J Wallace

The JW situation has been so frustrating for so long but I'm absolutely sure the person most frustrated about it will be JW himself. I really hope he can come through it and be a success for the Blades. Look at the video of Flynn's second goal in the U21's this week to see what he offers - we don't have another midfielder with the balance of abilities that he has IMO.

So, I finally track you down Herr Paulus, do you still get texts or what?

Ahhh, technology eh? old duffers like me can't be expected to keep up.

We are talking about a human being and a professional footballer dependent on his football wage for his future. We are talking about a professional football manager who has to take into account the best interests of the lad and the club and himself!

The lad has his contract up for renewal before long and the manager could be said to be still trying to establish his own credibility with the owners and the fans.

In addition there are around 40 other individuals in the playing squad, each with their own set of circumstances, including fitness, form, contracts etc.

With long term injuries and repeated set backs, ultimate fitness is always a stretch away. Not until Wallace has a couple of months training and games under his belt will he be able to even think about having a continuing career.

Have a heart fellas.

he admitted in an interview at the start of this season, when all was apparently looking rosy for him, that he had not strung 3 consecutive games together in 3 years! And here we are 4 months on and he still hasn't. Needs to prove he is fit for work or go off on sickness benefit and stop drawing a wage - as would happen in most other jobs.

I can only think that a health care plan ,such as BUPA pick up the tab for injured players and pay out when they are unfit. How many players right now are there wearing out the treatment table and tossing it off? Some should be on a play and pay scheme. That would sort the problem

This is a good point.

Do footballers have sick pay?
I presume they pay their NI contributions and are entitled to statutory sick pay at 88.45 a week. Probably a grey area in that their injuries might be classed as industrial injuries so probably easier for the clubs to just keep paying them their several grand a week for doing nowt.

We are also talking about a footballer who will get a dam good pension from the PFA

Wallace is only 24 LBoE, and like everyone else he wont get his pension till 55 at the earliest. If he were to leave football now I can't see 6 years contributions going an awful long way to a decent pension.

Do footballers have sick pay?

I think they are only paid in line with their contract Fatty i.e their basic pay, which is of course quite decent in everyday terms but no appearance bonus. Then if released he is reliant on getting another contract and given his injury record this is far from certain or at least it will be on poor terms.

A lot of assumptions here Sirius. The club will of course have medical care. I can't imagine that BUPA will cover their salary for times at the club when unfit. The contributions would be prohibitive, if that's what you mean by pay out when they are unfit.

Players tossing it off on the treatment table? Of course you will always get the odd oddball but players want to play don't they. Have you ever heard of a player say, 'yes I was never happier than when I was out injured'?

Pay when you play scheme would sort out the problem? What problem? The problem of players lining up at the sick bay to be given sick notes not to play? They are all on short contracts their performance dictates their next contract and whether they can pay their mortgage or not. Also 'pay when you play'.

Only 11 (plus subs) can play. Are you suggesting that the others, the squad players don't get paid?

He's managed a massive 565 minutes of league football for us in total. And his appearance record has been getting worse - 72 league minutes in 2015/2016.

A total of 81 league minutes in calendar year 2015 (assuming he won't force his way in for the Wigan and Bradford games).

If anyone thinks he is going to be one of the "answers" this season they must be expecting a miraculous recovery of Lazurus proportions.

He'll be on the wage bill until the end of season, no one would take him with that injury record.

I suppose; in the interests of "fairness" we should concede that he's been of no use to the team this year because of injuries.

Its a better excuse than 30 of the other squad members have got for being useless this season !! o_O

Can anyone who still believes that James Wallace will ever play more than the odd 5 or 10 minutes here & there (at best) for us, please download this & use it as their screensaver -

Football is all about hope (and fear) not belief.
