Bardsley will boost a Blades team which has struggled this year
Sheffield United have signed Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley on loan, reports BBC Radio Sheffield.

Bardsley, 22, who was on loan at Aston Villa and Rangers last season, has moved to Bramall Lane for three months.

Meanwhile, Blades manager Bryan Robson has said he is hoping to sign a midfielder within the next 48 hours."

Robbo on double bid

Having paved the way to snap up Manchester United's Phil Bardsley on loan, Bryan Robson is also poised to bring in a central midfielder.

The Blades boss announced that 22 year old Salford born right back Bardsley who played 13 games on loan at Aston Villa last season would be moving to the Lane shortly, and then added "I am hopeful of bringing in a central midfielder either today or tomorrow."

Although refusing to divulge the player of club involved, Robson admitted: "I am always on the look-out for Premiership players as they are usually comfortable with the demands of dropping down a level."

Bardsley has made eight league and cup starts for the Reds and also been out on loan at Burnley and Rangers, and Robson feels the time is right to revert to a specialist in the right back slot:

"With Gary Naysmith and Derek Geary both having injury problems this season it has been unfair on Gary Cahill and Leigh Bromby to keep using them at right back. They have both done a good job for us but they are really centre-halves, so Phil will strengthen that area of the team.

"I have seen a lot of him, he's a tough-tackling and hard working player who will improve us. The loan is for three months but I wouldn't discount the possibility of it being made long term eventually."

Manchester United's Carling Cup exit undoubtedly changed Alex Ferguson's mind about loaning out his talented youngsters and another - Darron Gibson - is one the Blades missed out on:

"I was disappointed to miss out on Darron who chose Wolves because he is someone I like as a player."
