We did well against the giants of wigan.burton gillingham walsall barnsley and scunthorpe
12 points from 12 games against the top 6 sides - relegation form.

25 points from 21 games against sides in the top half of the table. Just above relegation form.

Pathetic.

I fancy all these teams to be better than us:

MK Dons
Charlton
Bolton
Millwall/Barnsley
Bradford
Oxford
Coventry

Then typically there'll be another two.

What chance has a small player like Sheff Utd realistically got up against that lot? At least we'll be a bit more grateful for 10th place next season.

In 1979 at Cambridge when we were relegated to tier 3 for the first time in our history our fans were throwing lumps of concrete at Haslam, that's what we should be doing now to the board and current management. They all want drumming out of the Lane. Six seasons in this division is disgraceful, if McCabe had owt about him he would resign now and let someone with drive and ambition for the club take over. Adkins is simply not a good fit for SUFC, he should resign too, but won't so should be sacked.

Northampton will be up there too.

Charlton and MKD should have the top two sewn up by March. Everyone else will be playing for the play offs, Will we be good enough to be amongst them? Dunno.

Hope Millwall win the play offs and be out of the way.

Yes, six seasons in this division is disgraceful. I was at the Cambridge match too but not at the away end and I disagreed with the throwing of concrete lumps at Haslam as it is too counterproductive and we didnt come back to the second division for another 5 years. Brealey decided to join us in 1980 because as guest of a friend who was a Grimsby director he was amazed at the singing and the support of the Blades fans when we were losing 4-0 at Grimsby. None of the Blades fans knew who Reg Brealey was that day but it was their actions that made a rich man interested in us. If there is a rich man at the Lane next Sunday I doubt he would be interested in us if the fans behaved like they did at the Abbey stadium in May 1979

heh . i was at that game .. i think it was Alex Sabella's last . we sang you'll never walk alone from about the 5th minute to about ten minutes from the end right through half time. The local plod told us they'd never seen anything like it. Funniest bit was someone had unfortunately parked a disabled vehicle right outside the only turnstile.. so everyone queued over the top of it :D

But we've been unlucky :-/

No one can buy the club though. We owe so much money to McCabe that it's simply unviable, certainly in division 3. I guess your first £200 million would be needed to pay him off and settle the debts. He doesn't want to sell either. The money is all in loans and at a hefty premium interest rate. It's a great cash cow for him secured against valuable inner city property. We are stuck with him I'm afraid. And remember, powere corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. I'm not suggesting he is financially corrupt, but is obsessed with power and control, his decision is always right, even when he's wrong!

He will keep hold till 'his luck' changes or he dies. I do not think he gives a toss about the fans. He believes he saved the club and because of that, that gives him the right. The only thing that gives him the right is the fact that he owns it through having loads of money.

Even when he dies presumably his sons will inherit.

Charlton, Bolton, Oxford and Coventry will be no where near next season. Barnsley will do a ' Chesterfield' if they don't go up.
Portsmouth may be one to worry about and Peterborough ' s chairman will chuck more money at them so they might be a challenge.

As for us ? Anyone's guess but it must start with getting rid of all the out of contract players( apart from Long) and nit re-sign any of the loans. Adkins? On reflection I think he should leave but my concern with that is who McCabe would get in ( Warnock? Powell?Cotterill ?Wilder ?) Whoever it is would be working on a limited budget

Portsmouth could be better suited to L1 than L2 but I don't think they'll even get promoted, which will be a failure similar to our own. Bristol Rovers are the most likely and will have real momentum if they come up, they could be a threat if they keep Matty Taylor (27 goals).

Charlton should have enough quality to challenge as they won't be able to get rid of them all. Bolton could go either way but I think they'll appoint a decent manager with Dean Holdsworth having a say and they'll probably even have a bigger budget than most. Unlike Charlton though at least half their squad is out of contract so they'll have more rebuilding to do.

Oxford have money, momentum and some decent L1 players.

You might be right about Coventry, not convinced about them, but no way will Barnsley do a Chesterfield. They've got a squad that they'll keep together, the managerial appointment will be key.

I expect the odds to be something like this...

MK Dons - 7/1
Charlton - 8/1
Sheffield United - 9/1
Bradford - 10/1
Barnsley - 10/1
Bolton - 12/1
Coventry - 14/1
Peterborough - 14/1
Oxford - 16/1

Might be the time for me to finally absolutely pile into laying us for the title/promotion. Easy money every season.

Im sorry but how on earth is a loss making football club a cash cow. Im no McCabe fan but there is no way in our current option that McCabe is becoming better off by owning Sheffield United. You say there are these loans to the football club from McCabe but its then McCabe how puts his own cash into the club to keep it running so he puts money into the club to pay the interest on loans which his company have made to the club?. Yes the ground and other assets may listed under various PLC but McCabe is in no way assist stripping. I still believe he's a passionate fan but he's just not willing to risk his other business ventures plowing loads of money into Sheffield United. The land were talking about isn't Chelsea or Kensington its S2 in Sheffield covered in student housing its really not a gold mine. It is in everyone's interests to get promoted McCabe included.

Uptheclough, let's agree to disagree here. It's depressing enough at the end of such a dire season without examining in detail the taxation benefits( or not) to the owners family. Have a good bank holiday and hopefully next season will be better.

All the Bolton fans I know are seriously worried they might start the season after next in L2.
"All the Bolton fans I know"

Do you live in Bolton because I doubt many on here know one Bolton fan. Not having a dig, just interested.

Give your head a wobble ,maccabe wrote off about 35m of debts and loans ,a new company was formed ,any monies put in since the then has been investment .

I was one of those at Grimsby.
End of a really shit season.
25 mins non stop round of "Sheffield United"
Think "no neck" played for them and bossed it.
Almost got McPhail's shirt when the players chucked them into the crowd. It was the cantors single stripe one - so no big shakes. As it was ripped from my fingers I managed to grab the badge and still have it today - in a frame. Well Ken Jnr has it, somewhere.

We were fucking shit that season.

I didn't throw concrete, though.
Didn't go to Cambridge.

The repeat of "Sheffield United" by alternative sections of the crowd - loud and solid for 25 mins in second half.

was it .. i think you're right on reflection.. sorry my brain is going. i know i sang it through half time though ;)
did you miss the train after the game :D
who was that Grimsby keeper who always had a blinder against us. the bloke with the beard (years before beards)

Coach.

I seem to recall we did sing something like you'll never walk alone but it's not our anthem so I recall the long, long rendition of "Shefield United"

Beardy.
Yes - he allus used to play well against us.
Can picture him but can't name him.
