When this wretched season is over and our incumbent manager has swung the axe and rid us of this awful bunch of slackers. How many fans are going to be confident he is going to re-populate the squad with players who can achieve the "holy grail" of promotion next season. I would estimate its probably about 50/50 amongst the fans to whether Adkins should stay or go. But the pro Adkins lobby are basing their support of the beleaguered manager around the fact this season is a transitional period of "rebuilding" another managers squad.
In reality though Adkins would counter that next season is the real "transition" season and necessary time must be afforded to him to completely rebuild a new squad.
I like many feel Adkins and his coaching staff are as culpable as the players for creating this current state of limbo that the club finds itself in. I personally feel the club needs to look elsewhere to find the inspiration for next season.
Good post with some valid points.
Did you feel the same way about Bassett when he took us down?
I do see some similarities between the two, positive managers, not a pot to piss in, though Bassett was able to actually sell some players because other clubs were willing to pay for them...and start to get his own players in.
Warnock took about seven years to get a squad together capable of promotion, whilst at times playing some rubbish, cynical football.
Bad times both.
Adkins has stated that the work for next season is already under way, and while some will rightly question his recruitment policy based on this seasons omnishambles, a new management team coming in would be starting from a disadvantage in many ways...perhaps the biggest of which being not knowing the wiles, ways and workings of our current board.
Often we see the true character of a person in the lowest of times. I think in this respect Adkins has managed well and comes across as being in control, despite some very large problems with club, which he appears to be working through diligently.
Of course, this being football, Adkins/Turnbull, could be adequately backed to assemble their new squad and still fail..However, I do think they deserve a proper go at it though.
Just my two-penneth.
