I’d say the bigger issue he had was that they were all contracted to the club and he could only move on those that were wanted by other clubs. Another big issue was that there seemingly wasn’t enough room in the budget to conduct the overhaul that was required. Admittedly, he could have got better value for money than he did with the signings he has made.
If that was the issue, how has he managed to find clubs for most of his unwanted players in the last few months?
He could have had a similar clear-out in July/August and created himself enough room in the budget then for an overhaul.
It's not that difficult to offload unwanted players before their contract expires.
Most players do want to play and won't stick around forever if it's made clear enough they're not wanted.
Clough did it almost straight away with King, Taylor, Williams, Brandy etc.
It took Adkins a good 3-6 months before he found it wasn't actually an impossible task himself.
And are we forgetting that in both July and January we were reportedly on the verge of spending a "large six figure sum" on Dan Burn?
That suggests that room in the budget wasn't the main problem. Adkins couldn't find anyone "good enough to improve the team".
