How much do we need to spend in January?

Fact: 90% certain the Board did not intend to sack Clough and then there was some sort of "bust up" (probably about scouting and player signings record)

Fact?: We did well to attract Adkins to the club. Yes?

Fact: The appointment of the manager in June was very late in the summer and not ideal in so many ways.

Fact: When the manager for over two years is sacked all of a sudden then any continuity is lost.

Fact: Adkins had to assess the quality of a bloated squad before shipping players out.

Fact: Adkins "honeymoon period" lasted all pre-season and was lost at Gillingham in the first league game.

Fact: All Adkins 5 signings have been disappointing and 3 rarely feature. ( Even Sharp has not scored enough goals in open play)

Fact: We can still gain promotion probably through the play-offs. Indeed we can still gain automatic promotion.

Fact: If we are promoted from this position we are due for an exceptional few months.

Opinion: Any new manager be given at least a year to show his mettle.

More concerned about who we can get rid of rather than who we bring in. Need to get rid of at least 6 or 7 before we even think about bloating the squad again.

There appears to be an increasing reconcilliation to the idea that we write this season off so we can get rid of all the deadweights who's contracts all expire in the Summer and we can come back stronger next year.

If that is the plan do we think said cast offs will be putting more (no) or less (yes) effort in for the rest of the season? We have to do enough in January so that as few as possible of them get any first team football to ensure we don't get dragged too far down the table.

Yes we need to strengthen certainly defensively, but is spending huge amounts of money nesserary because look at current top 6 (Excluding Wigan). 5 of them Burton Bury Coventry Gillingham & Walsall id guess they run on 1/2 or maybe even less than 1/2 of our budget.

So maybe lets look at defenders coming up than coming down in L2 or conference because look at our better players at moment done (although he's off boil now) baxter & adams have all come from lower down with something to prove. I know there was good things coming about Bristol rovers Cb who was their player of season

That is my worry. At the moment we are mid table and looking nowhere near promotion material but should not get sucked into a battle at the other end. However, I look at Swindon and Barnsley and things can quickly spiral other way.

I certainly don't want to write this season off yet but I do not feel they are good enough to even get in the top 6. Keep hearing there is no way Walsall, Bury, Gillingham will finish above us. Well that was said 2 months ago and most of these teams have moved further away from us in points! These players have no sense of urgency and do not seem capable of knuckling down and going on a run. They just turn up and what happens, happens. There is very much a 'going through the motions' type performances. If we were nowhere near top 6 come say March and clear of the bottom; the board then should start blooding kids and planning for next season. However for us to even consider this at this stage is daft. We need to somehow hope Adkins can galvanise these tossers into a run and get back up the league.

Its not so much fees
Might get some cogs in on frees

I say cogs as cogs that will fit our engine rather than the toothless cogs we ve got
We might pay 1m for a center half and find a midfielder who suits our play on a free

What we need is 2 bits of quality , one a verbal leader who is not averse to crunch tackles
and a Burn or similar
If we can keep people occupied up the other end , giving our front better service we wont need a new keeper

The poor little darlings it's so unfair. They can have all the bullies and minders they want, it won't magic talent which as in 95% of cases is the real reason for poor results.

First we just needed Collins back, then we just needed that striker, then we just needed that midfielder, now we need some enforcers. What will we need after that doesn't work?

That myth about getting bullied in the third division always makes me laugh as well. Perhaps that was the case in the 1990's. Players get a lot more bullied out in the Championship and Premier League where players are generally fitter, stronger and more athletic. Someone only has to score from a set piece in this division to qualify as physical. Pathetic excuses.

I'm not making excuses for 'um, the majority of the games for the last 18 months when United have come up against teams that want to get stuck in, then United get bullied out of it. There's not enough players with the bollocks to stick up for themselves. There's plenty of quality in the team, they've proved that over the last 2 seasons against teams from higher divisions who rely on skill over brute force - Villa, Fulham, Forest, Charlton, West Ham, Southampton, QPR and they weren't that far off against Spurs and Hull. Just like they've proved there isn't enough steel in the team when they've come unstuck against the cloggers in league 1.

Quality is fine in the squad, United's problem is there isn't enough players/big f***ers that will get stuck in.

Keep sticking to your opinion of a 1970/80s stereotypical league 1 if it makes excuses easier.

That's not how the majority of teams play though.

Does anyone genuinely think we'll get any business done in Jan?

At best we'll sign some useless fucker in the last week of the window

Looking at what clubs like Wolves, Charlton, Bournemouth spent to gain promotion from this division we need to spend about 5 million

I think we should spend whatever it is required to get the full Coventry team in, a piece of piss isn't it:rolleyes:

This is a real question, and i know you don't need to break the bank to sign good players, you just need to find the right players, but its January, no club in any league will want to sell their better players, so realistically how much money are we going to need to spend in January?

The positions i think we need..

A new striker
A new Center back (maybe two?)

On the back of that i can think of about 5-6 players who could be sold in January too..

Scougall
Coutts
Woolford
Flynn
Alcock
McEveley
Cuvelier

I do not think it matters what we spend it will not be enough to get out of this league, our squad depth is already full to the rafters, and who wants our rejects? not many clubs I suspect. We all have to be realistic we drew with Walsall, for gods sake how low is that, oh yes I forgot we lost at Crewe bottom of the table had not scored a goal for ever.
Why are we buying plays like Hammond, and selling Murphy, Blackman, McGuire, Quinn and Lowton, we are a selling club, next to leave will be Che Adams he has just signed a new contract and no doubt that will have a release clause attached. Even Billy Sharp who cost 1.8M is not really working out only 7 goals so far.

The good news is we are only 4 points off play offs we will know a lot more of what's in store for us after the Peterborough game I'm still hopeful we can come good at some stage and have a good run. starting with a win against Shrewsbury on Tuesday night. its always better for me and my son if we win as we have a round trip of 300 miles every home game and we have not had much to cheer about this season on our travels

the team has no balls. personally i'd get rid of ten of them and give the kids a chance. what have we got to lose? They are too young .. blah blah.. current average age of tottenham team is?? what are we waiting for?.. some of these kids are tearing it up on a weekly basis. but ooh they aren't good enough for the Sheffield united first team.. we'll send them on loan to one of our rivals?? wtf.

There's no point in spunking away a load of money again in January like we did last season. It didn't help last season and I doubt it will do now. We are too far behind the leaders and we have too many average players still here who we can't just get rid of. The time to spend is in the summer transfer window, which we didn't do, again.

Still, the way the club is being run at the moment I've little doubt that they will throw a load of money at in January, but saving a miraculous turn of events, and some of the very poor players we already have suddenly deciding they are either actually quite good, or deciding they can actually be arsed, we will not mount a promotion challenge.

Oh for some strong leadership.

look daft in 3 weeks when we beat them
I was being sarcastic, I know football isn't as easy as that.

It is possible that we could beat Coventry and them still being top by that time so I might not look as daft as you think, I do brace myself though and it is very easy to come to terms with it as I am as daft as a brush anyway, plus some posters on here help me to get through those daft times with some of the hilarious comments they come out with, keep it up mate :D

my saying we,d beat Coventry comes with a hint of irony

We probably require:

GK
CB
CM
LM
ST

If we got those 5 in, we could afford to move on:-

Howard
McEveley
McFadzean
Alcock
Cuvelier
Woolford
J. Wallace
McNulty
Higdon

I'd keep the likes of Coutts, Flynn and Scougall as back up options for the remainder of the season with a view to moving them on in the summer regardless of what league we're in.
