Nigel Adkins a managerial fraud?

Only half following this thread but still without churning through the whole thing I'd offer:
  • in the game he wasn't left back he was LWB
  • he dropped deep but sometimes he does this - not under instruction
  • he was left back at the end to send McEveley up - it was a gamble - we hit the post - they scored
He made his name as a pacy left-sided midfielder, but proved his versatility when he featured regularly as left-back in the second half of Dale’s promotion-winning campaign.

Half a season is not several seasons I'll give you that.

But we didn't pay that inflated fee for a full back - that's the whole point. We paid for a goalscorer, a front striker who could cover as a winger if needed. You're right, half a season for a player of his age is insignificant. we paid £750k plus the wages commensurate with a player signed for that money.

Personally I have very serious concerns about whether NA is the man to lead us forward. This is not to be mistaken for the ridiculous "mob rule" bullshit that has been spouted on here, nor the "bring back Warnock" bollocks that I've rolled my eyes at as well. I appreciate that the right man needs more time than we are probably prepared to give him right now. Frustrations and anger will overtake apathy at some point if we continue to go backwards. My concern is the Adkins might just be the wrong man to take us forward. It seems to be that we only have to be patient and he will deliver. Really? Based on track record alone? If he had shown us anything this season which made us think he was the right man more of us would be willing to give him time but we have seen NOTHING. A sizeable portion of blame may be down to existing players but he is far from blameless. Formations, tactics, motivation, recruitment etc have been nothing short of woeful. If he stays we need to see as bigger turnaround in in these as we do playing staff. We as fans would need a little more clarity and honesty from him too rather than the stereotypical annoying bullshit waffle he continually comes out with. This alone would buy him more time from the fans. For me I'd like to see a more ruthless approach from him in the last 7 games. Cut the bull and start dropping those who won't be here next year. I need convincing. Over to you Nige

In the persuit of Adkins total football I don't care where any player plays as long as they are comfortable , font let themselves or the team down . Some of these permutations must be tried out in training or in matches behind closed doors . Dones biggest problem he lacks a football brain and concentration , that's why it's a pedigree of Rochdale , Barnsley , Rochdale , Blades .

He is not as good or versatile as some make out , and more of a top league 1 , off the bench impact player. Not trying to be cruel or clever , it's just next season we do need hungry winners , and Done does sometimes seem not to want to be here and likes his comfort zone too much .

I know exactly what you mean but Done could score close to 20 goals if we played him in the right role.

What is that? Complete freedom to do his own thing up front, preferably in a 2 with a big striker like Henderson at Rochdale distracting the opposition defence.

Watching Done I think he looks opinionated, awkward, lacks team discipline, does a lot by instinct alone, just loves sniffing around the 6 yard box where he'll knock in all sorts of goals of various parts of his anatomy from about 5 yards, but also scores goals on the run from further out when the defence are turned. The close-in goals are ones we never imagine because we never have anybody there where the chances fall. They are not sweeping text book moves, they are ricochets, miskicks, rebounds etc.

Can a manger incorporate him into his team? That's the key, can we play a formation that allows a maverick, a loose cannon?

Clough paid big money for him so he must have thought so?? Not sure he did actually, but there we go. That's what we've got! And I rate him highly too.

I'm not sure Adkins knows this side of Done's play, but understand he may not be a perfect partner for Sharp. Good enough though I reckon.

Done I feel is a player who comes as a package with Henderson . I am sure if he went back to Rochdale under manager Hill , he would become a 20 - 25 goal a season player . It's expectstions and pressure and I don't think he has that at Rochdale so plays with freedom. Done is not a disciplined team player again IMO.

.....and in my opinion in the post you were replying to actually:)

Absolutely spot on......He could waste money Warnock. Still can probably.
Ide forgot about Claude Davis .2million you say 2 bloody million. Yer avin a laff what idiot would pay 2 million for Claude Davis?
Stick with Adkins . Dont let Warnock anywhere near. ..........Made my day 2million Phew.

Can't blame Warnock entirely. His list of forwards like Boussatta and Ten Heuvel were all part of a transfer policy that didn't allow big wages or big fees in favour of wasting money on a succession of poor players, hoping that one of them would be a hidden gem. And the Horsfield and Akinbiyi affair where Warnock had supposedly listed them as possible players to get us over the line and then the board spent silly money to bring both in for more than they were worth. And then it continued when we were in the Premiership with a number of small signings like Sommeil, Fathi (for about £700k) that added up equalled a huge waste of cash, where the board said at the start of the season that we couldn't sign Nicky Butt on a free because of wage demands. All part of the weird tactic of not spending money on one player clearly up to the job in favour of ten players none of which are up to it.

I know it's something of an over simplification, but in essence McCabe is saying he's spent £60m out of his own pocket to end up with Coutts and McEveley as the backbone of the squad. It's a big investment he's made over the years when you look back and think the only signing we've really made that was both big money and seemingly worth it was probably Beattie.

Think it's partly a case of the game at this level progressing and him not keeping up with it

I think it's fair to say we may well have spent more on paying off managers and their staff while we've been down here than we have on players.
So who's a fault there ther then ?
