Any idea of the date for this game at the Lane? We are playing Arsenal.
Lovely weather, plenty on grass on pitch would suggest that the match would be played in August or September. Can See Billy Gillespie in first photo, our keeper in 2nd photo looks like Jack Alderson and the Arsenal player challenging him looks like Jimmy Brain (I have googled to see what he looks like). Looks like Alf Baker of Arsenal next to Billy Gillespie

Think the match is below. We won 4-0 with Gillespie and Johnson getting braces.

Thanks for this Silent Blade. I thought the bald player in the first photo was Billy Gillespie too but wasn't sure the photos were that old. There is handwriting on the reverse that does look old but mentions nothing except Arsenal.

Very happy, think this is the only original photo I have with Billy in match action. Any thoughts on who the United player is closet to the ball in the first photo? It's not Harry is it?

Think it is Harry, but not 100% sure

Silent Blade thanks a lot. Having a match action photo at the Lane with 3 of our greatest ever players in it has made me very happy. Sorting through some old photos, will post more.

Might post them on an Arsenal forum, see what they make of it.

Charlie Buchan the same bloke behind the Football Monthlys?

Buchan was a polymath. Really good player and journalist. And tactician. And soldier.

His signing was the first "big" signing Herbert Chapman made for Arsenal. He was not there when they started winning trophies, but he was in part responsible for designing the tactical system that allowed them to progress (basically moving the centre half from midfield to Defence: Herbie Roberts, who did not play in that game, did the job to great effect).

The Missus was looking over my shoulder and recognised Hodgy.
It seemed slightly odd to me that they would be stood in the street with cups, but as she was best friends with his daughter, she said;

"They drank a lot of tea at the Hodgkinsons, and topped up your cup without asking".

It's another era, when players travelled on buses with fans and drank tea. I guess our current superstars wouldn't get out of bed if it wasn't Krug or Crystal.

This is in The Tribune, a hard copy delivered free today. Taken in the 1989/90 season by Bill Stephenson it would be good to know where this is and if this Blade still attends games. My own (limited) BBC contacts don’t recognise him.

Is he the guy with the ''cut here if I betray SUFC ------'' on the back of his neck? If so he stood in the same place as me and dad on the kop in the 80's. As a naive north yorkshire country boy he made quite the impression.
