This is a real question, and i know you don't need to break the bank to sign good players, you just need to find the right players, but its January, no club in any league will want to sell their better players, so realistically how much money are we going to need to spend in January?

The positions i think we need..

A new striker
A new Center back (maybe two?)

On the back of that i can think of about 5-6 players who could be sold in January too..

Scougall
Coutts
Woolford
Flynn
Alcock
McEveley
Cuvelier

Not sure really, couple of million, maybe ?

We really need the prince to step up and spend some of that game changing investment, but the manager needs to make sure its spent on the right kind of players , its not always about the amount , its also about getting the right kind of player as stated in the op, eg. Leon Clarke was a much better option the Connor Sammon , but that's just my humble opinion , as ever UTB !

It's not about money, the priority is on:

- players that can do a job from their first game.
- a player that can lead as captain and ruffle a few feathers - both for the opposition, but also within our squad.
- pace
- power

Regardless of positions we need to fulfil the above criteria - either with one player for then lot or a number of players

We don't need anymore strikers, we need someone to keep the following players out of the side:
JCR
Collins
Hammond

Achieve the above and we'll finish top 10 at least

How much will the eventual promotion winning teams be spending?

A fraction of the amount we'll spend, that's almost guaranteed.

Unfortunately, particularly under this clueless manager, the hope for succinct and clever recruitment really isn't a prospect worth considering with any sort of seriousness.

Another stinky turd of a thread. How much do we need to spend? You may as well ask how long a piece of string is. The right players could be available at any sort of price for one thing and secondly we won't get them. We never do.

Last but most certainly not least....who in their right mind is going to buy that lot from us? I've said it already but the standard of chat on here currently is about on par with the team's performances.

Tragic.

It's bad enough that the spine of our team is still inadequate, but when you consider that JCR is still our best winger it just makes you realise the size of the rebuilding task ahead.

We're at the very least a goalkeeper, a centre half, a central midfielder, a centre forward and a winger from being a half decent team.

This sounds crazy but we have the expensive type players already.
Goalscorer's cost a few quid and we've got a couple, creative midfielders, tricky wingers, exciting young players etc.
What we do need are players that usually cost less.
I think we could get a premiership third choice keeper on a season long loan.
A commanding leader in midfield could be quite cheap- Hammond isn't costing us too much, he's not what we need at the minuet but he's supposed to be just that.
Finally(in my eyes) a solid center half, I don't know Burn very well but if he's the player Nigel wants then I can't see him breaking the bank either.
So a youngster from Fulham, a loan and a midfielder maybe from the championship. It's not going to cost us much more than 1million in my eyes.

We wouldn't have to spend that much. For me they require 3 solid, League 1, players straight down the spine of the team. Was talking to a Wednesdayite mate last night about our short comings at centre half (lack of big f***er that wins everything), who made the point that when they went up they had Rob Jones who did just that (he also did the same with Donny and Scunthorpe in their promotion seasons). He's not good enough at the higher division but once he's got you up you bin him off.

It's not a difficult equation to get out of this division, we need someone like Jones at centre half and equivalents in centre mid and target man. The squad has enough quality for a higher division, they proved that numerous times in the cup in the last two seasons, what they lack is steel, which should be the starting point for any team looking at going up.

We have to get some of the crap of the books first so I think most recruitment will come during the summer

Even then it's not going to be big money they have made that clear, we are going to have to build and spend wisely., and NOT sell our better players.

That is the big question.

The problem is that managers have been financially supported and we've still struggled.
We have the biggest squad and apart from Wigan and probably Millwall the biggest wage bill too.

So it looks like being a case of how many we can sell or loan out first.
And that part is out of our control.

I suspect we'll be looking for short term loans form the PL or championship.
They have a low financial risk but it's sometimes pot luck regards how well the new players play.

Romaine Sawyers should be one of the signings we make. Does not panic on the ball at all, great composure and ability to float around find space and pick players out with accurate passes rather than hopeless percentage balls that we resort to too often.

Here's to another season in League One...

I'm not holding my breath about a successful summer of recruitment, the past two summers (and JTW's for that matter) have proven we're incompetent.

If we spend a single penny in January then we are more stupid than I ever even realised

The only circumstance it wouldn't be completely stupid is if we pay off at least 25 first.

That said, any signings made by Adkins are going to come with a substantial risk of stupidity.

We shouldn't spend anything.

Some, me included have mentioned the word "Charlton" weeks ago.

That is where we are heading.

The performances don't lie - the league position is not far off correct.

We are now seeing the effect of getting rid of Clough and we are suffering accordingly as Adkins cannot adapt these players to how he wants them to play.

We all know it makes sense - we just don't want to accept it. I don't want to accept it, but as each week goes on, it becomes more of a reality.

UTB

It's so obvious where we are lacking. We at least need a solid centre back and a powerhouse in midfield, preferably someone similar to Chuks Aneke when he was at Crewe. A couple of tricky wingers with pace and power like Adams wouldn't go a miss either.

No idea how much it would cost however.

Normal clubs seem to get them for next to nothing on loan deals. Maybe one day we'll actually wake up and try it.

If anyone thinks we can sort out this mess in one or even two transfer windows then they are deluded.

Five more years.

At the start of last season we needed to keep together a team that finished strongly in 7th and got to an fa cup final, sign coady Brayford and a striker and it should have played out nicely, however due to the short sighted nature of the board we bough barrel loads on loss of shit.

Those same short sighted people are still at the club.

I don't Think I really really matter because by January it will be too late and also cards on the ta me this season we haven't done enough from board through to fans. We just expected to turn up again and walk this thing. We don't deserve anything to this point.

I think far too many of our fans our chucking the towel in far too early. We're in League 1, not Champions League, Premier League or even the Championship, we're in the 3rd tier and it's not brilliant. Adkins gets the right players in (steel right down the spine) in January and its easy enough to batter this division. There's plenty of quality in the squad - Adams, Done, JCR, Sharp, Baxter, Reed, Scougall, Brayford even Sammon and Coutts - they just need someone to do the spade work for them.

If the players aren't ready to be signed within the 1st week of the window (which they won't be) then we shouldn't bother at all....

I would rather Adkins spent the window stamping his authority in the club by getting rid of those players who obviously either a) just want to pick up a wage b) signed for Clough and not SUFC

You can't be everyone's mate and actions speak louder than words... I'm willing to see how ruthless he will be before judging him... The nicely nice approach hasn't worked.

Coventry have used the loan market brilliantly some great signings all of them was what we needed ie Turner a solid centre half ,Armstrong say no more Billigarama a very combatative midfielder and that winger from Norwich Murphy ..Although its not May yet Blades and with Brayford and Edgar back soon then the defence will be better and we hopefully can go on and nick a few wins before christmas but maybe i'm been stupid and me heart is ruling my head .
