Because I don't want a coach at our club whose (self-proclaimed) 'football' philosophy is "Nowt Fancy - Like Bassett". He ought to have been thrown out just for saying it.

Only in S2.....
Aye I'm with you. It's a good job the current tippy tappy crab football has worked.

Seems to be working well with the kids coming through....

I refer you to the final paragraph of my previous contribution, augmented by the views and practices of the rest of the footballing world, beyond the S2 hills.

For years highly respected players and managers have referred to playing the game "the right way". I can assure you they are not thinking of Dinosaur Dave or Muckanettles Morgan.

I am gratefully, however, that you have aligned yourself with the Hoof it and Hope school of thought. At least I know where you stand....eyes raised, right hand flat, level and pressed against the forehead, waiting for the ball to come to Earth...

Meanwhile, in a restadaworld uncontaminated by such nonsense, the points, leagues and trophies continue to be won by teams playing proper football...

I've just seen that Glyn Hodges is in charge of Stokes under 21s, I wouldn't want Morgan to leave (I think we need a fighter more than a tactician) but if he did I'd love us to go in for my childhood hero.

I do love how you patronise on how football should be played.

I don't know what you have seen from Morgan, hence the question on why you'd be so quick to let him go, but from what i can see above, its one throw away comment (not sure whether it was a direct quote or the context of what he has said). However, with several youngsters coming through over the last few years i'd be looking for a more substantive justification to allow him to leave.

As for your little rant on how the game, Of course, I never mentioned anything about playing 'Hoof', whatever that may be. Personally I think that the 'Nowt fancy' way of playing is the way forward. We've spent too long trying to overthink and complicate things this season, however when we've shown a willingness to pass the ball forward over the years, it can prove to be effective.

There is and always has been more than one way to play football. I believe the 'restadaworld' except your good self knows this

The beautiful game, S2 style....

Forget pass and move. Gerritforrard.

I can't imagine why clubs are not fighting in the Lane car park to secure the services of old Muckanettles or, indeed, why Dinosaur Dave is unemployable except when we feel the need to embarrass ourselves in the course of an interview process.

Adkins is a football man. His four promotion winning teams all played the game properly. He should have like thinking people around him, not be required to have a relic of a bygone age foisted on him simply because he's called Morgs and the least sophisticated fans in the world like him.

Does anyone seriously think NA would employ Morgan if he wasn't already here?.... Why would he? Nobody else wants to.

Incidentally, we played our best football of the season for half an hour on Saturday. It was pass and move all the way. Proper football; the sort successful teams play. For those of you who prefer pub league stuff, it's available every Sunday morning at a recreation ground near you.

The u18 and u21 teams are meant to allow progression from youth levels to first team. It's a vital conduit. You think we should ignore technique and simply school them in upanatem?

Good Pele, the madness is truly amongst us....

OK Morgs first and foremost was a stopper he is doing all his badgers so must have serious ambitions to be a top coach.Being a top footballer doesn't mean you will be a top coach.Anybody who watch,s the under 21s will tell you they play really good football with good technical ability ,the Birmingham game was a treat to watch.Hopefully all our coaches are singing from the same hymn sheet and Morgan his playing his part,he is a winner and if he can instill that in the young players all the better.

I really hope not because Morgan os vital at sheff utd because he seen it all came in the warnock era just starting . He seen the lows & highs kmows what utd fans expect. We would be stupid to lose someone who was a great leader with such passion

This makes me sound even worse, but all along I've been thinking Morgs is our number 2, completely forgetting that he is in fact managing the under 21s.
No, kids don't need motivation they need nurturing.

The man is no better than barney.

I'm tempted, but....no....it would be shooting fish in a barrel, wouldn't it?...

Good Pele, there's some wild stuff going on at Shirecliffe, isn't there?

What absolute nonsense. This addresses nothing on Morgan as a coach and is implying that Morgan is incompetent. My question initialy was whether we should be bothered if Morgan left, but rather than back up your comment, you chose to try and discredit him by suggesting that he's not wanted elsewhere, nor by Adkins. None of which you can substantiate. finlaytheblade has done this...

You've also contradicted yourself, on one hand you'd be happy if Wilson took him to Chesterfield (our last decent footballing manager that ultimately failed when faced with the direct and physical approaches of our neighbours) but also state he's unemployable elsewhere. All this ignores the fact that he's never expressed any desire to leave.

We've clearly improved since Adkins has moved the game away from the "pass and move" end of the spectrum and become more physical and direct.

It's clear for all to see. I wouldn't try claiming any argumentative victory on this one Pinchy.

Danny Wilson failed for no other reason than the verdict of a Caernarfon jury. No amount of euphemistic "direct and physical" would have prevented us going up had Ched been available for the run-in.

Of course Muckanettles hasn't expressed any desire to leave. He's nowhere to go! "Nowt Fancy - like Bassett" has, believe it or not" little appeal beyond the foothills of S2! Turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

His opinions and desires are of minimal interest to me. He's a dinosaur. I hereby express my desire for him to leave and be replaced by a coach with a rather more expansive and imaginative outlook than a return to a philosophy long since abandoned by those who know what they are doing and play the right way [that expression courtesy of countless professionals who achieve things, not me]. That includes our manager, who wouldn't have old Nowt Fancy at the club if he wasn't part of the fixtures and fittings.

Morgan is the new Cec Coldwell. Employed as a coach because of economic circumstances rather than merit and now here because he's here because he's here....all he needs to complete the picture is a bucket of water and a magic sponge...

Yet the best period of play we've had all season was pure pass and move. Not a lumpitforrard or getchasinthat in sight.

I'm afraid you pub football aficionados are going to have to retreat into your S2 caves as we begin (yes, it takes time to repair decades of damage inflicted since our greatest manager, the late John Hariis) to see what a footballing manager of genuine quality can achieve with our great club. I shall, Pele willing, be here to enjoy it. For diehard hoofers there is, as I have said, a recreation ground near you....

You can do better than that Pinchy. Build as many straw men as you like, you have been proven comprehensively wrong over 5 years. You've disappeared off the forum as your argument on this point has become so weak. It's a bit rich to turn up after a few wins and start claiming that you're being proved right.

Football can be played in so many ways. Our manager knows it and has just demonstrated it. Your failure to grasp this is why you have to use this straw man argument again and again.

The records show that we lost in the play off final, the league table and the play off final result don't mention us losing these both on the basis of a player that didn't play the last few games of the season, however, your comment further proves that if Morgan were to be snapped up by Danny Wilson, that perhaps some people in the footballing world don't see Morgs as a dinosaur. Ched was a major factor, but we can't say for certain that he'd have taken us up. We can say that we were beaten by three sides, two of which preferred direct and physical to tippy and tappy.

And yet there you go again, banging on about dinosaurs, a particular type of football and yet you can't comment on how Morgan actually gets his sides to play. Have you ever actually seen the U21's play? I haven't other than the live game on Youtube last year, I only have the brief spells when he was caretaker manager of the first team to go on. The time he had was too short to make an informed opinion of the U21's as they are completely different circumstances and remits.

I just wondered, with your strong opinions on him, whether you had anything to base your opinion on. You clearly don't, you just don't like him. And thats ok. I don't like Collins, but i don't dress my opinion up into some sort of fantasy novel. I'm guessing that because Collins played in a side that got a decent result and played well the other day that you're fine with him though.

Proper football both entertains and wins trophies. Hoof and Hope fails dismally on both counts.

There are indeed many ways to play football. By far the ugliest and most discredited can be seen in a documentary called The Crazy Gang. It attempted to bring the world of pub football to the professional game and worked for a very short time until the novelty wore off and proper footballers and coaches came to terms with it and learned how to combat it effectively. No-one who understands the game would dream of now utilising such rudimentary nonsense. Wimbledon are defunct and pub players now play in a park on a Sunday morning in front of two men [One called Swiss; One called Alco] and a dog. Dinosaur Dave, John Beck, Charles Hughes and more recent throwback Semipro are rightly unemployable. Meanwhile Barca continue to sweep all before them and Arsenal sit top of the pile at home.

The rest of the world understands this. They take note of the teams that actually win things and how they play. Then there is S2, clinging on to failed, discredited, discarded ugliness for grim death.

Nowt Fancy - Like Bassett. What better epitaph could one hope for?....

...

Which is why nobody is calling for it. It's the classic straw man.

If you hadn't conceded defeat when you disappeared a few months ago, you'd have been around to see people (including me) calling for us to be more robust. You'd have been throwing out the usual insults about cavemen, and then you'd have witnessed the team become more robust, and start winning games. You'd have been wrong, again.

It's a bit obvious what you do Pinchy. You've lost the argument in a first round knock out. So you keep creating this straw man to knock down.

I want Collins replaced at the first opportunity! I believe NA agrees and will, if possible, do just that within the next month.

Morgan is on record as expressing his managerial philosophy in the terms I have repeated. It was at an event hosted, I think, by our very own forum and recorded contemporaneously by the estimable Foxy or Linz or both. I don't doubt they got it right; they usually do. That philosophy is, whether it worked at the time or not, now outdated and discredited. It does not reflect the publicly stated way in which our club wishes to go forward. I don't want a coach who 'thinks' in that way anywhere near our club, certainly not instilling such prehistoric claptrap into our youngsters.

In addition, it is commonly believed (not proof, I accept instantly) that Muckanettles had to be instructed, when he first took the job, by a senior figure at The Academy, to stop encouraging the youngsters to hoof it.

There is no evidence at all that Danny Wilson wants him, merely speculation on here. If he does, he is in a minority of one amongst football managers. That said, I sincerely and fervently hope he does want Barnsley's most eminent football philosopher. It's our only chance, unless we are brave enough to horrify football's least sophisticated fans by not renewing his contract, of getting rid of the Hoyland Hoofer.

Kick him long; Kick him high; Kick him out.
