The Clough Factor

Warnock had a similar wobble when we were 2nd in the Championship. Remember Leeds could have overtaken us at one point. Being up there is very different to chasing down. Going to be an interesting run in for someone. Just a shame we aren't anything other then envious onlookers eh?

I think we should just ignore the previous 39 games because we have played well in the last two.

I think we should ignore the progress we are currently making because the mess we were in beforehand is obviously far more indicative of where we currently are.

Yep, it's incredibly frustrating, and unnecessary. We should have easily been in a position to catch Burton. And with Clough there, that would've been fantastic. Shame this club doesn't do things like that.

Wouldn't it be funny if the only other apparent manager in the running to manage us at the start of the season is the one that finishes above both Clough and Adkins. It could only happen at BDTBL. :)

It's odd isn't it. In Parkinson you have another manager that's not had much to spend ever in his time in management, and he's managed to push on a fairly average Bradford team. Yet when he was suggested for us last summer the vast majority on here were outraged. I think they're too far behind Burton, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them win the playoffs.

Fortunately Leeds' manager was one of the biggest bottlers known to football.

I do not understand peoples obsession with Clough. I thank the man for saving us from the aftermath of Weirs reign. The cup games, Charlton, Tottenham, Southampton and the Wembley trip were superb, memorable moments, which were due in the main to his management skills. It was totally stupid to sack him, after allowing him to sign his own players. A few tweaks to the squad and we would have been challenging for the automatic places this season. Clough is an honourable man who did his best for the club.He did a reasonable job and so does not deserve the abuse he gets. We should move on and I wish him well and hope Burton are promoted.

This season however, we have been managed by a clueless replacement. Suddenly everthings all rosy, because of two good home performances. Things didn't look so great three matches ago, during the shambles at Southend. We finish fifth under Clough and people are calling for him to be sacked. Adkins is a disaster who has managed to turn us into a mid table team, but apparently he should be given another season. Five out of his six signings have been terrible, but people believe he's suddenly going to sign players for next season that are going to challenge for promotion, while being restricted to a smaller budget. Its not going to happen. He talks about the pathway for the youth all the time, but then drops McGahey and plays two loan centre backs and the hopeless McEverley instead. Only one academy player in the starting eleven against Gillingham, its a million miles off the fifty percent he talks about.

At the start of the season we were told that we were going for the automatic places this season. The seasons been a disaster, so apparently his remit after all was to get us to the next level, within his three year contract period. Sounds like the excuses for failiue next season are already been put in place, in that its now a three year project, so we shouldn't moan if were not challeging next season. Dont remember that ever been said when he was appointed. Its spin and more spin, its all Adkins is good at.

Adkins has to have an interview every week to in general waffle shite to appease some fans, do the board come on to explain their actions weekly? No, they don't so i think it's wrong to be criticising Adkins for all things SUFC.

Cloughs a joke, a charlatan with a big name. The second biggest factor in our current situation after the board.
He's Bryan Robson with a smaller drinks cabinet basically.

Soon he'll be exposed for the being the clueless twat that he is and he'll be nothing more than a bad memory for the fans of all his former clubs.

I'm being pedantic here but there were 2 academy players in the starting 11 :)

I agree though I thought it was harsh to drop McGahey but Baptiste, Edgar and McEverley had fantastic games in my opinion.

Very much agree with you there. The agendas some persist in, with such vitriol, just play into the board's hands with their "it was all Clough's fault" agenda. Time to move on, surely? And far better wishing him well than welcoming bad karma onto us in revelling in the prospect of a potential slip-up.

It's the here & now that matters. And whether Adkins is doing enough in the here & now. Yesterday was greatly encouraging, but there's still all sorts of concerns about how he's gone about things (& how he might go about things prior to next season) IMO.

Even so, more performances like Saturday's from here on in until the end of the season (especially in away games) won't do him any harm at all.

I read as far as this Karp and gave up.

When will it finally dawn on the history revisionists, how far we were from actually were from autos under clough.
It was in fact 21 points FFS. That's virtually a half a point a game over the whole season.
We had a team of fecking midgets, who couldn't defend set pieces and a midfield with a strike rate of just 2 goals each a season.
We had a ton of players not getting a game and some wanted to give Clough even more money to carry on his shittiest recruitment policy in the history of the club. One player worth more than what he paid for then out of 30 plus signings.
We only made the plays offs with 71 points, a ridiculously low figure and only possible because each side were beating each other. 71 points wont get you anything like a play off spot this season and rarely does!
Take 21 points off our 71 and Clough got us relegated, that is the true scale of his abject failure.

This ''few tweaks'' is one of the biggest 'myths' that constantly gets pedalled out on here.
I translate myths as a 'load of utter bollocks' sometimes :)

Given that we're not going to even reach the play-offs this time, & that we'll end up with round about 67 points, what do you think Positive Nige will need to do to have us challenging for top 2 next season? Is he capable of bridging the even bigger gap?

You don't strike me as someone who spouts rubbish so I'll assume your not on the wind up here. I can accept someone saying Clough didn't fulfil the promise in his second season and ultimately he failed. These are points we can and do argue on and both are valid. What I cannot accept is the utter disregard of the first season where he in effect saved us from the abyss of a relegation scrap and got us to a cup semi final.

Also he is the only manager in the past 6 years under who we have gone forward. This isn't disputable. He found us near the bottom of the table and left us in the top 6. These are facts. This actually happened.

If we had moved forward this season then I would suggest he did operate under false pretences but the fact we have gone so far backward under a supposed superior manager says Clough wasn't bad. He had his flaws but to suggest what you say is so far wide of the mark it's staggering.

We've gone backwards thanks to his legacy. A multitude of sub-standard players making up a bloated squad and draining the clubs resources.
Adkins walked into an absolute train-wreck of a club and yet bizarrely gets blamed for a mess he played no part in, and worse still, gets blamed for not turning it miraculously around in the space of a season.
Clough won't be in league management in 5 years time, failure to get a Burton side up who were already perfectly equipped for promotion will likely finish him off even sooner.

Adkins took far too long dispensing with the chaff and hasnt brought in any fresh wheat
no one said we had superstars , , just some good ones that needed some help , which he never got in
as Baptiste gets fitter it show how just a little influx could have got us there
an opportunity totally missed

Yes if only Adkins hadn't just refused to buy players for no reason

Well and truly set in at Burton now, fell out with the star centre half Cansdell Sherriff and they are now only 6 points ahead of Bradford who are on fire, and in my opinion will catch them. That would be enough to make sure he never gets a job in football again if he manages it.

Forever cutting his nose off to spite his face the arrogant prick.

Adkins has just now started to get the Clough factor out the Lane but there's still a long summer to go yet. I hope we stick with him as the last 4 home games have been extremely enjoyable and they've actually played with all the passion you'd expect. Fortress Bramall Lane might just be on its way back, just hang on in there.

It's not been easy and at times I've questioned whether Adkins is the right man but after what Clough has done to Burton I'm almost certain that it's not mainly down to Adkins, he's still clearing up the carnage Clough left behind.

Please Kev, for once in your life back a manager. He's just starting to get it right and the past 2 games at BL are the first time I've left the lane with a smile since Southampton at home.

UTB

Burton have not been in great form for a while and their erratic form does to show what effect Clough can have on a team. He walked into a team on the up and is just having to finish JFH's work off but yet is still making hard work of it.

Might be worth finding out the odds for Burton Albion NOT to get promotion.
Here's the run-in...

Apr 16 Barnsley H

Apr 19 Wigan Athletic H

Apr 23 Colchester United A

Apr 30 Gillingham H

May 8 Doncaster Rovers A

every opponent is in the mix, promotion/play offs/relegation.

"It looks from the outside he would rather stay down and build a team he can call his own rather than go up with players that are established and loved by the fans but not his own signings . I hope I’m wrong. But when he arrived he had one of the best defenders in league 1, one of the best young midfielders in league 1 but because he didn’t signed them he won’t play them, strange, and to say in an interview he doesn’t care what his players feel, well that makes him look like a right idiot, come on Nigel your not your Dad, that’s what he would have said, be your own person its 2016 not the 70s. Play your best team, then, as you said Sinfin get rid of the guys that you don’t want in the summer. I think if we don’t do it this season because we haven’t played our best team that will hurt a lot of fans, if on the other hand we don’t make it but have given it our best shot then so be it."

I thought you had written that then I realised it was quote from a Burton fan.

Clough was negligent in failing to bring in decent centre half replacements for Maguire. For that alone, he deserved the sack.

It's also worth pointing out that we finished about 30 points behind Bristol City. A Bristol City side who ultimately had no advantage over us going into the season. They finished below us the previous season. They didn't have as much to build on as we did. After what we spent in January, they probably didn't even spend as much as us.

It genuinely seemed like Clough chose to make us a bit shit, just not quite shit enough to get him the sack. A nice comfortable job for him was more important than bringing success to this football club. And now it seems it's that way at Burton too - even when they've got promotion on a plate!

He's a poor manager with all his father's arrogance but not even a tiny fraction of his ability. His mindset and approach to the job are unacceptable. He does what's best for him and expects nobody to question him. Hopefully the football world will have worked him out before too long.

Also, those 3 points Burton took off us due to that absolute no show at Bramall Lane will probably get them up. That makes me feel sick. If they were 4 points ahead of Bradford I'm almost certain they'd fuck it up. But 6 points is probably just too many.
