It's not a lazy tactic at all. It's a calculated ploy intended to divert from the question of whether Wilder is fit for purpose in the role, making it into a question of Wilder vs (insert name here), from which they can attack the suggestion. For example:
(insert name of foreign coach) - but did you not see Jokanovic or Selles waaaaaaaah, it's certain to fail
(insert name of prominent ex player) - Lampard/Carrick/Rooney are not actually good coaches and only got the job on name value, it's certain to fail
(insert name of experienced option) - dinosaur football, it's certain to fail
(insert name of up and coming talent) - no Championship experience, it's certain to fail
(insert name of anyone without a prior link to SUFC) - he doesn't "get the club", it's certain to fail
I'm sure you can come up with your own similar counter arguments people would use for any of the 8 billion people on the planet that aren't Wilder
