Rob Staton: Is the Jamie Murphy money going to be reinvested in the squad, but if you're making six figure bids are you quite happy with the backing you're getting?

Positive Nigel: There is a strong desire and there is a genuine support across the football club - we have to balance books accordingly, everyone's aware of that, There's been a lot of money invested over the last couple of years I think that's strong to say [...] there was a lot of money for John Brayford, there was a lot of money for Matty Done [...] so there's been money invested over the time [...] there's a wage bill that adds up when you've got so many players so within FFP you've got to get that right but you've got to be kicking on and pushing the boundaries as much as possible. That's certainly what I'm looking to go and do. Likewise we've got to make sure the people that we bring in have to be in the team kicking ourselves on [...] I don't need to bring someone in just for the sake of it [...] should be who can come in and make a difference and help the group, help our football club get us where we want to be and that's promoted this season.

Rob Staton does what he does well and asks a straight and (fairly) simple question. It's about 8:50.

Posted the response pretty much verbatim.

As in, an honest answer to a genuine question?
No, as in, an answer saying we won't be reinvesting the money because of the amount we've wasted signing too many players on unnecessarily high wages for the division they're in.

I don't need to bring someone in just for the sake of it

Different bit of the interview I think (probably on the exits before) but I was interested by the insinuation that this is exactly the type of attitude that's led to the imbalanced squad we currently have. Notably in the same conversation where Freeman is also mentioned. A few still say "why did we sign Brayford when we needed a centre-half?". I think the more important question is "why did we sign Freeman when we were signing Brayford and when we already had 3 players at the club that played that position?"

Cos Nigel Clough wanted to basically.

Clough and Brannigan, hey what a team they were! Financial and football wiz kids.

Some folk are still slagging the Brayford signing off saying it's a waste of 1.5m.

I say if we have the dosh then keep signing players at 1.5m as long as they have the quality that Brayford has.

We are building for the future and not just for the present so the Jamie Murphy money should be buying quality again. Quality doesn't come cheap.

I want a team full of Brayfords, Dones and Sharps! :)

There was another part of the interview where he says the money and the backing is there.
So in theory there is no excuse then for us not to sign atleast 1 good player to help to propel us into the playoffs. It's all down to you Mr Adkins, hopefully your scouts won't let you down.

What happened to the Harry McGuire money? It seems to have been airbrushed away, a bit like him.

So the Murphy money has already gone on wages, then.
When signing Sharp, Sammon and Woolford from the league above, of course it has.

And despite it being common knowledge for months that it's been swallowed up by wages - and we've known who's fault that was since preseason - and losses, some have to don sackcloth and ashes and weep and wail yet again. Usually those who predict it ad nauseum and then are the most surprised when it rears its head.

Some reyt drama queens on here.

Sounds like from all the messages above that we're all a bit cheesed off, seeing another transfer window enfold like all the other ones before. I'm not even hopeful we're going to sign this year's Jon Forte at this rate! In fact, I feel like we should just sign Jon Forte, he'd still improve on Sammon's current output!

Club plant!!!!

It's gone on Belgian biscuits, Sheeps eyes and a few pancakes and maple syrup and the odd kebab. We all know that.

In which case it would have been quite duplicitous of Jim to make a statement that gives the impression we would be spending money on further transfers, no matter how it was carefully worded. In fact the careful wording could give the impression that it was deliberate.
And now Adkins is saying there is money and we're trying to bring players in?

My recollection (which granted isn't water tight) is that he said the funds would be invested in the first team. They have been.

Clough and Brannigan, hey what a team they were! Financial and football wiz kids.

Mal Brannigan was a total disaster. Clough made some bizarre signings but when it came down to it Brannigan failed to land Conor Coady and totally mismanaged the Maguire transfer.

Just to clarify, is that what Adkins said in the interview or is that what you're saying?

Who were the 3 right backs we had before signing Brayford and Freeman? Alcock, Flynn and ??

When Jim flies in from the states, Saudi or where ever for a game (presumably business class as befits a man of his station), I wonder who the expenses are charged to - bog roll Plc or Sheffield United?

Perhaps the Murphy money has been spent on jims jollies.

That's my interpretation – I doubt he'd ever say that in public if he thought it as he's not the type to criticise the old regime directly.

Basham's the other that has played RB in his career.

Loads of contradictions in opinions.

Let's buy top quality players. Problem is many won't come down to league 1 unless you put release clauses in their contracts or offer big almost Championship level wages.

Our fans say....if we're ambitious then we should take risks and spend the cash.

So we splash the cash paying big money on our talisman, catalyst, cult hero and future captain John Brayford, even though at the time many predicted we weren't ambitious enough to seal the Brayford deal.

Many predicted we wouldn't buy Rochdales best player in Matty Done. Many said there was no way we could afford Billy Sharp. Many predicted we'd lose Che Adams "the biggest talent in league 1" and wouldn't be able to negotiate his pay rise. Many said pay him whatever he wants as he's a future England international.

However we now have game changing investment and can make occasional big money signings. Adams has been given a lucrative contract extension.

But now this ambition is forgotten because apparently we've signed the wrong players.

That's a fair point but I won't criticise our club for showing ambition. John Brayford and to a degree Billy Sharp are unbelievable signings at league 1 level.

It's when we stop spending and don't look for better players when I'll complain and question my support.

Also lets be straight being a manager is looking at the bigger picture and keeping everything running on track no matter what.

So of course Adkins will be economical with the truth. He will protect his employers (the board), individual players (Jose Baxter) and protect himself.

Behind closed doors all kinds of things will have happened. Adkins could be disillusioned and finding it a much harder job than he thought. He could be thinking the squad is no where near good enough but he's never going to admit this in public.

When you're a manager (especially in football with social media and radio phone ins) honesty is usually NOT the best policy. You need to consider internal politics and the potential affects of ones words.

There will be contradictions. There is no set way of winning promotion. There are lots of different ways, different formations, different types of recruitment. We all have our own ideas of how it should be done and when it's not done like that it's easy to think it's the 'wrong' way, rather than just a different way.
And we all sometimes confuse philosophy with execution. It's not always that we do the wrong things, sometimes we do the right things but in the wrong way.

.....or we play all the right players, but not necessarily in the right order ;)
