I was there, we were only a point behind WBA at the and two behind Birmingham. Basset came in January btw.

At the end of the day you've claimed Basset improved us from day one and that he was appointed to get us back up when he was already here and as "proof" claim we were all but relegated two months into the season.

The last match before Bassett was appointed was on 16th Jan 88 when we won 2-1 at Bournemouth. That left us 5 points above the play off place (that season the 3rd bottom went into a a promotion/relegation play off).

In the short term, at least, Bassett actually made things worst. I distinctly recall me and many others thinking he tried to change too much too soon.
