Just got goosebumps watching Agana's equaliser. I agree with so many other comments on here about that game. Despite the defeat, it remains one of my favourite United moments. In fact, the whole cup run that year was fantastic, though some of my 'memries' are a bit hazy:
1st round: Doncaster away. 3-1 win (I think). Originally Deane wasn't going to play because the game was on a Sunday and he wanted to go to church. Eventually he decided that it was God's will that he played (and, of course, he scored).
2nd round: Mansfield away. 1-1 draw. I think this was the game where Simon Webster broke his leg. I think our goal was Deane again, with a lovely juggle with his back to goal before turning and firing into the bottom corner.
2nd round replay: Mansfield home. 2-1. Was this the Tony Kenworthy own goal, or was that in the league?
3rd round: Huddersfield away. We'd lost 3-2 in the league earlier that season. This time we came out on top, courtesy of a sublime Tony Agana goal (top corner from the corner of the penalty area).
4th round: Colchester home. 3-3 draw against a team struggling a division below us. Improbably, Colin Hill scored two for Colchester (before we went on to sign him).
4th round replay: Colchester away. 2-0. I think that Deano got both goals. I remember Agana hitting the upright and the ball leaving a muddy mark on the post. This match is the only time that I've ever touched the match ball (I got a hand to it when someone kicked it out for a throw-in). Funny what you remember when it comes to football.
5th round: Norwich away. Lost 3-2, but we gained a lot of respect and it was the first time that we realised that Deane and Agana were more than just 'good' third tier players.
