They may well have been, but claiming "We've had money for the past 3 transfer windows and spent...........nothing." is a little unfair to the club.
Yes, he's at the St George's Centre or whatever it's called.I will concede the Dan Ashworth model at West Brom, it served them very well for a time, and he has now moved on to work for the FA, I believe.
Manchester City? Having owners who are dollar trillionaires and being able to lure managers with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich on their CV's will perhaps help?
Cue alcoblade with his Dooley tale in 5..4..3..I think that is the point I was making. Dooley retired, if I recall, around April 2006, as we had been promoted to the top flight. Dooley was in the board room - mostly - between 99-06. He was not, from 06/07 onwards, and of course this is when the decline set in, with the post - Tevez decision making that has culminated in 6 consecutive seasons in Division Three.
Didn't we have Julian Winter and Trevor Birch on the Payroll, both ex-footballers
They certainly knew where the money was ............................
3rd division club with a director of football .... crackers

The main reason Pep has gone to Man City is because they employed the chief exec and DoF from Barca. It's been a long term plan. He could have gone to a number of wealthy clubs but having Bigiristan and the other guy at City swung it.
Again, he could have got that at other clubs.Aye, that and the £15m annual salary.
I don't think JP gets any salary.According to Jim's statement, the lack of signings weren't resource related, so there's money available.
Unless he wasn't telling the truth?
For me, he could also take Jim's wage.
My problem is not with the role as such, it's more why it can't be done by others already there. If they are that incompetent, sack them.Yes a couple of you have pointed this out so I stand corrected on that.
Wouldn't be that much of a salary though surely?
I've never been convinced about this role, if a club needs one it means that either the manager (and his team) doesn't know what he's doing (or can't be trusted) or there isn't sufficient football nous on the Board. Both of course could be true but there should be enough 'football' people at the club for this not to be required.
Is this the answer to all of our problems? If not, what else needs to be done and how? I've got my ideas and it isn't a dig in any way, just interested in your view for the way forward on the whole and not necessarily in individual areas. I think that's what needs to be discussed the most. It's been suggested (by others) previously that we could do with a Director of Football.
Someone to act between manager and board that isn't Phipps and that has an idea about football.
Someone to advise on stopping the mistakes Clough apparently made that seem to have set the club back 2 seasons.
Clearly we have a complete lack of footballing common sense, knowledge or nouse at the top, so is it time to bring someone in who has these skills?
Not someone that leaves when a manager leaves, but has a long term role at the club, can advise on transfer, targets, other leagues etc.
Abs before anyone says Warnock, I'd suggest cutting ties with the past, and aiming for someone well respected in the game.
Suggestions?
I can't see that having someone in this role would have made any difference regarding what's happened (or hasn't happened) in this last transfer window - wether it's clubs asking too much cos of our apparent finances, or an unwillingness to spend by the board, or whatever the real reason is that we haven't strengthened despite being led to believe earlier in the season that we would.

Maybe a DoF would have stopped Clough blowing the budget and stopped the bloody board from letting him?
My main worry is that joint ownership will never work (and is causing major internal issues already) but I don't see how this will ever change?
And that's it. I've got my own dislike of the manager and he's contributed a lot to where we are this season but there's absolutely nothing anyone can do about anything much really. Protest "walk-out's" at matches and a dip in season tickets is about the limit of any of the fans ability to change anything. Walk-outs have already been dismissed by a lot on here anyway though so it looks like they'll be unlikely for starters. My main worry is that joint ownership will never work (and is causing major internal issues already) but I don't see how this will ever change?
Agreed, but my teenage son would have done that for £15k a year.Maybe a DoF would have stopped Clough blowing the budget and stopped the bloody board from letting him?
It's amazing what spending £50,000,000 can do for youGlenn Roeder.
Well, he's available. And the last club he was at seem to be heading very much in the right direction after his input...
Yes that's the sort of person I'd be looking for, although maybe a bit older?
That sort of figurehead though.
I'd rather have someone with a bit more experience. Someone who's actually been a DoF before or an ex manager who isn't keen to get back into the managerial day to day.I think his age might be of benefit, he's untainted by any regime or bad habits. Fresh perspective based on the modern game.
What he did in Norway shows that he knows the importance of stability and moving a club forward.

I think his official title was Chairman but I suspect his role was similar in that his job was to look after the 'football' side of it.Did Niall Quinn have a similar role at Sunderland? Not a suggestion, was just thinking of other examples.
