Worst of the new grounds would be Chesterfield for me ,Sunderland probably best. That Ive visited.

Agree with SOL, should be the template for new stads.

Worst for me is Coventry. What a soulless place that is, and a huge downgrade on Highfield Road to boot (at least Chezzie is an improvement on Saltergate as that was past redemption by the time they departed).
I much prefer the likes of Old Trafford and Newcastle as "developments in place" rather than total new grounds to be honest. Villa Park and Goodison probably my favourite away grounds now.

Talking about decent new grounds vs. the usual featureless boxes, I always thought Rushden & Diamonds' new build was a bit of a beauty (although, no doubt, part of their financial overextension which pushed them into bankruptcy & oblivion). It just "worked" somehow.

Last I heard, it was just standing empty & fallow! - an incredible waste.

Agree about Rusdhen. Went there when we played them in the FA cup replay. Lovely little ground. I saw Marcus Bent in the barbers the next day getting his hair cut and he was bragging about scoring the winning penalty in the shoot-out to the bloke cutting his hair. He neglected to mention that he'd been absolutely crap that night.

Lol. Marcus was some player for us though, more generally (first time round). Just rechecked his scoring rate: 20 in 48 - I'd imagine only He Who Shall Not Be Named will have matched that since.

Billy Sharp's early-career time on loan at Rushden was pretty prolific too: 9 in 16. Still resent Neil not giving him anything like enough of a chance early doors in his career & still think he should never have been sold to Scunny. But, hey ho...

Agree, why give chances to a striker who probably wouldn't be good enough for the PL when you expect to be in the PL next season?
Billy was offered a new contract on the basis he'd go back out on loan to Scunny but he opted to go to Scunny permanently.

My mate played about 100 times for Rushden in about 2000 towards the later end of his career ,despite playing for Newcastle ,Blackpool ,Peterboro and York ,he always said Rushden under Brian Talbot was probably the most enjoyable time of his career.

I played in the Sheffield League, before it disintegrated. I started off at Granville Castle where my mate (eventually to be my best man) played and at the end played a few seasons for Telecom, after Granville folded. Regularly used to go to the league end of season presentation evenings at Bramall Lane. Once I got married, I packed in the trips over Woodhead and stayed closer to home and played Cheshire League for Marple.

I hope we do have a good day out. I'm looking forward to a couple in the Tap on the station and a few other pubs in the area.

I'm fortunately relatively accentless, having neither picked up pure Worcester or Manc. I never really thought there was a worcester accent until I moved away, then I realised that its a hellish mix of yokel / brummie. Manc would almost be preferable!

Yes the lane would have gone by last year - a housing estate now. I can't bring myself to drive by it when I visit the City.

Excellent blog, what a waste of a proper non-league ground, although for some reason can't take to your colours! When I go non-leaguing like to do a lap of the ground, nice to see the photographer in the blog has the same idea.

Was St George's Lane near to the city centre or cricket ground?
