Found an old programme from the second leg at anfield (2003)? and found myself reading through it (as you do) obviously plenty of reminders regarding players and how we had just brought a keeper in as cover called paddy Kenny but as I went through the programme there was a piece about the other semi, man United versus Blackburn who had drawn the first leg 1-1, and there in one of the pictures was one Jay maceverley, with comments such as a young up coming defender with ability on the ball and then, can you believe it, he kept a certain David Beckham quite! I actually dont think he is half as bad as some make out but the line about golden balls still takes some believing,

There's a bit of positive McEveley revisionism going on - though not from everybody by any means.

Someone even had him as MoM last week - and dared to say so, in writing, in public, on this forum. A brave move.

His jockeying and interception when Scunthorpe broke after the Beard's mistake first half were excellent.

I don't want to go too far as he does have his limitations and mad moments, but like all our players he's mixture of good and bad.

James McEveley - Blackburn Rovers

James McEveley may not yet be a household name but the 17-year-old has been an important player for Rovers this season.

The defender made his debut against Walsall in the Worthington Cup in November and has made the left-back spot his own.

McEveley excelled against Beckham at Old Trafford

Liverpool-born McEveley has since played at Goodison Park, Villa Park and Old Trafford as he continues his development.

The Worthington Cup semi-final first-leg tie with Manchester United pitted McEveley against David Beckham, a challenge he relished.

He also made a brilliant goal-line clearance to deny Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in injury time.

He is naturally a central defender but has taken his chance at left-back and has shown an excellent temperament as well as loads of ability.

I realise it's only make believe but he always turned out to be a top player on CM 03/04. The point being that someone (whoever provides the reviews for the game) must have rated him.

I'm still in the minority who think he's a decent player that can play a bit but has seen his form hit by injuries and loss of confidence (no doubt in part due to the constant barracking he's had from his own supporters). Before anyone gets on their high horse about me suggesting 'it's the crowds fault', the point is, it is when you boo individual players - unacceptable.

I think he's shit, but of course I want him to ram those words back down my throat by dispossessing Wayne Rooney on the goal line at the Stretford end before surging out with the ball over half way and then rattling one in off the underside of the bar in front of 10,000 airborne bodies in the away end. I don't know how likely that is though

About as likely as Jamie Vardy being top scorer in the Prem, Leicester being top and Chelsea being in a relegation battle.............

In all seriousness, anything could happen this season.......who knows?

In all fairness he went backwards after Blackburn, he went out on loan a few times as well and stuff.

Let's not forget the lad is lucky to be alive never mind playing football after what happened to him during surgery. For those who don't know, he went in for routine cheek surgery when he was at Derby County and his heart stopped in theatre and stuff which must have been a bit scary for him and will have taken a load of balls to get back on the pitch afterwards.

There is no excuse for his current ability though and he isn't doing the stuff for us which is why he needs moving on.

McEveley was probably a good player, the problem is that he isn't now and that is not hard to work out due to the performances on the pitch.

Aging League One football player in used-to-be-hot-prospect shocker.

Why do I get the feeling he's going to play out of his skin until June and bag a new contract?...

Seeing him up close playing on Saturday as opposed to where we normally sit, he looks shattered of any confindence, he just looks pissed off. Even his body language looks down, this must be affecting his game, and to make matter worse he's supposed to be our leader out there on the pitch, he's our captain ffs! Think he needs a rest. They can't blame the pressure of playing in front of 20,000 although I don't doubt at smaller grounds they can hear a lot of what's shouted.

Having said that I thought McCeverly did some decent things along with the usual scare that usually happens every game.

Like all footballers its a confidence thing
Coming back from such a near death experience , its only human to take things warily.
This lads shown hes capable before and might , thats might come good once hes fully over what he went through.
If he continues improving like he has done in recent games its insane not to see if his rehabilitation bears fruit and we get a former prem defender , fully fit and confident, be better than wasting money , hes got till the end of January to show hes got the ability
We can help by being supportive .

we had a player called Tonge , scored 2 crackers v Liverpool
he had feet like Sideshow Bob

what a prospect he was, is he at Inter Milan now ?

You sound like he's a young player just coming back from this incident. He's been with us 18 months and has been fit for most of that. If anything, he has declined during his time here. He's in his 30s and unlikely to get better.

I don't agree with those who barrack him at matches but he's never going to be anything more than OK on his day and dreadful on a bad day. Should never have had his contract renewed.

I know hes in his thirties
the confidence hes seeking is one of medical recovery
believe it or not but our players are human beings. they get stressed by little things like seeing bright lights at the end of a tunnel
Hes coming back to being able to put it completely out of his system , then if he returns to something like what he was be good for him and us
Theres a massive difference to being fit , and being ready , some of his scars you dont see

It happened over six years ago. If it's been holding him back for the last six years, I can't see him miraculously getting over it and massively improving over the course of the remaining five months of the season. Wishful thinking I reckon.

I generally don't agree with fans getting on players backs and stuff, but I think with J'mc the criticism has been warranted for the most.

Most of us appreciate that we are a league one team with league one players and with this comes a lack of certain qualities however I don;t think we are asking too much for the basics to be done correctly and unfortunately J'mc has been as guilty as anyone of getting them wrong.

I thought everyone loved Jay until the Spurs pen? Then he had a bit of a downturn in form and he's public enemy number one. The loudest detractors forget that they once liked him. It's weird because there was definitely a period this year when if the ball even went near him there were people drawing breath getting ready to hurl abuse. Other players for doing the exact same thing got a clap and a 'try harder next time'.
