The question used to be which *five* football league teams have an x in their name? The question is now which *two* football league teams have an x in their name? A hex?

Dario Gradi was manager for 24 years, at the time the longest serving manager ever in the league.

They were famous for their youth development weren't they? A list of players who came up through the system would be interesting reading. David Platt was one. Rob Jones another.

Danny Murphy
Seth Johnson
Dean Ashton
Robbie Savage
Rob Hulse
Shaun Miller (Who we NEVER should've let go)
Nicky Maynard
Ben Marshall
Mike Newell
Dele Adebola

And er....(cough) (cough)..... Michael Higdon

Don't know why this always sticks in my mind but Tonge scored his first ever goal for us against Crewe in October, 2001. A 1-0 win at Bramall Lane.

According to the Guinness Book of Soccer (!) from about 1980 : In 1959-60 Crewe drew 2-2 with Spurs at Gresty Road in a 4th Round FA Cup tie, only to lose the replay 13-2 at White Hart Lane. After the game, the Crewe team departed from platform 13 at Euston Station, arriving at Crewe on platform 2.

I think Rob Jones signed for Liverpool and was immediately loaned back to Crewe. There was a lot of stuff in the Echo around that time about the signing of a brilliant full back. At around that time I think that Mitch Ward had gone on loan to Crewe from the Blades. A few of us travelled (me, a Cornish supporter of a team from near Barnsley and a Villa fan) to Crewe from Liverpool to see them play Bradford City. Can't remember if that was just before Jones signed for Liverpool but it was a poor game (Oct or Nov 1990).

Was it Ben Doane that scored an absolute worldie at Crewe from right back? I'd imagine (but don't know) that was his only goal for the Blades.

Did Ben Doane get into the first team? I remember in my first season as a season ticket holder there was always something in the match day programme about our 'hot young prospects' Ben Doane and Colin Cryan, but I can't recall seeing them in action. Then again I was only about 14 at the time.

According to Wiki he played 23 times for us and scored 1 goal (assuming this was the one at Crewe).

It says he got badly injured and had to retire after Wimbledon in 2003 (that Monday night before the Arsenal semi). I always remember we played Palace on the Saturday at Selhurst Park, then were back at the same stadium again 2 days later to play Wimbledon. (We lost 1-0 and I think Patrick Agyemang scored their goal) I was only 12 but remember it being the coldest game i've ever been too, I spent half the game watching on the concourse TV queueing for hot chocolate.

I always thought it was Marcel Cas who got injured though that night not Doane..

I don't ever recall seeing Colin Cryan play either, but Wiki says he played 5 times for us. He went on to have a decent non league career and retired in 2011.

Doane lives next to a mate of mine. Top fella by all accounts - still loves his football though his ankle is a mess. Think he's in the building trade these days.

To be fair TD, your eyes are normally fully developed by the time you're 14, so doubt it was anything to do with that Mate.

My coldest game was v Crewe - 0-0 in snow at BL in the promotion season. Closely followed by ice skating to Pride Park in 2004 for a 2-0 defeat?

Yes, they were both very cold too.

I had to walk home from school before the Derby game because the buses had stopped (it was about 7 miles) and wasn't rushing assuming the game would be off. Got a phonetical from my dad giving me a bollocking and saying get a move on as it was on!

I may be wrong but I think that Derby game had already been re arranged due to bad weather. It was the coldest I have been at a game. Pretty sure it was when Paddy tried to take on Izale Mcloud and failed miserably. We were awful that night.

Yes was there that day, was a cracking goal - drew 2 - 2.

Other trips to Gresty Road have been mixed, saw us lose 2 - 0 at the end of season when we were clinging onto a play off spot. Graham Stuart missed an awful penno.

Saw us win 3 - 1 in our promotion season. Was early on but the ease in which we won away to a 'lesser' side made me think we had a chance that season.

Also saw us win a midweek game with that rarest of things, a Monty goal. May be time and drink glamourising the memory but I am sure it was a header from outside the box?

Oh and the little chippy outside is THE highlight of any trip to Crewe.

Yes it was, the original was the Sat before Christmas. It was easily far worse conditions that night than the original game!

That's what I thought Rodders I remember getting as far as Alfreton on the day of the original game before turning back in crisp but blazing sunshine. Bizzare.

Now I live down here I get that Pride Park is quite high and open so gets the brunt of the weather. I worked next to it for about 5 years and it's like a cold wind tunnel - up there with Boundary Park and the Britannia for coldest ground in the country. At least PP isnt open so you get shelter inside.

Think former Blade John Pemberton started at Crewe.

My main memory of Crewe was the Fourth Division Championship season, near the end of the season, Blades had all the home ends and Crewe had the away end. In those days that was side terrace (where the away stand is now), main stand (where the big stand is now) and the uncovered end (the stand to the left of the away end). This was in May and driving over the Peak District we got snow, once in the ground many Blades fans used the pitch to get from one side of the ground to the other. Seem to recall about 5 to 3 there was a loud speaker announcement for United fans to stop taking the piss as the teams would be out in a minute.

Can't remember the order of the goals, think Edwards got our first and King the second. 2-1 up with 5 to play, my Dad wanted to leave earlier to beat the traffic. On the way out, just under the stand a slight roar, 2-2, just got to the car a massive roar, Jeff King winner, 3-2. Dad's car gridlocked in a packed car park. Missed all the late drama and no television replays in those days... gutted.

That was my first ever solo away game and only ever trip on a football special. Memories were a right crush going up the stairs at Crewe station and actually being lifted off the floor by the momentum, the three sides of Blades in the ground as Handsworth says and overhearing the conversation of the Bladesman across the aisle on the train who had had a right result the night before. Hearing of his conquest and some of the intricacies of things and 'acts' that had yet to come to me, put me right off the Scotch egg that my mum had packed up for me. Nowadays, those same things are what makes Christmas and birthdays worth having!

Another stage of growing up alongside the Blades.

Savage was Man U. Around the same time as Giggs etc but got released when he was either sixteen or eighteen. Crewe then picked him up.

He was in their youth cup winning team I think. The one with Scholes, Nevilles, Beckham, Butt, Gillespie etc
