Would you ever want the Blades to lose?

I'd love us to make losing a game to screw them over so obvious as well. The more obvious the better. And then everyone just shrug and say "We tried our best but today we just weren't good enough.

Man City tried their best to lose a game against Wendy several decades ago (No money changed hands and there were no betting scandals obviously) because our ever so honourable neighbours wouldn't have been involved in anything like that at the time

But, try as Man City did to lose they still beat them

That was when they went down in 1970. City even missed a penalty on purpose. Fortunately, Ian Bowyer wasn't in on the fix and scored the winner after coming on as substitute - it finished 2-1 to City.

To make it even more fun, the game was played in torrential rain so all the Pig fans on the roofless kop got drenched.

Yes Mike Doyle took the penalty and rolled it straight to Peter Grummitt

Yes - if we we top of which ever league we were in and clear so no one could catch us and we were playing a team that if they beat us it would mean the pigs or say weeds were relegated I'd probably be routing for the opposition.

It's not happened yet. There'd be a temptation if it relegated pigs and made no difference to us. Or if it got a manager I thought was horrendous the sack (so for the longer term good) but at the time of the match, I don't think I would feel anything but gutted when the goals went in against us.

Funnily enough, yes! I think it was in 1991 (or 92) where we hosted Leeds (had to be them didn't it?) and if they won they they were more or less crowned champions. But if they'd have lost, then Man Utd and Sheff Wednesday would have been back in the title race with one game to go. Leeds beat us 3-2 and yes its always sickening losing to Leeds, but when you know that your neighbours cant do shit to win the the old first division, it sort of made me feel better! ;)

I was listening to Radio 5 Drive programme this evening and they had an email from someone who described himself as a 'Massive Newcastle fan', who wanted Leicester to beat them tonight as he wants Leicester to win the title.

My immediate thoughts were that he isn't a real supporter if he wants his team to lose, so another team can win the title.

Can you think of any circumstances in which you would want the Blades to lose a game?
Not sure I can.

Wendy need use to beat whoever we're playing to win the title or relegation.

In our penultimate game in 79-80, we were at home to Chesterfield. We had nothing to play for and Wednesday were probably going to get the last promotion place. However there was a (very - GD was massively against them) outside chance that Chesterfield could pip them if they won all their remaining games including the one at the Lane. Chesterfield beat us 2-0.

I wasn't at the game and wondered if United fans did indeed support CFC. Was anyone there who can comment?

I was there Darren and it never entered or ever enters my head to throw a game .Can't understand anyone thinking like that.
Win win win is my mantra !! I would think most football fans feel the same way.Perhaps some may go into a game with that
thought but surely when the games kicks off they want there team to win.

If the match meant nothing to us in terms of winning owt or staying up and losing it would get the Pigs or L**ds relegated, I'd be ok with losing.

Well I'm shocked and stunned by many of the responses.

If you can't beat them join them.

COME ON MILLWALL!!

Not sure how Millwall winning will stop those fucking piggy cunts getting promoted but hey, let's go.

Can't really believe anyone would want us to win a meaningless match only to see the pigs going/staying up, not quite got the idea of a rivalry.

This was the table going into that Chesterfield game

http://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-division-three/26-april-1980/

CFC 4 points behind SWFC ( 2 points for a win), with CFC having 2 games left and Wednesday 1. SWFC 14 GD better off. So if CFC won their 2 remaining games 5-0 and SWFC lost theirs 5-0, CFC would go up.

As I say, a very small chance, but a heavy CFC win at the Lane would have helped :) As it was SWFC drew their last game and went up.

The other point. of course, is that if we had drawn or won that game, that would have seen Wednesday's promotion confirmed at the Lane* At least we avoided that.

* I wondered how many SWFC fans turned up to the game to support United.....

If I stood to win a bet for summat like 100k upwards, and I'd backed against United and it was the only result left, probably (unless it was promotion/relegation defining) - otherwise it'd have to be the pigs scenario.

That was April 2002. People were willing Barnsley to go down, and United played their part by spending the whole of the second half pinging long balls towards 5 foot 7 Lewis Killeen.

I was livid because (a) I'd travelled from London to see that disgrace of a performance and if I'd have known they'd do that I wouldn't have bothered and (b) people have short memories. Walsall put us in the 4th Division - why should we help them?
Difference is Walsall would have gone down if they had not won that games. Fucking Don Givens. And fucking John Matthews.

I was at that Chesterfield match. Don't remember any Blade not minding to lose to Chesterfield. Geoff Salmons and Ernie Moss scored for them. Alan Birch gave one of the best displays I have seen by a visiting player. The ball seemed to stick to his feet and going past our players

Were people not bothered that unless Chesterfield won, Wednesday's promotion would be confirmed?

Don't remember, don't think it really registered to me that night that us getting a point at least would confirm Wendy's promotion. I was disappointed and wasn't looking forward to going to work in the next morning (I was working in Chesterfield then)

I assume that, given the GD, people accepted Wednesday were up anyway. Were there any Wednesday fans there hoping to see promotion clinched?

Don't remember. I had lost some passion for the Blades and might not have gone to the match that night if I didn't have a season ticket. After leaving school in 1979 I decided to buy a season ticket. My dad said he wasn't going anymore after the relegation. A week or two after I left school I decided to play football regularly on Saturdays despite having already bought a season ticket. My dad thought that it would be better for me to play so in encouraging me to do that he said he would use my season ticket whenever I played football. I was a part-timer for most of the 1980s and my recollection for matches from that decade isn't even half as good as my recollection for the matches in the 1970s. I do remember some of the Wendy lads in Dronfield going to Wendy's last match of the season at Exeter the previous Saturday, they lost but everyone accepted that they were virtually promoted

Indeed if it meant nothing to our season but meant the pigs were relegated or didn't get promoted. Think of the bigger picture.
Hey thats a blast from the past those lyrics on the bottom of your post.
Anybody else on here know em, I do

Fair enough, I think it's pretty clear that if something like that happen these days, you'd get thousands of Wednesday fans trying to get tickets for the game.....

If we could play a weakened team because we were in a cup final and it meant wet spam and Man U went down, then bring it on (unless we were playing pigs or dirty weeds).

Just asked two of my workmates who are Wendy fans. Both went to Exeter and they were certain that Chesterfield wouldn't overtake them so they didn't go to the Lane the following Tuesday and they don't remember hearing of Wednesday fans going to watch the Blades v Chesterfield match cheering for the Blades. I am sure there would be some Wednesday fans at the match but don't remember noticing any

And then a spaceship lands at the Lane looking for Jonjo Shelvey to take him home whilst Georgie Ainsley uses the PA to propose to me.

Which is more likely than us being in a cup final.

That's a good question. Don't think too many will without looking them up.

Used to love em as a kid, in fact I still play their stuff now - hence the lyrics. Top band. Singer has become a bit of a cunt in my eyes though. Still love the music though.

I could just envisage the scenario, now. Blades have nothing to play for and the Wendies desperate for us to not lose the game because it would either scupper their promotion campaign or condemn them to a relegation.
The big game pressure - after all those failed attempts at semi-finals and play off finals to worry about.

Of course we'd win the fucking game under those circumstances

Editions of You was my favourite track on that album.
Roxy Nights in the Daisy back in the day eh
