Not a Blades thread but as football fans you may be interested.

Goal is the official film of the 1966 World Cup. The superb camerawork and minimalist, incisive commentary make this an absolute masterpiece IMO.

And a story with a happy ending.

If you have never seen it, give it a try.

Seen it before, can't give it more than 6 out of 10.

Why they shot it on clockwork cameras with the fake crowd soundtrack added latter I never understood, the ridiculous silence where Hurst hits the bar and the ball comes down, clearly been edited by some theatre lovey who had never attended a football match in their lives.

Rant over.

I can well remember being taken by my Dad , as an 8-year old , to a cinema on the Wicker - the ABC I think , to see this fantastic film. It was just enchanting - the first time I had seen a football match IN COLOUR (only B&W TVs in those days and ours had a 10" screen). I seem to remember it started with the the groundsman at Wembley opening up a gate at the iconic 43-year old stadium to get things ready for the big match..........the biggest match !
I have scoured the internet for a copy of this film on DVD but my searches always come up with some daft thing about a South American kid arriving in Geordieland.
If anyone knows where I can get a copy , please let me know.
I saw it only once , 50 years ago , but it's the best - no question !

Despite featuring those Wet Sham players who made the Irons the permanent darlings of the FA , which had dire consequences for us Blades in 2007.

In the Wicker it would have been Studio 7 KB. ABC was on Angel Street.

In the 80s- Studio 5 6 7 on the wicker used to do 12 hour porn marathons- £1.50 with a dole card or a pension book

I used to pass that cinema on the 52 bus into town and wonder what exotic/erotic delights lay behind such film titles as "Come play with me"
