2015/2016 Sheffield United First Team Squad Contracts

Woolford is basically this season's Ben Davies – a player we didn't need to bring in, but a familiar face that the manager thought it would be useful to hang around. I don't actually think he was brought in as a first choice player – it's a reflection of how poor our options have been that he's featured as much as he has.

I sort of see this summer as an opportunity akin to Charlton in summer 2011. Powell came in, brought 13 players in which gave the whole squad a fresh look, and they never really looked back that year. We currently have 14 players contracted to be with us for next season. That's as close to a blank sheet of paper for a squad as a manager is likely to have at a football.

That is an insult to Ben Davies, who scored 4 goals in the first 8 games and was doing well until injury/Clough dropping him. He achieved more in those games than Woolfo d has in half a season.

Agree with the Charlton comparison. Big chance to clear the decks, which we probably won't take.

Ryan Flynn - Contracted till end of June 2016 + optional year extension

Oh, and if this option is taken up I will personally go down the Lane and beat the person who made the decision over the head repeatedly with a copy of "Sheffield United: the Complete Record".

And I'll be using the heavier 2012 edition, not the original 1999 edition.

It's the plan, only thing I can think of.

This time next season 72 points and flying high.

Mysterious to me how Davies did well for us and was suddenly ditched by Clough. One of those 'is he unfit or isn't he' situations.

Players who can take dead ball crosses with a vicious swerve and score from free kicks for the same reason, can provide assists from open play and compete well for the ball physically and throughout their careers are invaluable.

Hey Foxy/ Linz. We could do with an update to contracts as we draw towards the end of the season. Becoming urgent in fact foxy

Not quite as urgent as the other things on my list sadly :)

But yeah, it's due an update

Ben Davies - again, not nearly good enough. Evidence;

My own eyes
The market of the professionals, which placed him in England's fourth division.

These things aren't coincidence.

What's wrong with this list posted by LoughboroBlade above? It looks about right to me apart from Baptiste loaned until June 2016:-

So presumably then, this is the situation ahead of the summer. All in red expiring. Amber expires next summer.

Only 5 players are contacted till 2018, all of whom we'd be looking to keep anyway. Hell of a lot more flexibility compared to a year ago. Remains to be seen whether the optional years in the deals expiring this summer are held by club or player, though I'd suspect the former.

Goalkeepers:
Mark Howard - Contracted till end of June 2016
George Long - Contracted till end of June 2016
George Willis - Contracted till end of June 2016

Defenders:
John Brayford - Contracted till end of June 2018
Neill Collins - Contracted till end of June 2016
Bob Harris - Contracted till end of June 2016
Keiron Freeman - Contracted till end of June 2017
Terry Kennedy - Contracted till end of June 2016 + optional year extension
Jay McEveley - Contracted till end of June 2016
Harrison McGahey - Contracted till end of June 2016 + optional year extension
David Edgar - loan till June 2016 (Birmingham contract expires June 2016)

Midfield:
Che Adams - Contracted till end of June 2018
Chris Basham - Contracted till end of June 2017
Jose Baxter - Contracted till end of June 2016
Jamal Campbell-Ryce - Contracted till end of June 2016
Paul Coutts - Contracted till end of June 2017
Florent Cuvelier - Contracted till end of June 2016
Ryan Flynn - Contracted till end of June 2016 + optional year extension
Callum McFadzean - Contracted till end June 2016
Louis Reed - Contracted till end of June 2018
Stefan Scougall - Contracted till end of June 2017
James Wallace - Contracted till end of June 2016 ("two years with an option of a third" was from Clough's interview at the time that I just re-listened to. Only place I've seen three years mentioned as the length is The Star – inclined to believe Clough and the BBC report, and put the discrepancy down to lazy Shield reporting)
Keiron Wallace - Contracted till end of June 2018
Martyn Woolford - Contracted till end of June 2017
Dean Hammond - loan till June 2016 (Foxes contract expires July 2016)
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - Contracted till end of June 2018

Strikers:
Diego DeGirolamo - Contracted till end of June 2017
Matt Done - Contracted till end of June 2017 + optional year extension
Marc McNulty - Contracted till end of June 2017
Billy Sharp - Contracted till end of June 2017
Conor Sammon - loan till June 2016 (Derby contract expires June 2016)

Is that so. I must say I looked at George Long's contract and thought it was out of date. Looking at the others now, they look correct. Thanks Sothall.

Look at all that lovely red. Only ones in red that I would look to keep are Long, Flynn if fit and maybe McGahey on the basis that he's young and the optional year may be worth a punt as he will be relatively cheap too

For me it would be Long, McEveley, and possibly Flynn. Long and McEveley have done enough to warrant contracts based on their performances this year, and to be honest I'm surprised to be saying that, as back in September I'd have said both should be released. Flynn probably depends on how he continues in the current formation – I like his versatility, but I'm somewhat sceptical that he seems to have only started performing as his contract nears expiry.

The rest though, I'd release. Might be harsh in some cases, but I don't think any of the rest have made a strong enough case to be retained. Really hoping the year option on Wallace can only be activated by the club rather than the player.

One error I spotted a while back on the revision I did – we have an extra year's option on Sharp's contract.

Ben Whiteman's contract also expires this summer I believe, after we took an extra year's option last summer. One to sign up asap I'd have thought.

Surely we'll offer Whitman a new contract - he'll cost peanuts. As for Flynn, he hasn't earned a renewal, but if the best we can do in that area is signing someone like Woolford then we may as well re-sign Flynn. As a squad player he's fine.

The only other I'd add to your list is Kieron Wallace. The rest aren't even in question - get rid. And I'd pay off a couple of the 2017 expiries early as well.

Kieran Wallace, as indicated, is already contracted till 2018 (listed in midfield as that's where he was originally, probably needs relabelling).

I'm sure Whiteman will be offered a new deal. We usually like to highlight these contracts in the press, so the lack of any announcement is surprising. Perhaps it's already sorted and we're waiting till the announcement in May as one of the small number of retentions amongst what I hope we'll be looking back on as "The Great Squad Cull Of Summer 2016".

Given that none of the players who are out of contract have been offered new deals yet, does this indicate they'll all be let go? Surely they can't let Long go, I feel like he's done enough to keep a place in the team, McEveley too. When are these things usually sorted out?
I'd let the rest of them go.

Don't mind who he gets rid of as long as he doesn't bring anyone in till we know for sure he'll still be here next season .....
