Ah. The flaw in the plan!

There's no plan, it's conjecture and a potential outcome as the title says - " Everything might turn out for the best". Who knows? But sometimes one step backwards can lead to a few big steps forward.

Have you anything positive to say Sean? Go on, brighten our day, blow away a cloud or two !!:)

That's a recipe for relegation then.

Lighten up Blanche.

No idea. That's the point. When Bassett came in he was awful and got us relegated. No one expected back to back promotions. We try to apply logic but football is often quite illogical.
I do believe Basset could have kept us up that first season .
I wouldnt accuse him of taking us down deliberate and we did have a poor squad but it looked that way.
He obviously had a plan and he was a manager who brought in the right players to progress us.
The rest is history and i certainly enjoyed the ride

Bassett took us down deliberately? Gi' o'er.

Bassett joined us in January 1988. By the summer he had signed both Deane and Agana and the rest is history.

We need something at that sort of reading on the Richter Scale to shake this club out of this downward spiral.

Deane and Agana cost nowt and became legends. We need three or four inspirational signings and a good few good signings. Over to you Turnbull, show us what you're made of.

Deane & Agana, part of a team that defined the phrase "greater than the sum of it's parts".

Just how good would it be to feel like THAT again?

Bassett brought in Deane and Agana.
Adkins brought in Woolford and Hammond......

Bassett bought Wally Downes and about twenty other players during his tenure that were subject to complaints from the boo boys.

Both Warnock and Bassett made numerous mistakes, tactical errors, poor signings but now they appear to be infallible.

I agree with you both of those did make some poor signings.
Doesn't detract from Adkins first signings for us as I've seen nothing of promise from them so far (Sharp aside).

I really do hope i am proven wrong and that these are just his "poor signings" that we can laugh at in 5/10 years time etc and he makes some cracking ones in the summer.....

Time will tell I suppose

Yeah, hope I'm not on here this time next year saying 'ok, Adkins is shit...'

Every manager makes mistakes. Fact. It's those that make the fewest mistakes that we all remember. New thread required. :-D

The difference between the Bassett / Warnock eras is that out of all the seasons these guys were in charge only one was spent in the third tier.

Today we can fully expect to be plying our trade in the third league for the sixth consecutive season or Adkins second season.

Really not good enough. But don't let's get too ambitious.

Tell me it's a dream and we don't become a feeder club for our illustrious neighbours .

Go on, then. Tell me which of our players would get within a million miles of any Championship team, including Wendy.

There's no plan, it's conjecture and a potential outcome as the title says - " Everything might turn out for the best". Who knows? But sometimes one step backwards can lead to a few big steps forward.
There doesn't seem to be any semblance of a plan. Not now. Not for a number of years. And yet the nature of football means that most things are possible and nothing is guaranteed.

But what is guaranteed to produce failure is the continuing sales - without adequate replacement - of our best players, and that's why our dramatic decline has happened. Not Ched. Not Tevez. But Maguire, McDonald, Murphy, Blackman etc. etc.

It's up to McCabe to now prove he's learned from the mistakes of the past. I consider the 10% reduction in ticket prices for next season as pathetic and misjudged. It's a saving of around £2 a game. Not worth considering. They may as well give everybody a free programme, big deal. What will reward our magnificent crowd for their loyalty is keeping the likes of Sharp and Adams. Losing Long I could live with. He's a slightly-above-average goalie and not irreplaceable. Brayford? I expect him to go as his wages are not providing a ROI considering his on-going injury problems.

But if he sanctions the sale of Player of the Season Sharp - without whose goals we'd have been relegated - would send out a clear message that he thinks banking the cash now makes up for the continuing decline that follows. He won't have learned.

But I would have and I doubt that I could continue watching this culture of mediocrity.
