's hardly been sparkling but we've got something out of all but one games and are sitting in a decent spot all things considered when it comes to transfer windows and incompetent buffoons who sign the cheques.

It's really about whether this is the peak of this team's powers or if there are any other gears to go into and that's the concern.

Wilder needs to settle on who his usual midfield pairing is because that for me is the root of the problems. We have to start, in my mind, with one of Riedewald/Phillips and partner them with Peck in all likelihood. Rothwell doesn't burst forward beyond to threaten the goal and neither does he work hard enough defensively to do the mucky stuff that JR/KP are employed to do. To me, partnering him with Peck stifles Peck to doing more of the dirty work covering for Rothwell's lack of athleticism or willingness to plug gaps and do defensive work.

Everything still boils down to recruitment.

We've gone from signing a load of unknown "AI-slop" and chucking stupid money at them to going back to our sloppy seconds as a short term means for Wilder to at least know what he's getting. Like going to Harvester for dinner rather than the restaurant next door that's new, comes recommended but daren't go and try.

I would then have no issue with signing the odd foreign player if they come with some sort of pedigree and can mesh together with what we've got i.e. a 24/25 year old from Scandinavia/Netherlands/Belgium/Bundesliga 2 with 100 appearances who would be affordable and would have a resale value when Brighton or Brentford come for him.
As you say , it all boils down to recruitment and the gassed-out players that Wilder brings in - on expensive short-term deals - cannot , by definition , progress the club.
Chasing the illusion of a return to the PL is keeping us in the mire with old unfit players when we should be looking for younger prospects.
Mind you , if we did that , we'd have to have a manager who could coach ...🤣

What a feckin state we're in :

Old "spent" players who'll be untradeable.
Abject fitness & coaching.
Slow & ugly football.
And stuck with a manager who's been on the slide since 2020.
And fans who don't want change !

It's like the old story of the king's clothes !

It's always nice when we win games, but the performances so far this season have been a prominent cause for concern. The way we were utterly dominated by Cardiff as a prime example indicates some major issues with our current tactical approach.

We appear wholly unwilling to be the aggressor in games; a philosophy which in modern football is always likely to put you on the back foot. This is most obviously counterbalanced by playing on the counter, but we rarely do that either. We seem to just wait for rare moments where the stars align and we create a moment of quality (e.g Donovan vs Bolton), or we take advantage of a defensive error, like how we won the ball in an advanced position for Peck's goal the other night.

We cannot possibly presume to garner any meaningful success this season whilst playing so passively. Pretty much every other side in the league does not play that way, and many of them (as we saw with Norwich) have enough tactical nous to navigate our defensive set up and score anyway. I'm very worried by what Wolves might produce against us tomorrow if we don't raise our game.

Just playing Devils Advocate here but that’s an example of where most pro/anti Wilder arguments fall down because of the certainties claimed. The counter argument being that Wilder was a make do rather than a positive move.

Nothing is that simple.

By that point he'd already lost his mojo, he's never been the same since the covid break. He can still win games but it's not great to watch a lot of the time, where we used to be enjoyable to watch under him even when we weren't winning.

He's definitely the best person to get results from this squad, but that's partly because no other manager would have assembled such a disjointed collection of players.

He also loses them by treating teams like Wolves like they’re prime Barcelona and asking his players to camp out in our final 3rd waiting for the inevitable to happen.

He played for a 0-0 today and gave Wolves far too much respect, it backfired.
