I agree about Coady ( the best thing Weir did) but he was looking at the exit door at Liverpool and I think might have signed for us if we had gone up. I have seen it referred to several times that he wanted Championship level or better, but it is questionable how hard we tried on that - Clough thought he had the bargain of the century with Wallace I think and didn't pursue it other than an initial enquiry.

Baxter wasn't a bad signing, certainly compared to some others. Cuvelier could've been a brilliant signing but for his injuries, and Coady was a great loan addition.

Weir was actually the last manager of ours who had the right ideas when it comes to recruitment.

Think there are questions to be answered on our utter lack of apparent positive intent in the transfer market or loan window. Also think there is some absolute shit written by people who don't actually know but just assume.

Like the comment about Weir being the last manager to get good players in. I'm sorry but they were that good we were in a relegation position when he left. Coady didn't look a deal until Clough took hold of him. Clough got Brayford and because of the January activity and shrewd management got us close to the play offs. It was that expectation that hung him when his first full season wasn't such a joy ride.

Clough divides but to not acknowledge his contribution that first season is to neglect all sound reason.

My abiding childhood memory of late 70s Blades is potentially exciting free kicks just inside the opposition half floating gently, safely, and utterly incompetently into the crowd behind the goal.

Come to think of it that McEveley pass made me feel almost nostalgic.

Is 'right ideas' the same as saying 'good players'? Some of them were shit, like McGinty, some were good/unlucky with injuries but they were almost all the types of players most of us want the club to focus on signing now.

I have always thought that Clough is what I would call a good "three wheels on my wagon" manager - ie good at making do with what he has got. Equally I have always thought he put too much stake on his brother and an antiquated approach to scouting and player acquisition and his squad building was poor. Burton next season will be interesting as Clough is using JFH's squad this season and a lot of the plaudits should go to him.

Weir (for all his managerial faults - and there were many) had contacts and a good reputation for bringing on young players the right way and he was able to land Coady on loan. I never got the impression that Clough was respected in the game in the same way to be honest. Having said that, if you spend a lot of money on an academy I can imagine there would be reluctance at Board level to sign players on loan who we have no realistic chance of signing permanently. With Coady there was a chance I would suggest, but that all but disappeared when we didn't make the Championship. In the end Coady's appearances for us helped Liverpool recoup some money for him and helped Coady get a new club at a decent level.
