To get us promoted out of this division?

6 years and counting, multiple managerial failures, best players sold, when will we get it right?

The board don't seem to be going anywhere and they keep hiring the wrong man. I cant believe how
poorly Adkins has done, he seemed like finally the right appointment, a manager with a proven track record.

How wrong can we have got it?

As Bergen Blade has said, we need a culture change. We need to clear the deck at the end of the season, bring in the right players and build on a foundation of modern, attacking football. If we do that and see progress, I'm happy to wait another 2 seasons. If the football and the squad are right then it can, as has been seen, happen in a single season.

The real answer is that nobody knows. But this clearout absolutely has to be the start of something, and I'd rather wait to see what Adkins can do with it than pay him off and say to some other poor sap that there's no money left.

Minimum three seasons, next season survival, season after rebuild, third season hopefully start to challenge again.

That I think is best case scenario... Could easily be longer

There's no reason why it can't happen next season. We're the biggest club in this division.

Gillingham, Walsall, Burton, Bradford are all up there this season having been nowhere near last year and not even in anyone's thinking for promotion in pre season.

It's simple, get in the right players, pick a system and style of play to suit those players (I don't care what that looks like) and don't sell our best player in August.

Saying it will take three years is utter garbage. It's not like we don't have any infrastructure, amazing facilitaties big budget. It's not like it was in the 80's. We have everything there ready to go, just need 5 quality players and a manager who knows what he's doing.

I would say when we learn to stop selling our best players, but now as they're all gone I highly doubt we will ever be back in the championship

We all know how long it should take. Normal clubs of a comparable size don't need much more than one season. But 'should' is irrelevant. We'll probably be here for another 10 years. Certainly another 5.

'What a time to be alive'

Excellent post. If we had taken this approach and started the clear out and fast track of young players from the start of the season, we'd potentially be further through this process. Whoever the manager is next season needs two years. We need to see more evidence of Adkins abilities next season though: the multitude of extenuating circumstances that existed this season will have largely evaporated next season.

The last time we had a culture change to build a foundation of modern attacking football, we fell through the trap door into the 3rd div......:tumbleweed:

My gut feeling will be 2no seasons maximum , with next season seeing a major culture change at the lane . I can see us doing a Watford or Bournemouth . No not deluded , drunk , just I feel a realisation is hitting home at the lane that a sea of change is required , with sensible thinking and budget.

Yes Adkins has brought apathy , but the cheeky little fucker has more brass tha someone with mind games working for the Stasi or KGB .

A culture change won't happen if they retain the out of contract lot.

True , a clean sweep and even them in interviews saying what they ought to have been saying after the Gillingham game . Failed before and will fail again . Some are punch drunk others couldn't care less . We all have differing opinions who they are , so they all have to go .

My mate a Leeds fan watched the game and he said what the fuck do Flynn n Coutts do to justify I shirt.

Adkins said Flynn played well.

We need to stop blaming managers. We have a manager with a record as good, if not better, than anyone else who'd come to us. A manager I was surprised dropped down a level to be here, and one that was near the top of the list of most fans. And a manager who has always played the attacking football we'd like to see.

What we can't expect is that gambling on expensive season long loans for mediocre players is ever going to be better than buying proven ones like Sharp. We can't expect that bringing in twenty Coutts or JCR types will be good enough. We need to realise that we're going about failure in a very expensive fashion. It really does seem as though we have money and not a clue how to spend it. It's not good business to have one of the best pitches in the country and no one worthy of playing on it. We got new investment, had a big cup run, and we have a Desso pitch and a full back to show for it.

Get rid of everyone we can bar Sharp, Adams, Brayford. Replace them with players with a track record of success at this level or the one higher up like Wolves did. Realise that while this isn't cheap short term, it's cost effective compared to six years of pissing money up the wall on managers and a huge squad of nobodies.

It can be done in one good closed season if we have a manager in place from the start rather than wasting time appointing a new one and then using that as an excuse for not getting much business done.

I don't share the same nightmare scenario about spending years in this division and certainly not battling relegation.
This is the worst team in over three decades by a country mile, and yes I despise these players. Yet in spite of this, we have a slim mathematical chance of reaching the play-offs (and before anyone laughs, no I don't think we stand a chance of doing it either).
It hinges on the summer, whether Adkins sucessfully completes the most crucial restructuring programme of his career is a question of faith. It's not much to go on but it surely beats despairing.

we will go down next season.
!

You will get pelters for that statement but I fully understand it and can see the warning clouds gathering for next season.

At the end of Blackwells last full season I stated on the old 606 board why I felt a relegation fight was on the cards the following season, I highlighted our lack of pace, a weak defence relying on an ageing Morgan, a lack of money and a board bigging up the accademy as our future.

I was castigated for saying it but the following season I was proved right as all those chickens came home to roost.

I see all the same weaknesses in this squad and in the board room that were present then.. The one hope is this IS a weaker division and there may be half a dozen or so teams worse than us.

It could be a close call though

Out of all the players he could have picked your mate picked out Flynn and Coutts? He didn't mention anyone else first?

Couldn't give a fuck what people say, I called relegation last time also.

Worryingly 4 go down in this division.

Seems fair to me. We played a midfield five and not one of them stood out. We didn't dominate possession, win second balls, cover the defence, really anything you'd expect from packing the middle of the park.

I know, I know....

And as the last few years have proven, that counts for exactly.............. fuck all.

Next caller please!

That's my point though, it should count for something. It's counted for Wolves, Forest, Leicester, Leeds, The pigs, Norwich, Southampton. Why should we be any different. It does count for something if the board use it to their advantage. But we all know that's a pretty big if.

After somehow missing out on promotion in our first season down here, I'd have broke down if someone had said this thread would be a thing four years later. Now it's better to try and laugh through the pain.

Who knows how long it'll take. All the other 'big' clubs that have found themselves down here went back up within three seasons at most. The longer we're down here, the harder it's getting to escape. Grim times.

True, couldn't disagree with that but for me Hammond was the weakest link in there. Maybe he got away with it by scoring?
