As nowadays watching United is about the day out and no longer about watching the football I shall describe my highlights of the day.
- Poulton le fylde which had the air of the type of place you went to when on holiday as a kid with your Gran where she would spoil you.
- The Thatched House pub in Poulton for its simply excellent welcome and ale range. The kind of place where your Grandad would sit whilst your Gran spoilt you.
- Uncle Dave's big sausage in the local butchers next to the Old Town Hall pub. I didn't ask the very attractive girl behind the counter why it was so named, but Aunty Dave would be a happy lady!
- Meeting the Swinton Blades who offered us a space in their cab and saved the hassle of the bus and who set some ace football quiz questions en route.
- The Strawberry Gardens pub that somehow was selling Italian cider for £2.20 for 1.2 litres.
- Fleetwood's enlightened policy of selling white wine at half time.
- The fact the sun shone in my face for about 25 minutes, when I'd been expecting snow.
- Changing trains at Preston and hearing that Jamie Murphy was doing well from some of the Brighton lads in the Heroes bar on the station. He would still be with us if we didn't have feckwits littering the club at every level,
As for the football, the only player who showed even a bit of being bothered was Matty Done, but why he was playing where he was baffled me a little.
A nice day out really and in many ways the football got in the way of making it a great day out.
Up the Blades and I long for the day when the team care even just a little bit, when watching the football is the reason for going and when something more than the best sausage I've seen outside of Bavaria provides my highlight of the day.
