Depends what kind of deal he may be on but he's been OK in recent weeks and the problem is as much the players around him. How much better did Doyle look when he had Coady, McDonald, Williamson etc around him ?

Speaking as an Adkins, fan I still have to agree with you.

Of course, there's a few issues to counter;

We don't know the wages for sure.

We do look less beatable when Hammond plays.

But overall, I'd be disappointed if we weren't looking for more up and comers. My worry is that the club thinks the academy fills that gap. I probably have mentioned this before ( ) but it doesn't.

Hammond is the sort of player you sign if you still have the budget for it after you sign defenders who can defend and midfielders who can create and score semi-regularly.

I hope someone at the club has learned some lessons from this season. Tying up a lot of wages in Hammond will be a sign they haven't.

I also think we can get someone in to do what Hammond does for considerably less than we will have to pay him.

Good effort considering we haven't even reached the cut-off for 10 bookings yet !

He tends to get stupid bookings from what I've seen, pulling players back etc which is probably down to his lack of pace. Doesn't look like it's been a problem in recent seasons.

It's all about the right balance, if you look at Prem teams, Barry at Everton, Carrick at ManU, Noble at WHam, Fletcher at WBA etc with the younger players around them. I know League 1 is a different matter and you're right about resources but would Brown have had such a great season without McCall for example.

While you can argue over individuals the generalisation means we would never have signed Speed or McCall in the past. I totally disagree with this sentiment. What we should do is sign any player on merit in spite of age etc.

Oh and because of an article in the star and someone guessing what he earns everyone goes into meltdown. Better work with facts than supposition.

Surely he has to be on a high wage coming from a premier league club, so why are we thinking of blowing our budget on him? Is he going to be taking a paycut to join us?
It would also mean that we have two high wages with him and Brayford in the team and tbh they are not game changing players that are going to win you games.

Passing the ball backwards when in space under no pressure and with options ahead of you isn't doing the basics well, it's taking the easy option, passing on responsibility and stifling the team.

Surely somebody, somewhere at the club can see that we can't be signing him on decent wages. My worry is that they've already agreed to sign him on a certain amount, probably based on Adkins' confidence when he first signed that he wasn't totally past it.

If we sign him we're giving ourselves an even bigger mountain to climb than we have already. He won't be able to play in Adkins' preferred 4-4-2 and in a 4-3-3 you'd need to have two quick and technically very good players to compensate for him.

We could've easily signed Sam Morsy or at least someone like him but we're going to be stuck with Hammond instead. The club that just keeps on giving.

As others have said, we'll probably offer him the chance to do some coaching and pick him up on L1 wages.

Agree completely with that. Also, if we're going to go down the route of placing more youngsters into the first team, I think we will need some good experienced heads (good experience, not Collins-esque experience) to aid their development.

One signing that tends to get overlooked in this is Craig Short. He might not have been fit enough to play consistently but I thought he greatly helped to improve our defensive shape the year we went up. If we'd have signed a 36 year old central defender in the transfer window that was an old chum of the manager there would probably have been outrage on this board.

I didn't really want to talk to him about football as it didn't seem appropriate but once we got on to the subject I mentioned Hammond being suspended, in his words "you wouldn't believe how hard Hammond works until you play with him". He isn't the greatest player we've seen grace Bramall Lane but in this league he is perfect for what we need (providing he has the right players around him). I would take him next year on a one year deal providing he lowers his wage demands.

That might be so, but it's about the result of that hard work and how effective it is. And it's definitely questionable.

Adkins is trying to integrate youth into our first team, and to do so effectively you need players like Hammond, complete role models and professionals, to inspire them and aid their progress. I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to have players like this in the squad. Even if we signed him and he only played a handful of games, his contribution behind the scenes would more than make up for it.

People want to bring in young players instead of him, and that's all well and good, but you do need experience somewhere in the squad to get the most out of the young players and to guide them. Hammond is perfect for this, so why not him?

I understand that many people fail to see what he brings to the table, but there is far more to Dean Hammond than meets the eye, and he is worth every penny (and I'd be willing to wager that he would be on nowhere near the wages many on here seem to think should he sign permanently). It would be a bonus if he eventually took up a coaching role here, as he is exactly the sort of person we should be looking to have around the club.

I would imagine if he joins he would still be one of the top earners. I very much doubt we would offer him the sort of deal he'll be currently on though – which is why I'm generally quote relaxed on the suggestion he might join, but obviously that has to be alongside a number of other squad alterations we make this summer.
