The parallels are there for all to see. Expectations should be high. The fans are right.

"Do Newcastle fans expect too much?

This is the age-old - and unfair - question aimed at the Toon Army.
Expectations should be high at Newcastle United.

This is a captive audience with a burning passion for the game and their football club - so, yes, expectations should not be played down.
...
Those vast crowds, of course, bring pressure - but no more than 76,000 watching at Old Trafford or 60,000 at Arsenal - and every Newcastle player knows they will be elevated to almost deity status should they give those supporters the success they crave.

Newcastle's fans are not expecting Premier League titles or Champions League successes - just more than the constant diet of mediocrity they have been fed.

In reality, the Toon Army has been patient. This is club that has not won a major trophy since the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup - a little expectation is excusable."

Fan base, resources and size do not guarantee on field success.

Aston Villa and probably Newcastle will be relegated to the second tier of English football and who would have thought that Leicester might just win the Premier League?

There is no divine right to success for Newcastle any more than for the likes of Sheffield United.

  • What they should expect is better than 19th place with 24 points from 28 games after an outlay since the summer of almost £80m on eight players.
£80m? Nope they ain't writing about us.

The only thing in common is we both have owners who don't care if the club actually achieves anything, so long as the fans turn up every week and the sponsorship/tv deals keep on coming. If we ever actually got to the big dance, we would be Newcastle. Happy to just stay up by a few points every year, until one year we employ a wally with a brolly and it all goes tits up.

Indeed. But I would rather support a club like that than a plastic one like Man Utd

Plastic in what way? Had you said Chelsea then you had me but Man U are not a big club because of rich owners. They just are a big club. Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal I have no truck with either. City I cannot stand because they have done everything on the back of fake shake money.

I've lived in Newcastle for nearly 30 years and only managed to persuade half of my kids to follow me and United, so I have got some experience of both clubs. I was also at St James Park on Saturday for a hugely entertaining match, for the neutral.

I shared the Dane Whitehouse thread with my colleagues and whilst we all agreed with the sentiments, and wish we could have that back, its also fair to say that we all agreed that football has moved on and maybe we haven't.

To me it's really interesting that the two biggest overachievers in the league this season, Leicester and Bournemouth, are serial abusers of the administration system. Newcastle and United can resent that and argue that we suffer from solvency and the caution of owners whose who are carrying debts built up over half a century. I've always thought that if a club can't pay its way at any level it should be sent back down to the county leagues and asked to work its way back up. That is a fair exchange for the kind of baggage Newcastle and United are continuing to carry.

What you can't argue with is how Bournemouth played on Saturday, free of fear, hardworking without being overly physical and an absolute joy to watch, even in pink. That's with a team that both of our clubs could easily have had on the park if we had appointed the right people and not tried to be over clever with our recruitment policy. In Newcastle's case they could have afforded Bournemouth three times over.

I do not agree with this nonsense.

It beggars belief to think that McCabe and the Prince want anything other than success for our club. Why would they invest millions of pounds (£100m) if they did not care? It does not make sense.

As in fans...I could have said Chelsea or Man City but on reflection they have long term diehards as well. I suppose any successful side attracts fair weather fans as well as the fawning media, and these are what piss me off. It's safe to say we have no fair weather fans.
