I would genuinely be concerned if we retained any of the players out of contract at the end of the season... complete dog shit the lot of them

think he's OK though nowt special as you say. Good point about the internationals that seemed to stuff us a quite bit in October.Wouldn't go for Edgar as he's always off on international duty and that affects the continuity of the team. And he's pretty ordinary. We can do better!
The horror, the horror.Men willing do horrific things... This is league 1.

Of those not contracted for next season:
Hammond
Flynn
Sammon
J Wallace
McEveley
Howard
Harris
Freeman
Cuvelier
To quote Colonel Kurtz, we need fewer men and better.
Flynn's improvement now there's no pressure on him (an improvement not seen in away games, I might add) was predicted by a number of posters. Equally predictable is his return to sub mediocrity if we are dumb enough to give him a new deal.
I think Freeman's got another year
No it isn't, believe it or not. Do you suggest we get rid and give ourselves yet another signing to make? Like it or not, you need squad players, and McEveley's a decent enough squad player. You won't find a more suitable player for the LCB slot either if we're to carry on with 3-5-2.
Yep. We'll surely be looking to move him and McNulty on though this summer as part of the reshaping.
I would only keep 5 or 6 in an ideal world but realistically speaking we need to hold on to about 14 players. I would keep....
Long
Freeman
Brayford
Kelly
Basham
McGahey
K Wallace
Done
Reed
Whiteman
Cuvelier
Calvert-Lewin
Sharp
Adams
Release the rest or do what we can to move on those still under contract. I would then try to sign (ideal scenario).....
Alex Baptiste (starter)
David Edgar (squad)
*Insert a leader/centre back here (starter)
*Insert lively left sided player here (starter)
Jack Payne (starter)
Lucas Akins (starter)
*Insert a link up/target man here (squad)
In summary 5 good first team signings and a couple for the 18 would be enough to improve us I think. We have a decent academy that is drip feeding players to the senior squad that can support it.

Me too. Not been "demonstrably" here.I think demonstrably is a strange choice of word.
If Adkins beleaves Hammond should be the fulcrum of our midfield next season SBSP so be it he definitely plays better in a teamHammond.
He was better yesterday. But if he is our starting CM next season we may as well right it off now.
What has Cuvelier and Freeman done to suggest they should remain? Seriously. One lad cant get near the Pompey side; the other has played about 10 games in 3 season and might have had 1 so-so game for the club in 3 seasons. What an earth has he done to deserve a new contract? Think we can do much better than Egdar too. He has played a lot this season and we have let a lot of goals in. We need some dominance in there.
By your reckoning we will have a very similiar side to this season which has not done it.
We are going to finish some 20 odd points off promotion and you are advocating keeping a whole lot more than most would from a team that has been miles off good enough. Why do we need to hold onto 14 players? I would rather us retain the 7 or 8 and bring in 10 new ones. Its a lot of work but they have had all season to identify signings and have known for some time what league we were going to be in.
Reed and K Wallace need to be put on loan for me.
I simply understand this attitude of we cant have wholesale changes or we cant change too many players. On the contrary we cannot afford not to change so much when we have an ideal chance.
You're baffled by the suggestion McEveley should be kept yet would keep Freeman and sign Edgar? One who can't get in a League Two team and the other who's been less reliable than McEveley and will miss games due to international duty. K Wallace and McGahey haven't done anything to be kept ahead of McEveley either.
We've got a lot of signings to make. We can't be signing squad players. Every signing has to count. We have enough in place already (as long as certain contracts are renewed) to make up the rest of the squad.
Firstly if you think McEveley is worth keeping over Edgar and Freeman you might need to see a shrink.
Secondly you will never make every signing count. If you think we can go out and make wholesale changes where all the signings (what 10? 12?) will make an impact the. As I've said in another post, I would advise adjusting expectations.
Edgar and Freeman would be fine as fringe players. Could do a job here and there in an emergency provided the strongest eleven is improved overall. I can think of at least 5 players that have been worse than those two, far worse.
Numerous teams have come down to BDTBL and shown us what is needed to compete and succeed at this level.
We can go most of next season with Billy and Che up front, even though Che has lots to learn, but we HAVE to have a midfield that gives them quality to work with.
Our midfield worked very hard yesterday - very little bloody QUALITY.
UTB
Depends, does he prefer r n b or jazz? or is he a rock n roll man?Five weeks ago I would have agreed with you over Edgar, but he has been excellent in the three centre back role. If that's the formation we are going to go with I would have no problem in him singing on a free.
Edgar and Freeman would be fine as fringe players, but McEveley wouldn't. Yet it's me who needs to 'see a shrink'. I take it everyone with a different opinion to your own is also advised to seek help. Deary me.
Why do you think Freeman's been sent out on loan to League Two? And if you've seen many games at all this year you'd know McEveley has been one of our most consistent performers, and certainly no more culpable than Edgar for goals we've conceded.
By make every signing count I mean we should aim to ensure they're all players who'll go into the starting 11 and improve us. We have enough squad players in place. Then if we need more, we can add more. But I don't want to see us make any Woolford type signings early on in the window. I remember when Clough did that with JCR, and I knew that we'd get it wrong.
There are enough people on here alone that can see McEveley hasn't been anywhere near the required for most of this season.
If you have trouble seeing something as blatantly obvious as that there little point in is debating anything else. I welcome alternative opinions, I'm a very open minded person but suggesting McEveley has been a consistent performer this season is like saying Messi is out of form.
I've not said McEveley's been a consistent performer all season. Suggesting Edgar has been more consistent would be like saying Messi isn't very good at football. Edgar is also less versatile. Yet you'd keep him as a squad player but not McEveley? Hmmm...
You said McEveley has been one of our most consistent performers. That was the comment I was referring to. I accept you didn't say all season but the context is more relevant than the wording.
We differ on whether McEveley offers anything to the team/squad. Whether Edgar and Freeman offer more or not is another debate. We will clearly agree on neither hence discussion over.
The fact that we are talking about keeping any of them makes me want to cry.
