10 years ago 2005/ 06 weren't we getting promoted to the premier league on 90 points . :D

Isn't that the crux of it though? Football's progressed a bit quicker than us?

I was going to ask, a little rhetorically, why when there are big name clubs in L1 we say it's a strong league, in fact many seem to judge the strength of the league by the number of 'big clubs' in it. Having seem most of them playing us, I don't think they were any better than some of the better teams over the last season or so. I think the general standard of football in every league has improved (technically, not necessarily in terms of entertainment) over the last few years.

Paulus's post puts some meat on the bones of my theorising.

We were patchy last season and have continued to be this season some great win's interspersed with bad losses ,lacklustre draws and scrappy three pointers

In short we are inconsistent ,in my opinion because the players dont consistently try hard enough

If we go on a run of wins that shows we are out of this pattern then by all means start a thread designed to wind anyone up who was unhappy with a draw against ten man oldham THE GAME BEFORE but until then there isnt really anything to get clever about

If you refuse to read Bergen's analysis there's not much I can do about that. However it is by a country mile the best and clearest explanation of what actually went wrong.

It's pretty clear and to be expected that we are still experimenting, though gradually as manager and players familiarise themselves with each other, their roles will become clearer and they will be able to play at a higher level for a longer period including hopefully one day from the first whistle.

I've said this a number of times now and, for me, it seems obvious and true, nevertheless it doesn't seem to be gaining any traction in this thread so I'll leave it at that.

Fwiw the point about lack of effort was not aimed in your direction it was a thread after the game.

Also since it seems to be an issue I've been to every League game apart from Burton. Though I don't see it as at all relevant: it doesn't make my views on this any more or less valid - Bergen's not even in the country and he knows more about the games than anyone apart from Positive Nigel.

WHF, you're chasing 'likes' again.

Thanks for the heads up anyhow's, I'll have to look up this Bergen Blade and Positive Nigel. Sounds like they should be running the club!

There could be some truth in that. Particularly when there's a change of manager. I don't think players, in general, deliberately go out with the intention of not trying, more that they can't find that extra little push to get their game going.

NA has said himself that some of the players might not respond to his style and methods and perhaps some aren't quite convinced yet and haven't got that belief that can give you an extra yard.

A lot of our players were 'Cloughie's boys', signed by N1, often having played for him before. N2 has had to tread on eggshells since coming in, hence necessity to give everyone a clean slate. He's had to win them over when they could have quickly closed ranks and turned against him. I imagine there's a few who were pretty pissed off when Clough was sacked.

These dynamics are the things we don't get to see but can have a big impact on the bit we do see.

wasnt about last night it was about its getting better
player coming in, clean sheet , 3 goal win players returning from injury
things are looking up
It was about you jumping on the first person who looked at facts in a different way to you almost as if you had laid a trap for it. "Let's bash anyone who was remotely critical of last night"
Don't want to argue but let's cut the bull eh?
It's gone now. Roll on Saturday

I've quickly learnt on here that people know exactly what they're talking about if they agree with your own view and are clueless morons if they don't.

Isnt that the same in life in general?

I dont mind any constructive criticism , but theres a set pattern of ctiique in here
lose we were gargabe draw at oldham we are still garbage
win 3-0 we are only slightly garbage , but only won because the opposition was dreadful

theres a hatred from some to give even the slightest bit of credit
lets not cut the bull theres some that thrive on us faIling
if anyone puts a positive spin on anything they pounce with vigour and bring up past defeats off the cuff , lists of past failures they are unprepared to let go of

Perhaps its a big ask expecting the odd smile after a 3-0 win
Some people in here are the sort that if they won a third share of 120 million on the lottery theyd not enjoy the 40 million as theyd spend the rest of their life moaning about the 80 million the other 2 got

Reminds me of when we were "lucky" to up to the Prem last time.

So, two posts after having a go at people who always look back............

Yes you do, you start blithering on about "expecting to win 5-0 every match"
only to the odd ones who think if we dont beat teams like fleetwood and southend by cricket scores weve under achieved
which is ridiculous

have you never spotted any criticism that maybe a tad negative , just for being negatives sake
if not I could show you 2 or 3000 examples

Nice looking table but I'm not sure what it tells us? Many of these teams are operating at a different level so your not really comparing like with like.

Just to put things into some sort of context then for us the last 30 years equates to: tier 1 = 5 seasons; tier 2 = 19 seasons; tier 3 = 6 seasons.

Since 1964 we've had 14 seasons in the top tier, 26 seasons in the Championship / Old Lge 1, 10 seasons in the 3rd tier and 1 season in the bottom.

its across all leagues
we spent most of it in the championship so it shows we did well in that
which ever league you were in you were playing your peers

Genuine question here, and it's not a 'bigger blade' thing.

Do you attend our matches?
not since emigrating to Spain 14 months ago, saw last boxing day draw and will be home for the Coventry game
seen a lot of games on internert
went 21 years once not missing a home or away game, until a wedding got in the way
only seen us on about 3000 occasions to be fair

I'm not questioning your loyalties or anything like that, it's just I tend to find that it's a lot easier to find the positives of just looking at the results and be more positive if you're not witnessing how we're actually playing.

Tuesday for example, great result, clean sheet, 3 goals, but the scoreline doesn't tell the whole story.

the whole story is we won 3-0
out of those several thousand Ive watched dont you think there were periods in games we won were we werent sparkling
its my experience of 50 years of suffering watching us even the years we went up there were loads of games that were at best dross
its par for the course
if your waiting for us playing expansive, entertaining football from start to finish , Im sorry but your going to be sorely disappointed
9 promotions Ive seen and there were about 8 to 10 really entertaining games in any one of those seasons

most were ugly wins , games clinging on and late late wins against the run of play

why expect us to steam roller teams when to my knowledge its never happened

saying we are poor , well its a fact generally we are so YOU BULL UP THE MEDIOCRE BITS AND REMEMBER ONLY THE GOOD BITS FROM PROMOTION SEASONS TO MAKE US SOUND GOOD
forget the 5-0 thumpings at west ham and 4-0 at Leeds , never happened

best run of games I can ever remember we only won 6 that was out return to league 1 , top league then when we were top going to man utd
even then we won 1-0 at Leicester with a woodward goal straight from a corner that game was dreadful

2 defeats in 9 but we are leaking goals like water on the titanic.

Certain players need to be offloaded ASAP.
