I hitch-hiked from Hull for this game..............not as easy as it might seem !!!! Pride in abundance that day..................days like that are why I will ALWAYS be a Blade !!!! Keep the Faith my friends.........................Strength through Adversity !!!! UTB !!!

Brief highlights here.

Lets get behind the lads next week and progress to the 3rd round.

Cups used to mean something in them days
have to mean something now as only 4 maybe 5 clubs can afford to win the title
Arsenal have been keen to win it lately

Ive posted before I remember this game more for nearly fainting in the crush when we scored as theyd packed far too many of us in a tiny caged pen,

We were in the 3rd tier and it was the 5th round.

Funnily enough that cup run was surpassed by Clough twice in the past two years, yet he was deemed surplus to requirements by you and those that run the club.

Bassett got us promoted the same season. Clough didn't.

That was United's first appearance in the 5th round for 21 years. You hear a lot about how marvellous the early 1970's team were, but their cup record was wretched.

That match was one of my 1st away games and as such is burned into my memory! I remember a pissed up Blade shaking my hand and welcoming me into the ground, an inflatable blow up doll called Betty Blade being 'ahem' carried about by some fella on crutches, one of which was firmly inserted into one of her 3 working orifices. I also recall passing a bad car accident on the way down, and learning later on it was a group of Blades who, fortunately all walked away. I remember 90 minutes wall to wall singing and a never say die attitude. There was a chorus of 'What's it like to be outclassed' towards the end despite it being clear we were going to lose the match at that point. After the 2nd goal I was stood on my chair and got my leg trapped down the back, took about 3 Blades to pull me out. Cracking away day despite the result.

I call this match my "Favourite away defeat" simply because of the Blades performance that day (given the two divisions between us) And the thousands of us crammed in the corner giving the lads a tremendous backing. Set off pretty early for the match with some tinnies on the way down, popped into a boozer near the ground and was half cut by kick off. The highlights don't give the Blades much credit in my opinion but maybe I'm a bit biased ! There was no disgrace in defeat that day.

Got back to the local after the long drive back on the bus and carried on drinking till the small hours. I remember walking home in a zig zag singing Tony, Tony Agana .....

If ever someone says there ought to be a terraced section in grounds where fans could sing, I think of the noise we created during that match and how it must have sounded to the players on the pitch.

A fucking cracking day out !!!

I prob remember more about the trip over there. Mate had a Peugot 205 GT black and red and he drove to the match. It was a hairy journey but nothing as dramatic as Sitwell experienced. Good atmosphere, we acquitted ourselves well but were outclassed.
Just showed we could compete. Deane and Agana were terrific. What a pair they were. Top strikers.
Totally agree!

looking back you have to was marvelous having the Deane Agana front line
you always thought, nay. knew we could score, the expectation was nearly always met , 1 in 2 games at least

They were outstanding, plucked from obscurity for nothing £30k for BD & not much more for TA - they then rampaged through Div1, Championship & played in the Prem.

How we could do with them or equivalents now

One I partucuarly enjoyed was a late late Deane header in our first away game back in the top division at the baseball ground, it got us a point we richly deserved

Such an excitement about everything the pair of them did. Both gentlemen of the game too, played the game in the right spirit.

I used to enjoy my football in those days, so exciting under Dave Bassett
Can never forget that game as someone said earlier we were packed in like sardines.
We scored and all hell let loose round us and I got a knee in my back and went down in a heap.
My daughter thought I had a heart attack and called for assistance.
The next thing we were being led down the steps and out on the pitch for some time.
When the first aid folk thought I was ok we were put in the crowd at the front and got a better view.

Watching the video of the goals was exciting to watch never mind be at games.
Where has all that excitement gone to now, the game seems so much different and we are still stuck in this sodding division with second rate players.

If only the good days would come back.
Wishful thinking on my part, we are light years away.

we were light years away when we were in division 4 in1981 but got back to the top flight 8 years later
the beauty of football is it can change , and pretty rapidly if you get on a roll, just need that push to get rolling

You need players who play with pride
Pride in themselves and the shirt they play for
Been looking for signs of this for a while
Not seen it yet

that comes with winning , they always seem to be trying harder when you win
all pros play for money its a job

if we win 4 or 5 in a row their pride will seem a lot higher

only fans care for the shirt

kissing the badge comes from getting agoal scoring bonus , not love of the club

I can only assume that from reading your post it is obvious why you are so happy to eat the shit served up to you every week by our players

I expect it to get better as players return to full fitness
missed half the team most of the season through injuries
weve played some stinkers yes but the tide will turn
sure as day follows night

You kept saying the same bullshit last season

Listened to it on the radio with earphones in - went bonkers with 1 goal in John Lewis from memory - caused a few turned heads.
