Adkins or Warnock?

To me it boils down to a choice between these two. Warnock would come back, the obstacle is McCabe. But this summer is probably our last opportunity to get Warnock back.

Forget Wilder, Deane, or any other manager with a good CV. We've tried that and failed. To me it's either: a) Stick with Adkins for another season, or b) Get Warnock in. Even if it means McCabe handing over the chairmanship to his son and taking a back seat.

I honestly can't see any other options. If not Warnock, I'd reluctantly give Adkins another season..
 



Does not matter we will still have the same board. Only difference is Warnock will be the one being spun the BS instead of Adkins. In fact Warnock wouldn't come back because he knows McCabe and board are full of shit.

What's my budget? Nothing unless you sell one of the best players we have.
Can I bring any players in at all? Yes but only a few loan players really.
Can I get rid of players? Yes but you will have to find someone daft enough to take them.

In the meantime we will tell the fans that you have our full backing and money to spend on transfers.
 
Neither.

Would much rather a (cheap) rookie. An imaginative Weir type, but with one with real bollocks & backbone. And with a canny, experienced head alongside him.

Looking at the top half of Division Three, six of the top twelve sides (or four of the top six) have either got into the position they're in by using rookies or they've turned to a rookie after a more experienced manager left or failed.

The mystique of the "perfect" manager who'd totally guarantee success for us has gone up in smoke now. The Adkins phenomenon - everyone's choice based on his past record in this division; a disaster in practice.
 
Warnock? He's last years chip paper.

Let's also bring back Bassett as DoF while we're at it.

I'm still behind Adkins (but only just at this point)
 
Makes me laugh all the id have warnock back. His formations and playing players out of position and buying shit got us relegated from the prem. Did he not go for an interview for another job whilst we was going for promotion ( or did i dream that ) i dont know the answer but while ever McCabe has his hands on sheffield united fc we wont go anywhere.

What tint do you have on your glasses to see past all the success and enjoyment to find something to be unhappy about?
 
I would have the man with the lineage of a Warnock and Bassett, and a grounding in non-league and a man with a record of getting teams promoted against all the odds. A man who would preferably be well aware of what it makes to get the Lane rocking, and could galvanise the club and take us forward.

That man goes by the name of Christopher Wilder.

I would endeavour have him tomorrow over Adkins.

Don't know what that means, but for the record I wouldn't have warnock back.
Much as I enjoyed him at the time, and admire what he has achieved after us, including this season, I think we shot that bolt thanks to McCabe and 'beano' when we actually needed him the most.

Facts for me are
1. a succession of managers since NW have managed to further enhance his achievements by comparison,
2. This one appears to be the worst of the lot at the moment.
 
Warnock did exactly what NA has done this season bought shit, played players out of position, and played formations that would baffle anyone. But NA is the devil sporn and warnock is best thing since slice bread. Now the only thing id take from warnock is his passion that is it nothing else. I know NA was bigged up as the next saviour and it hasnt worked.

1. Because he hasnt been backed by the board.
2. He's had to use the shit what clough left us with.
3. Yes he has used formations, played players out of position and even brought in playets that are well below the standard we need to get out of this league.

And yes NA has been a very big disappointment in everyones eyes

But that takes us back to the board in not backing the manager.

We've tried the "manager who's like Warnock or Bassett" approach. That was Micky Adams, and we got relegated.

Sometimes it feels like we're going round in circles

It was just one question actually.
Your post seemed to hint at some undesirable (possibly criminal) activity by Warnock that offended McCabe and isn’t already in the public domain.
If it’s just the usual “He should have signed Beattie as cover for Hulse?”, “He shouldn’t have talked to Portsmouth before rejecting their offer?” type stuff, I can disregard it.

Thats your take on it and I wonder why that is?

Beattie as cover for Hulse is a new one for me particularly because the transfer window was closed when Hulse was injured at Chelsea.

He was never offered the Portsmouth job although how he could reject an offer if he hadn't talked to them is beyond me.
 
The board may or may not have fully backed him but he has been given an awful lot of money to spend on wages/loan fees of Sammon, Hammond, Edgar, Baptise and also the wages of Sharp (+ fee). Not many other clubs i this division have our wage bill. Also the shit that Clough left us managed to get to 7th and 5th in two successive seasons (minus Murphy but plus Sharp).

I am not sure him not being backed by board is a valid argument. He chose to sign Sharp for probably a decent fee and wages. Ditto for other players above.

As for his management/coaching it has been woeful. We have a poor squad (I agree Clough bought some junk) but his job is to motivate, coach and get them playing to best of abilities. He has failed spectacularly. To see other managers with less experience egularly out coach/tactic him is a bigger concern than maybe anything. I have seen nothing to suggest he can

1. Get right players here
2. Get best out of them old or new ones (ones he has brought in - outside of Sharp - playing worst football of career)
3. Find any kind of formation/settled side and system to make players he has play to their best

He was tasked with making us a promotion contenders, changing culture/clearing out deadwood, playing attacking, expansive football, tightening the defence and getting the club 'United' again. We are as divided as ever, further off promotion than any time since we have been down here; still got lots of deadwood (more he has added) and still ship goals all over the place. Performance been awful. Results awful. I actually still like the guy (don't know why) and dont have same level of feeling (maybe should not be personal) I had for likes of Clough, Blackwell, Weir etc but like Wilson, being a nice guy who smiles and says good things does not cut it.

We need a manager who does not give a crap about any players, shakes things up and makes sure they are proud to play for SUFC. Any player at this level should appreciiate facilities, huge ground, fans and chance to be a hero so many are willing them to do. This lot dont give a monkeys and the manager is responsible. We cannot keep blaming Clough. He has had 9 months to at least getting us moving in the right directions. Currently we are heading down rather than up and no chink of light at all.

Ultimately the overriding thought seems to be keep him as there is noone else or we cant keep sacking managers. Not really a good approach as we build towards a better future.
 
I do think we right to sack Clough by the way and the Adkins appointment I was in total favour. Does not mean that if we sack him and it goes wrong we can turn around say we should have kept him. We have no idea what will happen if we sack him or whether we keep him. I am unsure things can get any worse either way or can they?

Tough decision for McCabe. Whatever one he makes it will go wrong. He is great at making mistakes. Maybe he is unlucky (as we all wanted Adkins) but maybe there is something fundamentally wrong with this football club.

a) I'm not sure what you're getting at with your first comment

b) I know the transfer window was closed when Hulse got injured.
That doesn't stop certain critics (maybe not you) saying that Warnock should have had a Premiership quality replacement ready to come in.
Someone who would have been just as good as Hulse but willing to sit on the bench all season just on the off chance he got a game.

c) People can discuss a potential job offer but decide to stay where they are without being formally offered the job.
That concept is really beyond you?

Conventionally this is done in private rather than deliberately leaking it to the press to try to get a better deal at BDTBL. If you want to use the 'threat' of leaving to get a salary increase, you have to be prepared for your existing boss to say, 'bye and good luck with the new job'.

Warnock got carried away with all his TV appearances, brown nosing at Sir Red Nose's party and all the rest of the media shite and took his eye off the ball. Finally on the last day he couldn't decide whether to go for the win or the draw and that fatally did for us.

I was glad to see the back of him although of course hindsight suggest he wouldn't have been as bad as Robson, but then again who knows.
