Flynn and Alcock were injured at the time and we’d had to endure McGahey at right back. Something I hope we never see again. Also, we had a big squad, we didn’t want much more in terms of numbers but we wanted some extra quality above and beyond what we had to try to kick us on to the next level. If we made a marquee signing at any of CB, LM or CF(Over 6 foot) of similar quality this January, I’d be more than happy.
I don't think Flynny was but I will look that up, mate. Davies could play there as well, the point still stands that we could've bought a few more players for that price in more pressing positions.

Flynn was injured for a little while. Not sure if he was back by the time Brayford and Freeman were signed. Think he might have been but had been injured over xmas meaning McGahey played RB for a short time and it cost us points for sure. Davies was also injured with a toe problem at the time.

Did we want a few more players with the numbers we had? I think paying more and getting quality in our position is the way forward rather than bringing in more bodies.

My point regarding the above paragraph is that we could've spent the £1.5m we spent on Brayford on other areas of the team. My guess is you can get quality pretty cheap in this league if we hunt about a bit. Brayford is no doubt a quality player to have regarding his attacking abilities alone but I think we should have been more shrewd at that time and got an established CB and perhaps a strong, pacey box to box midfielder. Never mind, that's all gone now, lets see what happens in the next few weeks. Hopefully one or two quality additions to kick us on and keep our mini revival of results going.

Oh well, 18 days, 14 hours and 53 minutes since the window opened and still we have failed to sign anyone. Us and 63 other clubs in the Premier League/Football League as well.

We need new faces to silence the baying mob.

We need some competent, consistent players capable of delivering the goods at L1 level in several key positions which have desperately needed filling for years ...... to silence the discontent among the badly let down, long suffering Blades supporters ;)

Slight rephrasing there .....

FFP means we have to move players on and out before we can bring in any player of note.

If that’s the case, was the attempt at signing Dan Burn last August nothing more than a charade? We made noises about trying to get Burn and Hammond over the line on permanent deals in August but the situation at their clubs preventing it from happening. If your statement is true, that means we could never have signed both even if Fulham had played ball.

Did we have to sell Murphy to keep our wage bill in FFP limits as opposed to it being the player forced move we presented?

I don’t know if your statement is true but IF it is, that would suggest that Jim and co have been a little economical with the truth wouldn’t you say?

The board works in mysterious ways.

IF the above is true ..... it means that the Board have been working in the same way that SUFC Boards have worked for years and are really no different, because it would mean that the supporters have been deliberately and blatantly lied to ............

On the upside..I see P'Boro have sold Conor Washington to QPR.............not just us that sells the family silver in the JTW then!

Certain posters in here will still look away and not click on the link when they see your post

It's not an easy read, but I understand a little more about the rules, regulations, restrictions.
No doubt by the time everyone has an understanding, the rules will have changed in L1/L2 and/or we'll be a Division higher.

Unless somebody has insight into the minute financial dealings of SUFC, then it's all just assumptions and speculations.

We'll just have to wait and see. But I won't be holding any breath.

So, Nigel's "stay in touch until January" quote basically meant that he hopes all our promotion rivals get their best players nicked this month.

I doubt they would have needed to shell out £4 million for a L1 player........then again.....it's QPR........who knows what they stumped up.............

I also managed to read the link explaining the operation of SCMP. If I read things correctly, then a club can spend whatever it wants on transfer fees but the player wages ARE taken into account. My guess is that we are not having the season expected and, as a consequence, the income projections upon which SCMP is predicated are possibly subject to revision...explaining the need to reduce the wage bill before we can bring someone in.

No, my understanding is that any money put into the club by the owners (as an investment; 'equity', as opposed to a loan) is counted towards turnover. The club can spend 60% of its turnover on wages.
So our wage bill is primarily determined by how much the owners wish to invest.

Sorry Bush. Yes you are correct but I deliberately ignored cash injections (as opposed to loans to the club) as I believe none are likely to be forthcoming whilstever we are in L1. I still think that although the club enjoys fantastic support (numbers-wise at least) I believe the bean counters probably budgeted for a higher average attendance and also more matchday income - as a consequence I believe there is added pressure on the club to reduce spending on players wages. I think..................

They can't have expected our gate to be that much bigger surely? And they won't have budgeted for the Man U game.

I suspect bean_counters are overly optimistic....probably budgeted for a 23k average and a run to the semi-final of one of the cup competitions............I am no expert....I am probably wide of the mark...wouldn't be the first time.

I've yet to meet an overly optimistic accountant and I've met a few.

Ha ha.......but how many football accountants do you know !? Let's face it..football is about as far away from reality as it's possible to get without imbibing illegal substances - how else can £250k a WEEK ever possibly be justified...

I agree they can be tedious but just to clear any doubt, we have got rid of players and you obviously need to read, exactly what you are asking others to read into (ffp). We could get players anyway because our board apparently made bids for players towards the end of August, so we can certainly get players in now and this isn't beating the club with a stick, it's facts from what they have told us over recent months.

Assombalonga?

If the rumours are true about Che Adams (Man City speculative £3M bid, prompting Southampton and Bournemouth to come to the table) then you could imagine that his price will rise to £4M or higher.

Not saying the runours are true, but if a club comes in high, then the price is only going to get higher if three clubs are in a bidding war.

Sell Adams for £4M and hey presto! buy four good players for £1M each, job done! ;)

Or ...... being a cynical old bas**rd like I am ....

Sell Adams for £4million ( undisclosed more likely )
and incoming transfer policy continues to be :tumbleweed: " we tried so hard to get the three deals over the line but ....... "

Nonsense. There are easy ways round it in league one. If that is our excuse (and I'm sure it won't be) it's a poor one.

Transfer fees in and out are counted towards turnover/SCMP.

I asked the football league a couple of years ago

"
I realise you will all be very busy but wonder if you could clarify a point raging on my teams football forum regarding SCMP. Do transfer fees receiveable count towards the qualifying turnover used for the current 60% limit on player wages?

I have looked at the site but can't seem to find anything."

This was the reply

"
Thank you for your email.

Yes - Net transfer fees on a cash basis do.

Thank you for contacting The Football League.

Also, if the financial bods doing the projections were counting on an average gate of 23k this season it's no wonder we're still losing millions each year. Not surprising HRH wants to know where his money's gone.

I understand the projections are replaced by actuals on a regular basis so spending can be monitored. Therefore the projections are updated regularly. Clubs tend not to factor in cup runs, for obvious reasons.

If Che Adams does get sold in this window. It will obviously be in the last minute of the last hour on the last day. Thus giving the suits the perfect excuse to trouser the proceeds of the deal.
