Adkins main point was their front two were the difference. Decent enough from Giddings(?), asks a couple of direct questions without the usual preamble.
  • their front two a handful
  • our three centre halves couldn't deal with it
  • narrowed the play and got to grips
  • supporters were good all game - thanks for that - they were
  • lots of crosses but didn't get on the end of them
  • their game management was good - running the clock down
  • our three CHs didn't deal with their two forwards
  • lack of end product
  • Brayford and Done got good crosses in
  • they sat deep after the goal
  • we didn't have the quality today
  • Q: Have the players given up? It was a competitive game - it was, for me quality and speed and early on organisation were the difference, not effort - I also though their 16 was very good and gave us nothing - maybe in his comfort zone defending deep
  • their front two were the difference
  • Baptiste - hamstring - possibly a couple of weeks
  • Sammon trained well
  • we wanted to press and pick up second balls - which is what happened
  • Che hadn't trained so well, needed to do more when he came on - he did, but not good that he's naming him like this. Personally I thought we had no chance when he came on, but this is a bit Clough/McNulty - emotive time after a game, but needs to tone this down
  • Scoogs been in treatment room more than anyone - do an audit of injuries and he's had the most time out - came on at Rochdale, and got injured after 15 minutes there
  • Bob injured at Fleetwood - similar story
  • JCR been out of the equation on a 24h recall out of contract at the end of the season - mention of contract, taken at face value, is a clear indication he won't be retained I think
  • 24h recall - Scoogs and Bob the same
  • Freeman injured, Wallace (J) injured
  • back to the match...good following - it really was
  • re loans next week Edgar away, Baptiste likely out, McGahey been patient
  • two [Scoogs and JCR] out gives, more freedom for ins
  • we have been trying but they're staying at their parent clubs
  • might change

Agree, not good at all.

On the one hand Sammon "trained well" & is picked, on the other Adams "hasn't had a particularly good week on the training ground" & is benched. Sammon's "got all the attributes"; Adams "needed to make an impact" & he "needed to do more than what he's gone & done".

Sort of admirable protecting Sammon. But if you're gonna take that approach (one he extends to, say, Hammond too on a regular basis), then don't take your frustrations out on a teenager, one of the very few genuinely talented footballers at the club. Especially when the experienced player you're defending didn't "have an impact" (to be polite) by all accounts.

Don't know how many times Nige is gonna need to see that however well Sammon trains, he can't do it "in the arena" (for whatever reason). The remnants of his "give everyone a chance" policy are taking a seriously long time to die out.

So which game was Adkins watching, it quite clearly wasn't the same one i was watching, and for clarity i watched Millwall v Sheffield United at the Den yesterday.

You're delusional Kev. Just bite the bullet and sack him.

Folk won't think your any bigger knob than they do already!

Given we've known the season is over for about a month, the remaining games for me are all about attempting to get us right for next season. If playing Sammon to give Adams a kick up the arse means we ultimately have a player next season with a better attitude, then it'll have been worthwhile. We can't have a situation where we slag players off for not putting the effort in, and then slag the manager off for taking steps to remedy that attitude. The last thing we want is a lazy player complacent that he won't get dropped because of the dross behind him in the pecking order.

Easy for me to say having not had to endure watching Sammon yesterday mind...

Would be great that if Sammon was a senior professional who younger players look up to with respect , as Sammon does the business both on and off the pitch week in week out for 90 minutes.

If I was a younger player the Sammon situation would fuck me off big style . Or is it another Hammond situation were us fans don't see the work he does off the ball. We've a lot of them type players , good job Adkins knows what he is doing and we are in safe hands .

Quite clearly Sammon isn't rated by Adkins, which is why he's been largely missing from the starting lineup, but we were stuck with him till the summer. He made a point about publicly stating they were giving Adams & Sharp a go up top, so it sounds like Adams has slackened off in the week perhaps out of compacency. I don't think Sammon's involvement yesterday is anything to be too worried about – he will not be with us again after the season ends. Hammond is a different matter mind...

Three minutes in, how to do this schtick properly

Only a few weeks ago Adkins was bemoaning players doing well in training but not producing "in the arena." It seems that's out of the window now and a serial under-performer gets preferred to a 19 year old who's been doing quite well of late.

They've got to do both. There's plenty I don't agree with Adkins on at the minute, but if he's seen a player not their weight during training then I completely agree with how he's handled – particularly as it's a player we want to develop in the right way. Clough would have done exactly the same – and he'd have been right to do so too.

Agreed. But I'd have brought a youngster in for the sake of it. I'd be making a statement that Sammon wasn't part of my plans, for everyone's sanity.

Fair point. If Adams has been taking the piss or slacking, he will have needed pulling up for it, like you say.

Just would have preferred Adkins making a point to Adams by using DCL (or even Jake Wright, say).

Had a look at the game and in isolation I didn't think it was quite as bad as has been made out. The frustration and disappointment accumulated over several seasons mean that performances seem even worse than they really are. Having said that, it was still poor. Work rate isn't the main problem, but I think the current project is one that neither the players or Adkins really believes in. Coupled with a tactical set up that isn't the manager's preferred one, nor one that the players are used to, means that we're struggling to work as a team offensively and defensively.

We have to look at the table, which still tells us that we're only six points off a play offs place, and just keep going, but it would be a huge shock if this season was to end in promotion. Some people have written off this season weeks ago, and maybe that's been the best way to stay sane. If fans keep hoping for things to "click" all of a sudden I think there will be more frustration and disappointment.

With this in mind maybe it's for the best to not look too much into what's happened and will be happening for the rest of this campaign. It will probably be something very different next season, even if the current management is allowed to continue. I think we'll just have to hope that things will improve when Adkins is allowed to bring in players that he thinks suit his style of football. It certainly hasn't worked with the squad he inherited and has tried to tweak.

On a different note, earlier today I went to watch the Blades U14s in the final of a tournament here in Bergen. They lost 4-0 to a impressive Hammarby side, but they won it last year and reaching the final again is a decent achievement. I watched the game with this gentleman:

I guess it depends what "not trying in training" actually means. I'm guessing it's not just giving only 75% in a session.
