The expectations of Sheff Utd fans

Clearly statements from JP, KM and son and the Prince have fuelled the fans expectations, bit bizarre to now turn round and use "expectation" as an excuse for not delivering.

There was an opinion piece in one of the papers today about Aston Villa that could have been about united. The points made were how ridiculous it was that Villa had gone all out to acquire a good manager but then at the first attempt let him down by making no signings when they were clearly needed. He then went on to talk about how the Villa board had effectively written off the season which was an insult to the fans who had payed good money for season tickets
The facts are even more alarming. There recruitment is overseen by a former marketing man from Arsenal (Tom Fox) and is done mainly by a couple of data analysts. They are bringing in players based on what is little more than a sophisticated version of FM.
And the reality is, because Garde has done the square root of fuck all since he's been there, no one is interested in playing for Villa. They couldn't recruit now because they're as close to dead certs for relegation as Derby were under Pork Jewell.
This kind of mindless management where the likes of marketing men and data analysts are riding a huge gravy train, bullshitting owners and wasting huge amounts of their money is becoming endemic in football.

We're market leaders in this field but we're being caught up by the likes of Villa. It used to be that occasionally you'd get a big club in the third division but they'd only be there a couple of seasons. Us and Coventry are showing that you can now end up stuck there in an ever decreasing circle of failure. There will be others and within the next few years L1 will start to resemble the Championship

Jim said on radio Sheffield that it doesn't help that their words from
When they first joined have been twisted to help create this expectation.

I guess we twisted Jims bizarre statement classing player transfer income and cup runs as "board investment as they hadn't taken it out of the club " as well then.

What a set of bastards we are.

Completely agree with everything above and have one addition

I want to walk out of the lane every other Saturday with a smile on my face, win loose or draw
'd'blade56 wtf © infringement admin! ;) I've been hacked

Is it too unrealistic, to expect promotion from League One??

There aint no hiding from expectation when you're the presiding board of SUFC in the third. They'll blame it all on the latest patsy, Adkins. You know it makes sense.

My expectations were to have a team that played to the best of their abilities every single game. A team that would go out on the pitch determined no to let their teammates, manager and fans down. A team that tried as hard as they could, and often played above and beyond what was expected of them.

Now I expect a collection of misfits to go through the motions and hope to not get a good tupping against a side who would, not so long ago, shit themselves at the thought of a trip to Bramall Lane and facing a side roared on by a passionate and partisan crowd.

I want to see a side that tries their best. A side that cares. I don't see that now. Most of the players on the pitch aren't fit to lace the boots of past players. Most of Warnock's mistaken signings that didn't last long would stand head and shoulders above most of this lot. The only one who seems to care is Sharp.

Judging by an ever dwindling set of apologists for the board on here, we're part of the 'want it now' society and are expectation is unreasonable

I think that's my main issue. I don't see promotion from this division as high expectation.

The one above maybe. But division 3?

Did they do ANY research on us before taking over?

if we say a generation of supporters for arguments sake is 20 years so last 2 generations 40 years
Or 1 generation if you think its 40

but since 1976
we have spent 5 seasons in the top division
24 in the championship
10 in league 1 and one in div 4 league 2

so we have been twice as long in div 3 and 4 than we have the top league

harsh fact if you add 2 of those 5 in the top flight were relegation years
so 3 of the last 40 weve managed to cling on in the top league

so why do some see us as a fixture there

so in the last generation weve spent 25 per cent of it in the third division , and stayed up in the top flight 8 per cent of it

"Think Liverpool" and "Game Changing Investment" words straight from the mouth of Kevin McCabe. No twisting whatsoever

Haha that's fucking class.

It's not class, it's shameful

Jim says it's our fault because we twist everything we've been told.

It's about time you dropped your opposition to those who say it's the fans fault Pete. You've now had it from the top that it is :(

Sorry but this is just plain impossible. Lets say they think the squad is shit and cant wait to offload. Then you dump the teams morale on the floor and we end up in the bottom 4 with players looking around for other clubs. Adkins appears to be making do with what he has and I expect a clear out in the summer when contracts are up.

I wish Jim didnt tweet and just kept his lid shut but then wouldnt we all moan we never heard anything?

He is just doing a job. Our expectation is where it needs to be. Its possibly our patience that is out of kilter with the club.

So I shouldn't expect the truth?

Doesn't change much but it was Phipps that said think Liverpool.

After reading this thread in its entirety ,I can safely say that we are run by a set of back-peddling half-wits

Yes my expectations of us are to be in this position in around top 6/10 of championship but then 12 years of my 1st 13 years supporting utd was in championship, so i dont have that complex like some fans may have from fans who remember that period from 89/90 or 90/91?? to 93/94

but ive always felt sorry for our managers, because theirs are point that sheff utd is the toughest job in 3rd tier & in top5 outside of the premier league. because ive said if any team (bar wigan) gets promoted this season they get a huge round of applause & congratulations to the manager. if we get promoted whoever gets us up will get none of that but still have to deal with some fans are unhappy. ie: if we win playoffs "with our budget, we should have been no where near the playoffs"

The bottom line is, good bad or ugly, no United fan wants to be in this League. At least when we are in the championship there is always the possibility we can join the big boys, but in League One we are just spectators watching other teams play for the real goal - the Premiership. It is just not fun being a fan right now. Time to move up.

Ironically it's the expectation that the owners have consistently talked up... Even in the comments on Jims JTW bullshit he has talked about getting into the PL!

It's the management and owners that talked of being in talks with 6 figure signings... It's the same people that keep wanting to bring in players from two divisions above. It's the same owners that paid £500k for Sharp and £2m for Brayford.

The same owners talked up (before Spurs home last season) that we want to be in cup semis every season, selling out week in week out

It's the exact same owners who've not delivered either managers or players to achieve the targets that they set 3 seasons back

From where I'm sat, the expectation has been piled high and fueled by a Saudi, a Turk and a yank... We've just sat here and watched as they failed to light the fucker in the pouring rain!

Excellent stuff and you're right. (you missed out 'game-changing investment' :D)

The cast in this miserable drama are:

The players. Patently too many are not up to getting United out of this division.
The manager(s). Even if we do ever go up, would NA consolidate us at a higher level? Past performance is no indication of future success. Look at Carvalhal.
The board. Here, we've been serially let down. Dodgy characters such as Charles Green, Trevor Birch et al have darkened our doors. McCabe is certainly no judge of character as can be seen with a lot of his appointments - including managers. Would McCabe perform as a PL chairman? I seriously doubt it.
The fans. Beyond reproach. We are currently averaging 19,998 at home - up on the last three seasons. We've played our part - the rest haven't.

to be fair , be hard pushed to find a chairman starting hes happy wallowing in league one and feels apathetic towards progression in any form

As I have said before, not that it means anything, but the current board, manager and players are just the current custodians of the position they hold, the fans/supporters are there for life.

I don't doubt that McCabe and The Prince want to get promoted, as does Nigel Adkins and the team, and if they ever got to the Premiership then the riches from being a member of that exclusive club are eye watering to say the least.

The thing is, sometimes you have to take a leap of faith, and gamble on promotion.

What would it have taken to buy in the required number of players needed to build a team to scare the crap out of League 1 and guarantee not only a top 6 finish but an odds on chance of us coming out of Wembley smiling for once! (that 3 hour journey back, in silence, everyone depressed, I have had enough of it).

2 million quid maybe? Four good players at £500k each? So a million quid apiece for the Prince and KM.

4 Million quid? Four good players at £1M each?

It's easy to sit here and speculate as none of us are putting that amount of cash in ourselves. But to me, the rewards of being in the Championship (5k extra on the gate for starters) would be worth a risk.

So as to the thread topic, the expectations of United fans, I expect the following:-

- The team to give 100% every game. Nothing less.

- The Manager to pick the best team from the available squad, not having a "his name is first on the team sheet no matter what" mentality. If someone is good enough, play them, if not, drop them to the bench.

- The board to have a word with themselves. League 1 is poor this season, we have to finish in that top six and get out by any means possible. If that means pushing the boat out on loans (our only option it seems) then do it!!!

I can't imagine not being at BDTBL on a Saturday, so no matter what, it is a season ticket for me and the missus again next season, as always, come what may, but (as I have said on other threads, and no disrespect to the teams) I am sick of going to Oldham, Rochdale, Scunthorpe, etc., Had enough, time to get promoted and get on with it in the league above.
